      I thought if you make the knob hollow then attach it to the lid, you are actually creating an air bubble. This is the only part I do not agree with. It doesn't seem to make sense

    • @jordanb7577
      @jordanb7577 Před 6 měsíci

      @@marynixon687 If it's more than half an inch thick, then making the knob hollow is crucial in order for the project to not explode in the kiln. What she didn't mention is that you should put a hole in the slab that the knob is attaching to, which eliminates the air bubble that a hollow knob would've created. Hope this helps!

      Clay has a sort of “muscle memory”. So, if you have bent it while handling it, it can warp. An uneven thickness or rapid drying can also cause warping.

    It's important that when sweeping the tables not to sweep with an upwards motion. Sweeping like this allows the clay dust to fly into the air and potentially getting into your lungs, causing serious health problems.

    Some important reminders/tips in this video are the way she uses specific fingers to open up the center and her the hand placement in flattening the top of the clay.

  • @angeladomingo477
    @angeladomingo477 Před 8 lety

    Using evenly rolled coils, as seen in this video, is important to making the walls of the coil pot even and easier to blend together.

    Patience is important in ceramics because it shows how hard you actually worked. If we didn't have patience, we wouldn't be able to see our effort and personal commitment through our works.

    Taking a damp sponge to remove any excess clay crumbs helps to avoid sharp, dry bumps that can cut you.

    When it was time to smooth out the outside of the coil pot, she used a spoon. For the final retouch, she used her fingers to make sure it was all coming together into place. Something that stood out was that in the end of the video she spun here soil pot. This reminds me that if we try hard we should be proud of what we make.

    A great emphasis was made on where the hands should be placed. What I liked about this video is that many suggestions were made throughout, giving the viewer an idea on how to do it. This was very helpful because I have never done it. One last important thing that I noticed was that it took time to make. Therefore, making a cylinder requires time, patience, and an eye for the little details.

    An important reminder is too always keep the sink clean because everyone washes their hands and it can be easy to get the sink clogged with clay. Like the video mentioned, "Clean Sink = Happy Mrs. Averil"

    An important step is to make sure the sticks are the same size when rolling out the slabs because if not the slabs will be uneven and the box will be lopsided

    One important thing is to know what type of glaze you're using in order to know how much you have to wipe off the foot or if there is any special technique to use for that specific glaze

    i think her showing how dirty the wheel can get is important. there was dirty water everywhere and it is important to clean that and everything else you used. i also think showing how it should look is just as important.

    A really helpful thing was the mention at the beginning of the video to actually remember that you need to MIX the glaze. If not mixed it will not coat the piece properly. It was also helpful that how much glaze to wipe off on the bottom is mentioned because it reminded me that some glazes do run.

    I like the commentary in this video because as it is playing you can see what the speak is describing as they do it. It is also really helpful that they displayed all the tools necessary to make the goal because it is a good reminder of what each tool is actually used for. Although it wasn't actually mentioned I liked the fact that a popsicle stick was used to weld a great part of the piece. I myself usually use my fingers and I never really like the way my coil pots come out, so I might try it with a popsicle stick this time around.

    Considering I haven't attempted to throw my own cylinder yet I found a lot of the tips in this video very helpful. The written comments also played a great part in explaining. The tip I liked the most was using a pin tool to measure the thickness of the bottom because I know personally my bottoms are usually either too thin or too thick.

  • @Samma124

    One important tip was to make sure that when dipping a piece into glaze, not to dip it in for too long or else it will stick to the pot wrongly. I also like how the video mentioned that glaze in unpredictable and not to be upset if it doesn't turn out as how you expected. -Sam Rivera

  • @nataliemartinez3112

    something she mentioned that is very important is cleaning the foot. you dip your work but when you are done you need to clean the foot or you will ruin your work and the kiln. this is important so nobodys beautiful work gets ruined, and the kiln doesnt get ruined.

    Something important that stuck out to me was the score, slip, press , weld notes, and also the material set up. score slip press weld are so important in making a secure and stable anything, if you dont do it correct, your vase could crack or fall apart. this video also showed how to roll out a piece and how to properly get a base.

  • @madelinegarcia9983
    @madelinegarcia9983 Před 8 lety

    I think an important reminder for this video is to clean the tools after use and before putting them away. I remember a lot of time where I would pick up a tool and it would still have leftover clay on it, this way the tool is clean for the next person's use. -Madeline

  • @Samma124

    The tip about accidentally forming a nail mark in your slab by applying/smoothing out extra clay is extremely useful. I, being fairly clumsy, will probably use this often! Hopefully, not too often. -Sam Rivera

  • @Samma124
    @Samma124 Před 8 lety

    I like how the video says, "With experience, personal technique develops." I think that really shows how craftsmanship is not solely based on your level of patience and attention to detail, but also to the amount of time you're willing to commit in order to gain the skill to create beautiful works. -Sam Rivera

  • @Samma124
    @Samma124 Před 8 lety

    Although not mentioned, yet shown, I think this video does a great job in showing how when you weld the clay together you must weld on both the inside AND outside of the coil pot. It's a very small, but important detail that defines a ceramic artist. -Sam Rivera

  • @Samma124
    @Samma124 Před 8 lety

    One important tip I thought was important was how you have to position your arms a certain way. Posture and arm positioning are extremely important in order to stay comfortable and not strain yourself, or otherwise destroy your cylinder by accident. -Sam Rivera

  • @Samma124
    @Samma124 Před 8 lety

    Adding to what Sophia R. mentioned about cleaning, it also very important to clean the bags since it may have clay residue and dust. I honestly would have never thought to clean that until watching this. -Samantha Rivera
