Both US and China, and to a larger extent, the rest of the world must face a new world order that's in the making ... 1) China has now become the largest industrial and manufacturing center in the world with perhaps the most cost efficient operations and logistics systems including shipping and customer services; 2) US is practicing destructive and protective trade policies to contain China's competitive advantage in the manufacturing sector, attempting to restrict or impose barriers to China's export capabilities and volumes; 3) The western population and productivity is on decline, so is China's at a lagging pace, increasing their reliance not only on imported household products but also new immigrants from labor, intellectual to capital intensive workforce; 4) BRICS and One belt and one road are building momentum, leading to challenges of US-dominated financial system and functioning on a global level; 5) China is in-between being the beneficiary of the US-dominated world system in the past and being the beneficiary of its own system or orientation, domestic and global, in development as mentioned in 4). 6) AI, Crypto, eco- and bio-tech developments and innovations add to the complexities of the new world order. In conclusion it's going to be chaotic for a while since major western countries led by the US are reluctant to work with the emerging China, while the later is going its own way to create a different system that's going to shift away from the current US-dominated financial, trade and foreign policy system. The mutual interest between US and China in the past has now become conflicts and threats to each other. It's naive to think leadership change in either hemisphere can alter the trend ...

You asked the rational behind the investment driven, export driven economy even when every indicator points that this not the solution. But they still do it. Why? I believe it is ideological. Xi is ideologically attached to a model of creating a middle kingdom with vast number of tributary states. To create this model, China has to create dependency where countries look to China for things they need. You can only create that with an export driven model. BRI is also part of this ideology. I strongly believe in this.

China is a great country but with two big problems: 1) the business practice of racing to the bottom, which is 内卷 in Chinese and overproduction in foreigners’ lingo; 2) tone-deafness to and insularity from the the rest of the world culturally and psychologically despite all the McDonald’s and Audis. The current government policies are a testament to all of the above.

I love professor Sachs so much, i wish he was the US's president but unfortunately there's something he doesn't seem to understand, he doesn't link capitalism with imperialism, imperialism is necessary for capitalism, as long as the US and Europe are capitalists, no other nation can rise unchallenged, capitalism requires an underclass to work, wether it's internal inside the US or globally, capitalism inheritantly tends to concentrate money and power at the top 10%, how can u be an economy professor and not know that? Have u ever read marx or lenin? the only reason the US can be rich is by extracting capital from the rich class of other nations using their treasury bonds because the dollar is the global currency which ensures a capital drain from these developing countries that stops their development and all the military bases in other countries are there to ensure that remains the case, by also destabilizing other countries u get migration which ensures braindrain from these war torn countries into the US and Europe, it's a mafia, they bully countries into compliance, that's the only way capitalism can work or be sustained, if other countries somehow started to get rich, then there's no one to exploit for the G7 countries ruling classes, they won't be able to make so much money, the only reason china was able to progress thus far is because the government kept a tight control over the economy and was allowed by the US to do so coz the Chinese government used US companies greed against them, the Chinese understand capitalism very well and bet on US companies to flee the US labor market in order to avoid paying americans living wages and preferred cheap chinese labor, the bet was on the money, they used the system against itself, in capitalism all that matters is short term profit, the US doesn't have a real democracy, it's only one ruling class, the republicans are the main party and the democrats is the controlled opposition, the only way to start changing the system is by pressuring our representatives to introduce ranked choice voting instead of winner takes all, but they will never do that coz it threatens their power, the only hope or way to end imperialism, mentain peace and save the planet is for the US to transform to socialism, good luck with that, we're all doomed, liberals will choose to side with fascism over socialism like they did everytime throughout history, cut a liberal and a fascist bleed

China's one child policy of 40 years ago has led to the most spectacular decline in working population numbers, this means fewer consumers to push cash around the economy. A housing bubble that affects huge numbers of the population just burst, as did the stock market and foreign investment into China. Xi is not told the truth by fearful subordinates which clouds his decision making ability. China will undergo a complete political/social/economic overhaul before 2030. This will be inflationary for the whole world, and also lead to high growth for the USA as domestic producers pick up the shortfall in Chinese imports. The challenges of immigration will soar for the USA as no other country has a viable reserve currency other than the US dollar. Because of which, the Fed Bank can create much more money than any other country.

I'm so tired of mere diagnosis in terms of Chinese economics. What we need is a focus on strategies to restore and improve the situation. I think Xi should try to secure a financial sector bailout from the Fed in exchange for FP concessions in the S. China Sea and Taiwan Straight, and directly approach both parties in Washington to see if foreign policy giveaways can buy better trade relations. The Politburo should issue an investors' bill of rights, should institute income taxes on upper incomes and property taxes, esp. on commercial property. in order to break the speculation-to-provincial-govt-revenue link. The PRC should adopt its own FDIC, which could prevent the horrible effects of many depositors not being able to withdraw their money amid the collapse. The PRC should also strictly enforce order of liquidation procedures and solvency/insurance requirements to make sure that workers are always paid, since their spending is vital to demand. The PRC finally should do everything it can to promote internal demand, whether through extended unemployment benefits, entry level salary support, education stipends, etc.

A number of years ago, I think just before or after the Trump presidency began in 2017, I remember a Chinese official.pointing out that both the Chinese & US economies had grown significantly as a result of mutual.open trade, since China's WTO admission (supported by the US). This official said the Chinese economy had grown by USD13 Trillion & the US economy by USD11 Trillion. BUT, he added, China has had no control over how that additional US wealth was distributed within the US itself. In other words, China is not responsible for the grotesque & unsustainable (& growing) level of economic inequality within the US!

You need to understand but one thing and one thing alone. No society in the History of the Human Race predicated on the Industrial Military Complex has EVER survived. Now, tell me what part of that statement don't you understand. Ergo, America and China are opposites sides of the same coin and therefore both are doomed to both societal and economic collapse along with all the other clowns taking sides in this impending conflict. To believe or think anything else makes you little more than a village idiot. As for all these computer bots which are drowning out the people say just how wonderful you are, the same bots are saying the same thing to those who say the exact opposite.
