As a straight woman, I don’t see monogamy as “heteronormative”, but just a type of relationship anyone can choose to do. There are plenty of straight people who are polyamorous, asexual/nonromantic, independent, religiously chaste, or what have you, who don’t practice monogamy for personal, economic, spiritual or cultural reasons. I assume the same with homosexual relationships - there are many variables as to why anyone would practice monogamy. I’m incredibly romantic, introverted, practical, loyal, religious and I value saving myself for my future husband (never had a boyfriend because I dislike casual relationships and I’m comfortable being alone). Growing up, I’ve noticed that people who sleep around or jump from one relationship to the next tend to be unstable people, regardless of gender or sexuality. I wish people would appreciate sex and/or marriage as the heavenly gifts they are and not take them for granted.

A caring and a real Monogamous relationships ONLY work if folks take the initiative to have self awareness and take pride in honesty. There can’t be a monogamous relationship if some are not willing to do the work of self love, self respect and maybe getting mental help if needed. Most of us gay men are or were exposed to much trauma of rejection. It’s natural to be loved, and appreciated. But the tender and most important moments when love is to be- but it’s sometimes not there, some become susceptible of confusion, and mistaking sex from many different people as “love” Society will tell you its ok to be promiscuous, and act on your wild emotions. Apparently, thats just “the culture” but why? That’s just how they keep us suppressed, sick and weak. Monogomy is important to me. Because someone sees me and I see them!

Monogamy is often seen as an assault on a man's freedom. This is insecurity, because I don't see monogamists on the attack, unless-- there is a divide within a couple. Then it's a problem.

I have NEVER encountered a strictly monogamous gay couple.

Monogamy is attainable if that’s what you want. I came out in the early 80’s. It was a rough time with the emergence of AIDS. I was dating and enjoying my newly found self. By the time I was 27, I had already lost 2 boyfriends, 1 to leukemia and the other one to AIDS. I wanted a relationship, but most men were players back then. After not having any luck dating, I started seeing a shrink. He made realize I was not to blame for my failure in relationships. When I had an appointment, I would take myself out to dinner and enjoy my company. One Thursday night after dinner in the fall, I decided to go into Tiffany. I was nosing around looking at things that caught my eye. Someone tapped my shoulder. I turned around to face a taller, good looking man. Brown hair and eyes, a mustache and an inviting smile. He was dressed all in beige. He asked if I saw anything I liked. I thought “o.k., who’s screwing with me?”. After a few minutes of small talk, he asked if he could buy me a drink. I thought why not? We sat in a booth talking, lots of smiling. It was nice. 4 days later he called, asking me if he could take me to dinner, “anyplace you’d like to go”. I told him I was busy (Murphy Brown and Designing Women were on that night) and asked for a rain check. He sounded disappointed but said yes. After 20 minutes I thought how stupid I just was and called him back. We had a wonderful night. I thought “why is he nervous?”. After a few dates, he told me that he was seeing 2 other guys. I thought o.k. He was an adult and not living with his folks, he could do what he wanted. We dated throughout the year, as the months went by, he seemed to have more time for me. We were approaching our 1st anniversary. I told him that after 1 year, I wanted to be exclusive. He didn’t say too much. A week later he called saying he wasn’t ready to settle down, and asked if we could still be friends. I said I had many friends and was looking for something exclusive. I told him goodbye. After a week he called. He asked if he could take me to dinner. I said sure. He looked good, but preoccupied. After we ordered drinks, he started talking. He told me he’d been thinking what his life would be without me, and said I brought more into his life than anyone ever had. Would I take him back. I said yes. Then he asked what I’d like to do for our first anniversary. I said anything as long as it was expensive. After 3:years, we moved in to a little house together. We were excited making it our house. Both our families were happy for us. A few years ago, I wasn’t feeling well. Many doctors later, we found someone who came highly recommended. She wanted to do an exploratory on me. I was nervous. I woke up in recovery to find my husband (yes, we did get married) holding my hand. His eyes looked very watery. I said “hi”. I asked what happened. He said “it’s cancer”. Then it was my turn to cry. I had stage3 cancer. I had to begin oral chemo and radiation immediately. Then I’d have to have surgery. Infusion chemo after. I was very scared. He was too. After almost a year of treatment we went to see my surgeon for our last appointment. We went through her report, then she said “please don’t take this wrong, but I’m going to miss you two. In all my years as a surgeon, I’ve never worked with a couple who were more devoted to each other than you both”. We were dumbfounded. It was very flattering, but sad too. To think so many couples out there not being happy. It’s been a very rough few years. I had another cancer diagnosis. And last year we had to cancel our anniversary trip because I had to have emergency surgery. I look into my husbands eyes and see his fear. I know I’m very lucky, but I wish it could be like it used to be. In October, we’re going away for a week. He can relax, and we can have fun with our new puppy. How on earth did 34 years fly by so fast? I love him so much.

Thank you for sharing Quincy. I’ve been going through something similar recently and I thinks it’s admirable to remain friends with someone you’ve had a romantic relationship with. 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃 The trailhead for a truly spectacular autumn hike is just a few minutes from the Flume parking lot. Check out the Falling Waters Franconia Ridge Old Bridal Path loop. Most hikers do the loop in that order, but I prefer the reverse. It's a moderate to strenuous all day hike and the trail can get quite crowded, especially in peak foliage season. Start early. Before you leave, or even if you don't do the hike, check out the story of the controversial end of mountaineer, Guy Waterman, who decided to make that hike his last on earth.
