You are completely wrong. Black is not a Colonial term. Black Africans have been calling themselves black for a very long time. Ancient Kemet, land of the black people. Sumerian called themselves black headed people. Black is divinity, Africans Americans knows this, its most Africans have forgotten their history. It seems most Africans are still worshipping white people. Africans Americans are the freest black people on the planet. Why should you call yourself a name your oppressors called you? Please go learn your ancient history.

Interesting conversation. None of the terms now used have any relationship to their original meaning. Even the name Africa is not the original name of the continent. That name was given by the Greeks. As an American I would say this. From the 50’s through the 80’s, we experienced a revolution in our consciousness that motivated us to call ourselves Black. Before that we were divided into categories. Such as colored, mulato, negro. This after the one drop rule that designated anyone with even a drop of black blood as less than a white person. However, levels of privilege and access were provided to those with lighter skin. And lighter skin people developed the same mentality as whites and looked down on their darker skinned brothers and sisters. The darker skinned were consigned to ghettos while the lighter skinned had access to good education and a higher standard of living. When the black revolution and civil rights movement began to manifest in our culture it was decided that all of us, no matter how light skinned would identify as black because the darkest of us were the most vulnerable to discrimination and racial violence. It was a way to counter the system of divide and conquer. As a result of this choice we were able to fight for our rights as one people. Perhaps wrongly, but it is that we came to look upon the term colored as one who was trying to maintain their proximity to white privilege, and thus someone who was likely to sell the rest of us out. It worked but… We still have sell outs in the US, Especially in the political sphere. I remember being shocked the first time I met a South African that identified herself as colored. She was talking about a “Coon Festival” that featured black musicians and artists. This a second shock as the word “coon” was a word used by whites to insult black people in America. However, I agree with you. We have to show more compassion and understanding of each other’s experience within these colonial systems, and not allow these words to divide us. Kathryn
