Potty training before 2: How we potty trained our daughter by 23 months
Potty training before 2 is possible. We potty trained our daughter before age 2 and now we don't have to worry about accidents.
While most parents begin the potty training process around 18 to 24 months, we began when our child was a newborn. We began by communicating the process, allowing her to see the process, and ultimately helping her become aware of her body.
So if you're thinking about toilet training your little one soon, or you've already started the process, I share the things you need to know that will make it much easier and much faster.
If you know how to tell when your child is ready, and then follow some simple steps you can take the stress out of potty training and make it a much more enjoyable experience.

As a parent myself, I recognize that tantrums can take a toll on you, causing stress and frustration, and leaving you feeling exhausted and unsure of how to respond effectively...

    I love this video explaining everything! I'm currently pregnant with my first baby and trying to decide what would be best and safe for my baby, I think in the beginning we're going to do a bassinet in our room and then slowly transition him into his own room. I just want to know what your advice is for first-time moms thinking about getting a floor bed with or without some kind of barriers for it? I just don't know if I want to do a straight-up mattress on the floor or a crib that could be transitioned into a floor bed, as you can see I don't know how to go about this. Thank you so much for the video and advice! :)

      Congratulations on this special time in your journey! :) I will start by saying to always follow your intuition and do what feels right for you. The beauty of having a prepared environment is that you can choose how to set up the floor bed and what floor bed to get. If you live in a humid place, where it gets cold in the winter, wooden hard floors, etc maybe opt in for a slightly raised bed. A low crib that transforms into a bed is also a great idea! :) The goal here is that you give your child freedom of movement and ability to have independence when it comes to sleeping. Raised bed or mattress on the floor will give your child the same benefits. The benefits are for the long run! :) We are 2.5 years into our floor bed journey and WOW it has payed off, our daughter is able to put her self to sleep and feels in control of HER sleep, it's empowering to her and it's by far the best thing we have done to help her sleep with ease.latinxmontessori.com/best-montessori-floor-bed-options/ Here is a link to a blog post with a few options. Thank you so much for being here! Wishing you the best.

    I found it much more beneficial and easier to put baby right on the toilet. I did put a little seat on it so she doesn't fall in lol but the potty in the living room or other places felt like it's sending the wrong message. I just successfully potty trained my 3rd child she's currently just turned 18m. I introduced the potty around 11m and agree with you to take them with you when you go and tell them what you're doing. I occasionally put her on the potty and sometimes she'd go and sometimes she wouldn't. There was no pressure. She eventually started showing more interest and asking to go around 16m. I decided to give panties a try for the weekend and she picked it up so fast. Yes, many accidents but with high encouragement and high praise for success, we had less accidents. Now at 18m she's basically fully potty trained with very few accidents. It does take a lot of work but it's so worth it once they get the hang of it.

    I don't know..... when in underwear, they may mess the car, a friend's house, or in oublic places. My baby was potty trained about age 2 because i patiently sat him on a baby potty by patterns i had observed, then rewarded him with small pieces of chocolate when he deposited anything. But i kept him in pullups until i was sure. After all, we went to church twice a week.

    • @latinxmontessori
      @latinxmontessori Před 2 měsíci

      They don't have to wear underwear everywhere they go at first, start at home and then slowly keep them in undies at the park or places you go. Glad your process worked.

    I have been literally researching this info this whole week. However most videos skip the beginning phases of potty training. Thanks for providing the info from the early stages. I'm late to the game, and we're around the corner from 2yo and are now trying to figure this process out. Any suggestions on how to help our boy start now?

    • @latinxmontessori
      @latinxmontessori Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks for your comment. The earlier you start the sooner they will learn. You can still practice some of the tactics I describe in the video. If your child is wearing diapers, slowly transition to underwear. What worked for many parents is keeping them in underwear during the weekend (if your child goes to school/daycare). The goal is for your boy to become aware of the feeling, discomfort if he soils his diaper, and act of pooping in his potty. This is going to be a challenging part but the best path to take.

