Wave damping by seagrass - High wave velocity
The video show how the model seagrass meadow move in response to waves. We conducted experiments with different wave velocities. The wave conditions we used in the lab overlapped with a wide range of field conditions with wind waves.
The meadow of model seagrass was constructed with individual plants consisting of six LDPE (low-density polyethylene) blades and a cylindrical wooden stem. The wooden stem (grey part) mimiched the sheath of real seagrass. Two plants were colored black for better visualization.
When there are no waves, the plants are stationary so that the blades are upright. However, when the wave exists, the blades will move in response to the flow.

If you're watching this, chances are that you are studying hydraulics... so hydraulic jump happens when the flow changes from supercritical state to a subcritical state, and this oscillating jump is very undesirable when designing a hydrostructure because it is uncontrollable, the Fr (Froude number) of this is between 2.5 and 4.5!

Nice demonstration that flow can go round in circles and still be irrotational. In an asymptotically subsonic fluid, sound waves travel at very high speed to get the fluid moving. However rotation or vorticity only travels at much slower speeds by convection or diffusion. Initially vorticity is only present at boundaries.

Absolute bullshit. Kelvin's Circulation theory: DΓ/Dt=0 relates to conservative flow fields : no net change in energy, no work done. Fluid flow around a body causes energy losses due to friction and turbulence. Kelvin is turning in his grave!

Regarding the hanging cylinder, This is known as Lift Galloping. There is negative aerodynamic damping being added to the system (mass-spring equation of the hanged cylinder), which means that the flow gives (transfers) energy to the cylinder instead of damping as commonly known in a viscous fluid. The negative damping comes due to vortices is shed alternately at the downstream generating a harmonic force with a frequency that eventually will coincide with the natural frequency of the cylinder as the speed of the flow increases. Also, in the solution for the equation of the motion will appear a term of (e^positve number) which means exponential growth of the amplitude of the motion of the cylinder.

i swear these old engineering videos are so much better than what's put out these days. I think it's the fact that the newer stuff just assumes that the audience can't follow the technical details so they just gloss over it. Personally, i'd rather not be coddled.
