Breaking Ground On Our Horse Barn and Greenhouse | Chapter 4
Hello! It's May, our woodstove is still burning, and we've started building our 36 x 40 horse barn and 15 x 40 greenhouse. We're using as many materials from our homestead as possible, making these old fashioned/rustic buildings. We're using trees from our own property to build these, and about 80% of the materials will come from our own homestead.
We also moved our 1,200-square-foot garden, built some rabbit nesting boxes, added a new coop door, and used some beautiful compost from our livestock on the new garden area.
The greenhouse will have insulation on the back (northern) half, a wood stove, and lamps for lighting throughout the winter. It's oriented 26 degrees, so it perfectly faces and absorbs the winter sun, while deflecting some of the heat of the summer sun.
The horse barn will have six stalls, a tack/feed room, and an indoor wash rack. If you have any advice or hacks for a new barn, I would LOVE to hear from you :)
Thank you so much!

    That's $3.7 per chicken, which is more than the cost of a whole chicken here.

    Chickens in 17-1800's were smaller and bread to be bigger and got broody and hatched more baby chicks today some breeds lay eggs but do not hatch eggs by breeding this behaviour out of them land race breeds and self sustainable as they will hatch their eggs and have chicks but take a time to molt hatch and raise young do not lay much in this time as the breeds that are bred not to be broody will lay more eggs consistently but take there eggs to put under a broody breed to hatch their egg as a variety of breeds with both behaviours is a good idea land race breeds are breeds that have developed by going feral in harsh conditions like the icelandic in extreme cold... Where they have adapted to their environment a easter egger is a common land race type breed and a mutt of colors and genetics not over inner bred which as other farm animals a hardier breed.. less trouble and care... Clean water and food and bedding compost and clean all manure as unclean environment cause illness and parasites have had poultry over 30 years and cried as a 5 year old had to bring my pet rooster to a neighbor's farm to be with other chickens ,he was one of two chicks with food coloring green and blue for Easter and was not expected to live to be a adult rooster but when he started crowing was told I had to let him live on a farm with other chickens so he could be happy so when I got older started raising my own flock and like getting fresh eggs and hatching chicks each season to replace the ones that get eaten or met a untimely end ,take 6-8 months chick hens to mature to lay eggs depending on the breed, small breeds and bantams are my favorite thow they are small and their eggs are too can fly and roost in trees...

    I'm not always sure anoxic environments are best for vegetable roots. If you have mycelium growing it indicates a lack of oxygen. As we all know hydroponic specifically aeroponics grow the biggest most productive plants. and the last thing you want to see on a seedling is fungi/mold. IMO you dont want any mycelium in soil you are trying to grow in, wait for it to break down the remaining polysaccharides lignin and cellulose before attempting to grow in it.

    No you need macro/mesoporous carbon. Terra Preta. Burn a stack bury it, spread charcoal carbon in soil. Need to pee on it or put in animal stall first or will deplete soil. Needs to be charged.

    This is a fantastic video! Chockfull of great and useful Information.. we have short summers by us, but I do notice when free ranging.. my girls go through significantly less feed. We tend to let some of our open land grow wild for the pollenators.. and the chickens love to forage in there and they love to venture in the woods to feed as well. So while it is a welcome break in our feed costs it sadly doesn't last.. thanks again keep making great videos

    Fantastic video. I'm getting into meat rabbits and doing my own forge feeding. I have half an acre in western Washington, so, tons of growth with all of the rain we get. It's really cool to know, set this half acre. In the middle of the city would be able to sustain a decent colony of rabbits. Meat at the grocery store is getting ridiculous. So a couple of family members and I decided let's do it, and I'm glad we're doing it. It's so enjoyable to raise these rabbits. And then know exactly what your food ate where it came from, etc. Thank you again for taking the time and effort to break down all this in one nice video. Good job, this is awesome! Couldn't tell that it was one of your first videos until after you said it near the end of your video here. I mean, obviously, keep going!

    I have become convinced that the improvement we see near old wood is often due to its bio activity. On my place, I can see a difference in the growth of the plants that I plant. The same species, in rows progressively shrink the farther away from the wooded center that they get. It follows the blown leaf litter pattern. Certainly there is a marginal difference in fertility. I believe the radical difference that I am seeing is more than npk. I believe I am seeing a difference in bio activity too. Living soil vs dead soil. I like to add decomposing leaf litter and a little soil from the wood lot to improved planting holes elsewhere.

    • @LupusMechanicus
      @LupusMechanicus Před dnem

      No it's because of the charcoal and carbon left from ancient forest fires. Bacteria and fungi grow in the microscopic pores trapping minerals and making them bio available.

    Girl! This is an awesome video! I love number crunching, and have reached out in the past to several farmers at our local farmers market on what I’d need to grow in order to make my own chicken feed. Can you believe that none of them grow their own feed? They brushed it off saying it was too complicated… 😣 I enjoy calculating nutritional content though, so maybe I’m just uniquely wired to think about this type of thing. But you’ve done all the hard work for me! THANK YOU!🙏🏻 I just need to do some further digging on what grains to combine for the full spectrum of amino acids, as my family has to avoid wheat and corn because of allergies, and I’m hoping to only grow grains that we can eat as well, in order to utilize what I choose to grow to the fullest potential. I’ve dreamed my whole life about what I’d have to do in various areas in order to be totally self-reliant, knowing that even if you’re growing all your own food, your animals would still be reliant on the store if you’re not likewise growing their food. Anyway, this video is the stuff of fascination for me, so thank you again! And BTW, totally off topic, but your such a pretty sister! And no, I’m not weird, haha! Married for many years, but only sons and no daughters. It’s just my motto to never withhold a compliment, even to strangers.😊 Most of us science nerds tend to be plain Janes, haha! And throughout the video I’d imagined, well… someone who looks kinda like me! 😁 Boy mom here 🙋🏻‍♀️ but now that my sons are grown I’ve been interested lately in rekindling my girly side. You’re an inspiring lady! 👩‍🌾🐓🤓🌺
