    Marcel Hug is a gentleman and a consummate professional who has helped grow the sport of wheelchair racing. He and his predecessors Franz Nietlispach and Heinz Frei set the pace on the Track and Marathon during their reign as the absolute best in the sport. Paris should be quite interesting with each race on the track loaded with talent throughout all classes and gender.

    Thank you Bob for the excellent work you and Rick Janes are doing with Detours along with the generous support from Sports 'n Spokes. The combined experience and expertise you both possess along with over 30 years covering Para Sport is shown in the quality of your interviews. Your work and the wonderful work NBC(Peacock) did with the coverage of the US Paralympic Track and Field Trials established a new high water mark by a major US Network when it comes to coverage of US Para Sport. In my opinion, Amanda McGrory and her cohorts at NBC did an exceptional job. Using her experience as a Paralympic Gold medalist and as a professional Wheelchair Racer Amanda shed new light on the physical and psychological stress Wheelchair Racers of all classes and disabilities face at the US Track and Field Trials. It's my hope that with your work, as well as what is being done by NBC, America will be ready to host the Paralympics in LA in 2028. We've come a long way but the Paralympic movement has yet to break into the minds of most Americans. Thanks again Bob for coming out of retirement and educating America on these highly skilled athletes who will compete in Paris 2024, LA 2028 and then again in Brisbane 2032. Go Fighting Illini Wheelchair Sports! Go Team USA!

    Sharon and Brad were my neighbors back in Myra Ridge when we built houses across the street from each other. When Sharon went to the 88 Seoul, Korea Olympics we all knew she was going to do something special, which she did with a Gold Medal, and we all went crazy with pride for her, and the USA. Before she got home I asked Brad if I could have one of the local TV stations come to their house for the Welcome Home party and and an interview. Of course everyone was so excited to see her come into the house, beaming like the star she was, and when the TV reporter began his interview, my daughter, Allison, who was born just a few months earlier, got to sit in her lap. What a memorable moment for me, my neighbors, of course, Brad and Sharon, and every young boy or girl who were faced with a simIlar circumstances, and found out that a little persistence and belief in ones self can all the difference in the world. Bravo, Sharon, you still are that Superstar that was just across the way. God bless!

    Interesting interview although it ignores the setting up of recreational wheelchair sports just like they have recreational sports for able bodied athletes- Not much funding is required, the University already has the basketball courts and the balls-The problem is they don't have the athletes. Would you expect a student who wanted to play football apply to a school that didn't have football? That's what you are asking the student in a wheelchair to do. Raise his or her hand and hope by the time they graduate there would be a wheelchair basketball team. But no disabled athletes will apply to a school that doesn't already have the sport so it's a catch 22 and the University is well aware of it.

      @@AllAthletes Thank you, However I have already seen that interview when it came out. When my son a para was applying to college we got a rude awakening from our state univ back in 2001- The Athlete Director at the time was responding to my concerns which I registered with my state congressman and informed him my son could swim in the pool if he wanted any recreation because it was handicap accessible. Sounds like a terrific adaptive sports program. BTW, they still 20 years later have not one single wheelchair sport in a super large state univ part of the Big Ten. It's appalling.

    • @AllAthletes
      @AllAthletes Před 2 lety

      We're glad you saw that. We agree that there are not nearly enough opportunities for adaptive athletes at the collegiate level but there is some hope. We plan to speak with someone from the University of Alabama soon. They have put together an impressive program: bamaadapted.com/ and we recently interviewed Peter Hughes of Arizona who also has a great program: adaptiveathletics.arizona.edu/

    With the move to maximizing inclusion we will see more and more athletes who use a wheelchair excluded from the IPC movement. The biggest savior for wheelchair sports will come if we can serve the underserved in our sport. There are thousands of people in Africa, the Middle East and India who could be classified for wheelchair sports. However, these individuals are being excluded because of the impossibility of them finding a sports wheelchair that would allow them to be competitive. Meanwhile, we have a select few from wealthy nations who are currently racing in $40,000 racing chairs. The IPC and those mapping the future course of sport for people with a physical disability need to take a hard look at what and where they want the IPC to go. Personally, I am sick of elitism and this wall we are creating for the underserved from Africa, the Middle East and India.
