Haven & Herreshoff 12 1/2s | WoodenBoat Legends (Trailer)
From WoodenBoat's "Legends" series.
Fromm brokerage advertisements to cocktail-party boat talk, it’s a line of praise so often heard that it sometimes feels like rote hyperbole: "The Herreshoff 12½ is the best sailboat of its size ever designed." These diminutive yachts, measuring 12 1/2s on the waterline and 15'10" overall, were introduced by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company (HMCo.) in 1914 as the Buzzards Bay Boys’ Boat. They were designed, as the name implies, for teaching the fundamentals of sailing and yachting to young men on the often-boisterous waters of Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.
In the ensuing years, they proved to be equally effective at delivering the lessons of sailing to young women and adults, to be much more than a training boat, and to be suitable for waters beyond Buzzards Bay. “The 12 1/2,” said Jon Wilson, who founded WoodenBoat magazine in 1974, “is the ideal small boat.” Jon, and the community that grew up around this magazine, held this belief so dearly that, when he founded WoodenBoat School in 1981 as an extension of the magazine, “the 12 1/2,” he said, “was the obvious first choice” as the core boat for the school’s sailing and seamanship program.

Thanks Jon, After attending the WBS and taking the Elements of Sailing. My desire to build a boat was solidified by sailing in The 12 1/2’s. By Wednesday of that week I when up to the WBS and purchased the Haven 12 1/2 plans. This past June, 5 years later, I launched my Haven 12 1/2, Skylark, during the WB show. A massive thanks to the Wooden Boat magazine, School, and Show without your support I wouldn’t have known what a pleasure it is to sail a 12 1/2! Bob Emser P.s. Skylark won best of Show for owner built sailboat.

This "Stolen Valor" thing is a hoax. He did serve in the capacity of Command Sergeant Major without holding the rank. That's not at all uncommon especially in short staffed units and most frequently in Reserve and National Guard units. I served in a unit where a Captain filled a Major's Commanding Officer's slot. He was in fact the CO, we saluted and called him Boss. Lieutenants fill Captain slots all the time. So a Master Sergeant filling a Command Sergeant Major position in a Guard unit is far from extraordinary. None of this "Stolen Valor" BS at all. So go find a real issue... if you reds are capable of reasoned thought.

Hello Matt. You need to let viewersknow that Wooden Boat Magazine provides a forum that allows folks to promote assassination of former President Trump. JayInOz: As I said at the time, if the shooter had aimed for centre mass, trump would be under several feet of dirt right now. He was saved by the shooters youth, inexperience and inability to deal with high level stress- the latter understandable if he was aware that he was about to be thwarted with extreme prejudice- lovely term that. Wooden Boat Magazine is obviously a Left Wing Magazine that promotes assassinations of folks that aren't liberal Democrats. 3,600,000 posts in one of your " Bilge " political forums. 650,000 in your Building / Repair forum. 95% of that sub-forum has zero wooden boat experience.

I have an Elco 9.9 on my 1444 modified vee jon, and it’s crap. Not even close to a 9.9 gas motor. I’d say it’s equivalent to a 3-4 hp gas. And it’s buggy. I had to add a hydrofoil and 9 pitch prop just to get decent performance, and now it draws too many amps and cuts out. Waste of money. I’m not happy. Go higher than a 9.9, and you’ll pay out the arse for weighty batteries. For now, move on from Elco. Plus their customer service is awful and you can’t get these things maintenanced or repaired anywhere. Live and learn. I just flushed thousands down the toilet. Pricey mistake.

At one point someone gave us an old radio and servo from RC aircraft. We fit it to an M boat for rudder control only and were competitive with the vane boats.
