Climbing the Goatfinger Couloir on Mount Edwards in Colorado
zhlédnutí 15Před 7 hodinami
We climbed the Goatfinger Couloir (north face couloir) on Mount Edwards in mid-June 2024 in Colorado's Arapaho National Forest. Mount Edwards, a 13,860-foot summit, shares a trailhead with famed 14ers Grays and Torreys Peaks. It surprises me the Goatfinger Couloir isn't a more popular climb among couloir enthusiasts. This one has it all easy access, challenging climb, very steep (55 degrees nea...
Climbing 14ers Blanca Peak and Ellingwood Point in Colorado's Sangre de Cristo Mountains
zhlédnutí 93Před 16 hodinami
The day after summiting Little Bear Peak (see the previous video), we summited Ellingwood Point and Blanca Peak, two 14,000-foot mountains in Colorado's Sangre de Cristo Wilderness near the San Luis Valley the following morning. After camping overnight at Lake Como, we started heading up the snow around 4 a.m. and made quick work to the base of the main couloir on Ellingwood. We chose to climb ...
Climbing the Hourglass on Colorado's Little Bear Peak in snow and ice conditions
zhlédnutí 44Před dnem
There is no safer time to climb Little Bear Peak than as a snow climb through the Hourglass. As my sister is working toward completing Colorado's 14ers, I recommended we do this in early June 2024 since knew there was good, consolidated snow in the Hourglass. The conditions were about as good as it gets that day cold overnight freeze to create a solid crust on the snow and low winds and clear s...
Climbing Colorado's Mount Sneffels via the Lavender Col
zhlédnutí 47Před 21 dnem
We summited Mount Sneffels in the Uncompaghre National Forest near Ouray, Colorado, on Memorial Day weekend 2024. It is the 27th-highest peak in Colorado at 14,155 feet. The snow conditions could not have been better as it was continuous from the outhouse at the trailhead at 11,100 feet, where we camped the night before. After working our way up into Yankee Boy Basin surrounded by towering peak...
Climbing and Skiing Cristo Couloir on Quandary Peak
zhlédnutí 108Před měsícem
My sister and I climbed Cristo Couloir on Quandary Peak near Breckenridge, Colorado in early May 2024. This is one of the most popular couloir climbs on Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks due to its relatively gentle slope (approximately 40 degrees at its steepest) and its proximity to popular ski areas within a couple hours of Denver. The snow conditions weren't exactly ideal the day we chose a crus...
Climbing and Skiing Horseshoe Mountain via the Boudoir Couloir near Fairplay, Colorado

This was picture perfect day in mid-April for couloir climbing and skiing. We ascended the Boudoir Couloir on Horseshoe Mountain, located near Fairplay, Colorado, in the Mosquito Range. Horseshoe Mountain is a centennial peak at 13,918 feet high, ranking as the 68th-highest peak in the state. We couldn't have had much better conditions for this day. Crisp and cold in the morning for the ascent ...

Hiking and Skiing Culebra Peak in the Winter
zhlédnutí 41Před 3 měsíci
Culebra Peak is a 14,053-foot mountain in Colorado's Sangre de Cristo mountains, near the New Mexico border. This was my last summit of the 58 14,000-foot peaks in Colorado, reaching it on Feb. 16, 2024. What a day this was! It's generally an easy hike, though much longer in the winter due to roads being closed and thus having to start from the ranch headquarters at Cielo Vista Ranch. As can be...
Skiing Quandary Peak
zhlédnutí 58Před 4 měsíci
I skied Quandary Peak in late January 2024. Quandary is one of Colorado's 58 14,000-foot peaks, ranking as the 11th-highest mountain in the state at 14,272 feet. It's located near Breckenridge in the White River National Forest. This is one of the easiest 14ers to ski and when the trail to the summit is dry during the summer, it's among the easiest and most popular to hike.

Hiking Volcanoes in Nicaragua
zhlédnutí 245Před 4 měsíci
During a trip to Nicaragua in January 2024, I hiked volcanoes San Cristóbal, Momotombo, Cerro Negro, El Hoyo, Masaya, and Concepción, and visited the island of Ometepe and the cities of Granada and León. All of those volcanoes are active and San Cristóbal is the highest volcano in the country (though just shy of the highest mountain in Nicaragua). I used Vapues Travel to organize the eight-day ...

Hiking Nevado de Toluca near Mexico City
zhlédnutí 85Před 4 měsíci
Nevado de Toluca, about an hour from Mexico City, immediately became one of my favorite hikes that I've ever done. I think the weather and moody clouds played into that, but it really is a beautiful mountain regardless with two blue lakes in the volcanic crater at the top, and being the fourth-highest peak in Mexico (15,354 feet/4,679 meters). It's a pretty simple hike with a very easy scramble...

Ok…now THIS actually gave me some butterflies. It’s definitely narrow, as can be determined when you use both hands on one top-rock (so the size of the top-rock then has perspective), but the 360 camera makes it really difficult to see actual scale. The 1:40ish mark, however…that area is hardcore. Again, it could be the camera, but it looks like you’re nearly hanging on the right side of the ridge, and with no rope. I don’t know if you share this opinion, but this looks more hardcore than the knife edge on Capitol. Would you say that is true, or is the knife edge harrier? Lastly…watching this made me think you had done this before, as you walk across the top-rocks without checking if they are stable. From the video, ALL the rock looks loose, yes…all of it…even the stuff you walk on. Wicked cool vid man. PS are your boots the Lowa Expert GTX mountaineering boots?

      @andyschlichting Před 13 dny

It's definitely intense. The camera can make it a bit more extreme, but it's the most exposed thing I've done. Much more exposed and a steeper drop than the knife edge on Capitol. I have La Sportiva G Techs now, but I believe these were those Lowas you're referring to. They were great for me but I upgraded to something a little bit lighter and warmer.

I need more exposure to heights. Stuff scares me to death... one thing though... when you stand up and are on that ridge. I start to get a bit dizzy doing that as you cannot see the ground immediately in front of you aside from the ridge. You must not have any issue like that...?

The traverse itself is very stable. The route up Little Bear is a ton of loose rock and is one of the more notorious 14er routes for that, but I was fortunate to climb it with snow still in the couloir so I avoided most of that.
