Shelley I can feel your sadness, many years I had challenged students. I started giving table points for each group and on Fridays they went to the little store I had in the classroom. Do any of the Primary teachers in your school use the Secret Stories in their classrooms? I've seen some teachers use them and think they are excellent for teaching all the phonics skills. The kids, even the second/third/fourth graders seem to really enjoy the stories that help them remember the sounds.

As a prek teacher i have only ever taught a combination of ages 3-5. I get students who are still in diapers, limited verbal skills, and are learning to sort by colors with students who are starting to read, tie shoes, and have compex relationships with peers and adults. Its hard, but you have to really know the levels of your students before you can make finite decisions. You'll be amazing no matter what!

So jealous of all of your storage! In my district, we have cinder block walls with NO built in storage. That means we have old, heavy furniture that takes up a lot of space plus whatever additional storage (shelves, Sterilite drawers, etc.) that we bring in ourselves. Add desks/tables and 25+ students, and it gets quite crowded.

The tip about cleaning the classroom. What I have been told by homeroom teachers is, if you tell the students to clean the classroom or tidy up at the end of the day and they refuse or they do a Lac Leicester job leave the class as it is leave a note stating that the class did not clean up as per instructions. This then gives their homeroom teacher the opportunity to have a discussion with their class about what but what classroom and individual behaviours ought to look like and should look like when the teacher is not there. This is followed by the homeroom teacher getting the class to clean up the classroom. I know every teacher is different, in the province that I live in, and more specifically, in the school board that I reside in, this is such a common thread of ructions that I’ve received every time that I go into a classroom.

To all the veteran teachers here, I have a quick question for you! I teach in Ontario, Canada in a French school, so it may be a little different. For reference, I'm a 3rd year teacher and I taught 2nd grade for 5 months last year and kindergarten for the rest of the school year. I am possibly teaching a 1st/2nd grade for the first time this year. Do you have any tips? Do you think the schedule or the tips in this video would possibly work? Thanks so much!

You posted this 3 years ago! But I have a question...did you meet with every kid on Fridays?? It sounds like since everyone's doing 3 groups that day, and one of the groups is teacher table, you have to squeeze in your whole class over 3 segments. That doesn't seem right to me, can you explain?

Your kids are so young. I'd hate to he away from my kids daily while teaching other kids. That has to be a big ordeal in your day to day life. Hopefully you can be at home with yours more. Great teaching strategies. God 🙌 bless

I thought 3 grade levels at the same time while still studying to become a teacher (already had another diploma and was almost finished so it was allowed) and then after that as well. I loved it! You might find some inspiration in Montessori schools.

I'm in Canada so I know it's bound to be different, but in all my life growing up as a student & all my time as a teacher, I've always been in split grades or taught split grades with the exception of this upcoming year. I will have a straight grade this year, and everyone is so jealous of me! It's such a rarity to have a straight grade here, not really sure why but it's just always been that way. It's UNREAL that you get a full time teaching partner, we don't have that here, that would be so wonderful! Best of luck this year!!
