Secondary Dominants

Writing in Four Parts
zhlédnutí 84KPřed 9 lety
A very, very old approach to teaching music theory is to have students write in four vocal parts. Even though choirs aren't common today, there are important skills you can glean from this practice. The balance between instruments of a band between lead vocals, lead guitar, harmonic accompaniment (keys/guitar), bass, drums, is still 'voice leading.' Being sensitive to instrument (aka voice) int...

Diatonicism
zhlédnutí 5KPřed 9 lety
Where do scales come from, and do you really have to know them? How can you tell if something "out of key"? Sounding good is sometimes just a matter of being diatonic, or, staying in the right key. When you know your scales/modes, it's pretty hard to sound bad.
Secondary Dominants in popular music
zhlédnutí 130KPřed 9 lety
Music theory Pop music styles are usually simple harmonically, but some songwriters really know their stuff. Here are some great examples of secondary dominants (V/x) in popular tunes from Foo Fighers, Muse, Les Mis, and Norah Jones.

Thank you!!!
So interesting, thanks so much for uploading. Any idea what I could read to further my knowledge on this?
Pretty hard to discern any chords in the second example.
A note (forming the basis for a mnajor chord) which is a half tone above the dominant is an augmented firth or minor sixth from the tonic. So why this preposterous and unnecessary confusion of calling it an augmented 6th? No entiendo!!
Very very good. I think this is as good a harmony video have so far seen!
Nice video, it shows a good way to help people learn to hear and discover secondary dominants, only I think that the Muse-song “Stockholm Syndrome” has these chords : Dm | C/D | G/D | Bb/D | A/E | F | D/F# | Gm | Dm/F . About the pedal tone in the first 4 bars ; it doesn't change the feeling of the chords, nor the Roman numerals but the second part is different as far as I am concerned.
Wow, this is slightly out of my pay grade, but it sure does help for learning the keyboard.
Great content n presentation! Subbed
Maestro: Please do you have a reference PDF sheet - Wow this is teaching music. Thank you for sharing your genius with someone like me and us. Grazie Maestro
Sune, you're a genius!
Brilliantly simple even for someone like me who writes music in 4 part harmony despite never having studied the Theory of music and being unable to play piano. Thank you.
muchas gracias
Wow. Nice channel! Thanks for the lesson (s)!
wow! this is so great!! great video!
please teach us the classic harmony with love from egypt
expected a meme and didnt get it, disliked
Thanks
ITS A DOMINANT 7TH WITH A FLAT FIFTH. 3rds always resolve up. 7ths/5ths always resolve down. There. You're welcome.
I found this particular (video and) explanation of augmented sixth chords very helpful, thank you.
Hello, In 3:28 it says that the secondary diminished 7th chord is built on the leading tone of G ascending melodic minor, but such ascending scale has E natural, not E flat, and the chord does have E flat.
great observation!

What type of music might children best respond to given their musical perceptions and inclinations? Is there a particular genre of music, or particular song or set of songs? How might you get them to respond actively while engaging a high level of cognitive sophistication?
Sorry, but you have some errors in your presentation. For example parralel 8s and 5s (5:04). Correct them if you want
If 'Russian' technique was superior, everyone would be using it. Why flat fingers? I thought was considered bad technique.
Here's my version of Amazing Grace in four part harmony. czcams.com/video/NgXoyXPe80Y/video.html
Thank you so much! That was a great explanation, I finally understood.
Loved the video and left 2 comments ...Got to minute 8 and subscribed and hit the bell!!
You are such an awesome teacher 👏👏👏
Thank you! 🙏
thanks! very useful and clear!
Oh nice, thx a lot but, where is the technique ?XD
Thank you so much for this video, visual and logic explicitly explained!! I just love the Chopin Norturne in C# - , will delve into it as soon as I get the music.
-_-
love it
Pianists do not tune pianos, folks. There was such a piano, so she played it - the way none of you will ever be able. Get over it
This is my 1st look at voicing. I was wondering just how good the 3rd voicing is in the first example @8:50 since it only uses 2 notes of the G Major chord, as well as there being more than one octave between the Bass and Tenor? Oh... because it says not to exceed an octave between the '"upper 3 voices'" @5:40 (see also @6:15)
so missing fifth is a part of bad voicing ? Does it apply for all the parts of triad in a scale that is from Tonic traid till the leading note triad ?
Marvellous!
My question is when we are moving fifth chord to root chord that is perfect cadence but how to arrange or selection of of notes? Like fifth to one and again fifth then on fifth how to arrange notes?
Hi there Thanks so much for this video. i just have one question: the root of augmented 6th is a minor 2nd above the dominant, for a MAJOR KEY (in other words a flat 6). But all examples i have looked at so far in a MINOR key, uses a normal 6 in stead of a flat 6 for the root of the augmented chord? Eg, your example in C# minor
Also : in a minor key, does the augmented 6th chord always resolve to a major 5, or can it also resolve to a minor dominant?
What I've heard till now is not to double the third in the "primary triads" (aka I, IV, V).
At the end I felt like Neo at the end of the Matrix!
Great content and excellent presentation. Digestible for someone still in the early stages of music theory study.
Brilliant. Thanks so much for creating this content and making it available here.
2:42 triggres in harmony theorists
The intresting part about this is that I'm probably going to use this to wright better house music. Pretty much all theory can be applied to all music
The alto at 0:40, the C, I'm actually hearing A? F to A not F to C as stated. Is this an error?