    I wouldnt say this is open-ended but rather multi-purpose which is not exactly montessori like toy as it needs to serve one clear purpose etc. Open ended toys are like blocks which does not have any intended purpose but can be used creatively. Altough I personally still struggle how to get my child to play with them, they might be too young yet :D

Your videos have been extremely helpful on this journey, thank you so much! 🫶🏼 I wanted to ask, is starting out with a twin mattress any different than a crib mattress? Also would you have any tips for a parent who is room sharing with their little one?

We have the Newton Twin Mattress (shrsl.com/438mb) which I highly recommend. As for the tip, we co-slept with our daughter for the first 4 months and it was a good experience. Then we transitioned to the floor bed starting with naps so she would get used to her new environment.

    This is sadly SO TRUE! My mom always did everything for us. And when she asked us to do anything and we didn’t, she would just do it herself. I remember very clearly I asked her to teach me how to do laundry and she ask ‘why do you want to learn to do laundry?!” And didn’t teach me… I was 17!! I am working so hard to have my kids not go through the same struggles I did (and still do at 36) and it has been hard but it has been so wonderful watching my kids being so independent. My heart can’t handle it ❤

      Hello! Thank you so much for being here. At first we simply introduced her to the floor bed. I would lay with her (safely with no pillows or blankets) with her or a few minutes, the we transitioned into naps only and eventually overnight. It was a process but incredibly worth it. Now that she is 2.5 years old, bed time is easy and not many power struggles. I will soon make a video on our experience. With all honesty, there were moments that I wasn't sure if a floor bed was the best option but trusting the process was worth it. Wishing you the best mama, you've got this! :)

    We sent our academically gifted ADHD son to a Montessori preschool for a while hoping they could find a way for him to learn at his own pace while staying with kids his own age and it was a disaster. Self-directing within bounds is not a strong suit of ADHD kids and he caused so much grief to the teachers there, they basically asked us to leave after 6 months. Teh main thing he learned was the only way to get attention was to misbehave and that many punishment were to send him to the office (where he played chess with the school secretary) or send him to mark time in the 3rd grade class (which he loved because that was about his academic level). We used to draw straw for who would have to go in to pick him up each day to listen to the litany of all the things he had done wrong that day. He was there for months and they never realized he could read and do multiplication at age 4. This was a long establish preschool through year 8 Montessori school, so you think they would know how to do it right. My conclusion was Montessori may work for some (I expect our second, not ADHD, kid would have thrived there) but it does not work for all.

      I am so sorry you had this experience and I'm sorry your child had to go through this. Sadly, any school can use the term "Montessori" as it is not trademarked. It's insane that they didn't take the time to follow his lead and to notice how talented your kid is, doing advanced academic work at such a young age...such potential! The Montessori principles truly are for all. Principles or respect and honoring a child's WHOLE self. As a parent I have learned, and as I shared in this video, incorporating Montessori at home is possible and anyone can do it. I appreciate your vulnerability in sharing this, thank you for being here.

    Montessori works because almost any philosophy applies somewhat to raising kids. But the truth is if you’re bad at parenting or scared to parent or whatever and are grabbing onto anything to try to raise your kid, eventually, since you’re gonna be around for at least 18 years (hopefully) they’re going to have to deal with the real you, whatever that is, eventually. Montessori is to a huge extent way too structured for home life. Okay. Home life is for love and family. Montessori is for school and for learning. It’s to introduce kids to deliberate actions and one right way of doing things and types of equipment (that are not toys) that are meant to be manipulated in fairly exact ways. These things are all not what you want in a family. Even hardcore Montessorians concede that art and free play (recess) should basically be unstructured time for kids to be kids. And that’s what kids should be able to be at home. The exceptions are small: Montessori has some equipment for helping with chores (brooms and mops and buckets and cutters for the kitchen that work but won’t cut hands) that are actually really nice.

      thanks for your comment. And yes, you don't have to follow the philosophy letter by letter at home. You can be flexible and us what works for your family.
