Xantus János Állatkert - Győr Zoo (Hungary)
ZOO HISTORY
The first zoo-like institution was established in Győr in 1962 in Püspökerdő, next to the Forestry timber yard. The game park was created on the Mosoni-Danube floodplain with the aim of presenting domestic big game species and predators. For example, the brown bear was also visible.

The Forestry institution was still operating in 1966; according to stories, it had a significant attendance, but exact data are not available. The flood of 1966 put an end to its operation, during which most of the animals died, and some were relocated to private houses. After the sad event, the decision was made to establish a new zoo in Győr as well. By decision of the Győr City Council VB, the "May 1st Cultural Park" was handed over on May 1, 1967, which consisted of two parts: Wildlife Park and Amusement Park. "Május 1. Kultúrpark" operated as an independent budget institution until the end of 1986.
Initially, the main purpose of the Vadaspark was to present domestic wild and indigenous domestic animals, as well as to spread knowledge. In the mid-seventies, the collection was expanded with exotic species, and ten years later the Vadaspark was transformed into a zoo. On January 1, 1987, the "Május 1. Kultúrpark" ceased to exist and the Leisure and Sports Center was established by merging several institutions. The development of the zoo continued, the number of species presented increased.
The Aquarium and Terrarium House was built in 1988. In 1993, the Mayor's Office established the Municipal Sports Directorate as the legal successor of the Leisure and Sports Center through an institutional merger. Within this, the zoo was a relatively independent unit. Unfortunately, no positive changes took place in the following period. The interest of visitors and the level of development also decreased, as a result of which the suitability of the institution was questioned in 1996. The technical condition of the garden gradually deteriorated, it was not possible to renovate it, and the quality of both animal husbandry and public services declined. The proposal to close the zoo was soon made.
But the population of the city stood up for the zoo and the administration of the city of Győr decided to keep the facility. On April 1, 1997, the independent Xantus János Zoo was established by withdrawing the scope of activities and assets under the management of the Sports Directorate of the City of Győr County.

A professionally well-trained, young team took over the leadership. It was then that Dr. György Andréka became the head of the zoo, who was given a few years to prove the institution's right to exist. He considered the main goal of the management to improve the quality of the zoo to an appropriate level. This included not only the improvement of the keeping and presentation conditions of the animals, but also the promotion of educational and zoopedagogical activities. Kht. was able to renew itself in the following years, the number of visitors tripled, so the Győr Zoo became one of the most visited cultural facilities in the region.

The zoo, which opened in 1967, has undergone significant renewal in recent decades. It presents more than 500 individuals of 100 animal species in large enclosures, in conditions similar to their original habitat.

By 2007, for the zoo's 40th birthday, the modernization of the old areas was completed, and all the residents moved to a new enclosure. Meanwhile, the zoo underwent a name change. The new name of our company: Xantus János Zoo Public Nonprofit Limited Liability Company, which started its operation on May 1, 2009.
Visitors can observe the everyday life of the zoo under shady trees in a well-kept, beautiful environment, which offers a meaningful program for both children and adults.
