Our company’s mission is to keep alive the rich mechanical, industrial, and transportation heritage of our state through the continual operation of our vintage steam and diesel locomotives and passenger coaches, as well as the operation & maintenance of the facilities and infrastructure that support these. We welcome visitors from throughout the state of Connecticut, the New England region and all over the world to ride our railroad, relax aboard our riverboat and visit our unique facilities.

Those kids then left society to join the circus
Our family rode the Polar Express train at Essex last evening at 5:30 and had a fantastic time. Decorations were beautiful. Everything was well planned from snacks and treats in the gift shop to the parking and employees. Each train car has a designated elf who narrates the program and leads interactive games and sing a longs. Our elf was Aspen who was terrific! He was so energetic and animated engaging everyone. Santa arrived on the train and gave each child a small gift and Mrs. Claus bakes cookies. It was a magical evening.
I was there just a couple of days ago, and I-a former railroader-loved it all.

We did this our children when they where small. Santa would land on the train and come through and play Christmas carols on his guitar. Worth the price of admission for children of all ages.

Please extend a big hello and thank you to Mr. J. David Conrad, an extremely patient teacher and mentor when I had the privilege of working at the Valley Railroad in the 1980's. Hope to stop by in the fall of 2019 on my way to the WW&F Railway Museum for volunteer work.
Definitely don’t make people like J David Conrad anymore. I’ve had the pleasure of having him as my class instructor along with the others in the class for hand on the throttle.

I'm from Charlotte NC.& have done this before in Petersburg WV,Roanoke VA.& Bonsal NC.on 2 different 0-4-0T steam engines.What I see here's a little more different from what I normally take in a typical student train engineer lesson.May be real pricey to take it & real far for me to travel to.But with the proper money & travel arrangments,One day,I'd like to come to Essex & take the lesson.Would be a real experience tryin' out a larger steam locomotive if I'm up to the challenge.Have just the right historical railroad uniform to prove it.Would bring out the train engineer inside me.Make me a modern-day Casey Jones since I play his namesake great-grandson & follow the right rules to make a perfect run on the rails.Have over 40 years of railfan experience since 1970.Hope to try it when the time's right.Signed:"Engineer"Dave Belk.
