      Sorry for the delay and thanks for the message. Although I've not used that foil, it should work. The only thing is it could be difficult to learn with. I would advise if you are learning then try to use a big foil as it will help with the take off as you will require less speed to activate it but a bigger foil will also give you more time from take off before starting your pump. I was using the Axis PNG1150 for a long time while learning which had an area of over 1700cm. I hope this helps 👍

    I see you are using a cylinder balance board (with a piece of pipe). As a beginner, would it benefit me to use a half-sphere balance board? My first attempt on a foil had me falling sideways, not just fore and aft.

    • @iandavidv
      @iandavidv Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks for your comment 👍 I've not been on a half sphere one I'm afraid but I would say that it would be easier to start with. The other thing you can do to make it easier is to try a balance board on a non slippery surface - thick carpet is best as it creates more friction on the cylinder and slows it down. If you have any other questions just let me know. Thanks

    Thanks for all the brilliant & inspiring videos! So great to follow your journey. I'm just starting out & wondering what you'd recommend as a first foil for dock starts (& hopefully in the future light winging & riding tiny swell). I'm looking at the png 1150, 1300, 1310 or the art pro 1401. I'm 83kg, 47yrs old and not super fit. Any guidance would be massively appreciated. Thanks again for the awesome videos and inspiration!

      Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it 👍 and great that you are looking to get into the dock starts! I've only been on the 1150 PNG which is an awesome wing. It is easy to use and has a really low stall speed which is great for dock starts. Although I've not tried the other wings, the 1310 is the bigger version of the 1150 so it should in theory have an even lower stall speed. I know through friends that the 1300 and 1401 are higher aspect compared to the 1150 and 1310. They are also meant to be great wings but they would probably be tricky to start off with if you are learning. I hope this helps and feel free to let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hi Ian. First of all, congratulations on your progress! I am trying to learn how to pump and I feel my progress is kind of slow. Not that I am stuck, but certainly I was hoping to progress a bit faster at this stage. If you have time, would you mind having a look at this video and letting me know your opinion? czcams.com/video/UEE1DQcoX84/video.html For some reason I struggle to maintain speed and altitud and I end up touching the water. I don't stall so often now like I did before, but still I cannot pump more than 15 or 20 seconds when I'm lucky. I thought you migtht be able to give me some advice. I would really appreciate it. I am using a GONG FOIL ALLVATOR FRONT WING X-OVER - XXL (2200cm) and a GONG Matata board 4'2. My weight is 70kg. Thank you so much in advance for your help!

      Hi thanks for the message! Great work on the dock starting and your video looks great. I have a few quick wins for you that will hopefully help. The first is to try to stay high on the mast. Without going into detail, the higher on the mast you are the more efficient the wing will be as it is closer to the water surface. The next thing is to really try to be light on your feet on the upward phase of the pump. Really try to unweight as the foil is rising and almost try to lift your back heel off the board on the way up. The kit you are on works fine and there's nothing wrong with it but just as a note, it is a large low aspect foil (I had the same one) and it does require a lot of effort to keep pumping it. It has great lift but it is a slow foil that requires a lot of effort which is one reason why it is hard to pump for longer. I hope this helps and just let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck and thanks 👍

      Sorry for the delay in responding. The board I was on in the video was my old Gong kite foil board which was 4'6 at 28L. It was a good board but now I'm using a Cabrinha Autopilot which is a bit bigger at 4'10 and 40L. It still works very well though. Your board should work fine and with it being small it will be easier and more efficient to pump which is good. It might be slightly tricky at first to take off and land on but you'll definitely be able to crack it with practice 👍 I've not used the Kujira before but I've heard it's good. Definitely a good idea to stay on your Naish and progress down to it once you get used to it. The Kujira will require more speed on take off and for you to pump straight away but again it should work well 👍

    How do you keep the foil from hitting the front corner leg of your platform ? It looks like you’ve angled your board away slightly from the dock so I guess you’re jumping forwards and slightly to the right as you take off ? I’m using the Sabfoil Leviathan 1350 which is super wide and I’m pretty short (5’6) so not sure my geometry works for this kind of platform 😂 . Do you think there’s a theoretical foil width limit for a given person’s arm span ?

    • @iandavidv
      @iandavidv Před 9 měsíci

      Hi, I am very sorry for the delay. Thanks for the comment on this and have you managed to give a similar platform a try? Yes so that's exactly right, on take off I slightly angle the board out so that it does not hit the end/leg of the ladder. In the video I was on the Axis 1150 PNG (wingspan of 1150mm) but I have used the SPG glide 220 which has a wingspan of around 1200mm. The glide 220 works fine but I find I have to angle the board away even more to stop it hitting which would be the case with your Leviathan 1350. Sorry I am not sure about a foil width limit but a more I think a slightly more explosive take off would be needed with a wider span foil to compensate for the extra angle the board it from the platform. I hope this helps and just let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks

      @iandavidv Před 10 měsíci

      Sorry for the delay. I no longer have my SUP Foil cross over boards but it was great for SUP Foiling along with winging on the waves. I have a few clips of it on CZcams within my channel. Although, they were quite big (I had a 110L and then dropped to a 90L) for winging they still worked well in the waves. Yes I have been learning the downwind SUP foil over the last few months and it is super hard but like everything it is just practice. I now own a Signature Performance Gear Pegasus 2 Downwind Board which is 7'8 in length, 20' wide and 105L. It is amazing for sup foiling small unbroken waves and I can wing it in super light conditions from about 12mph with a big 6m hand wing. Downwind boards definitely open up loads of opportunities and although they are expensive I think they are worth it. They are a bit unstable for winging to start off with as they are so narrow but I have found that this is something I have got used to. Hopefully I'll try to create a video on it at some point 👍 if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Thabks

      Thanks for your comment. If you are just starting out at dock starting I would suggest looking for a second hand board, just because when you are learning you will probably knock and drink the board. I learnt on a 4'6 28L Gong Kite foil board which was fine and did the job. However, I now dock start on my prone surf foil board which is a Cabrinha Autopilot at 4'10 and 40L. I just use this as I like the rocker line on it and how it pumps. I would probably suggest something around this size that I currently use as it will make the learning process easier. Really short boards will be tricky to learn on and make the take off harder. I hope this helps, thanks 👍

    • @iandavidv
      @iandavidv Před rokem

      Hi, thanks for your message! It's a bit of a tricky one to answer. If you don't have access to a boat then I would suggest looking into any local watersports centres that provide EFoil lessons or rental. EFoiling is a great and quick way to get used to the foil. Dock starting is very tricky to learn, it's not impossible to start with by any means but it take it's time, similarly with surf foiling. Learning to surf foil first with no other foil experience is fine but it just requires a really quiet spot/break with no one nearby. The hard part with dock starting is the take off/landing on the board and with surf foiling it's the pop up and initial foot position before you even get a chance to practice the foil. Both will take time but it is doable. If you have access, winging is also a great way to learn to foil as you are able to get a lot of time on foil and you don't need to worry about the take off/pop up as with dock starting and surf foiling. I first of all learnt to kite foil as I had a kitesurfing background, then I moved to SUP foiling, wing foiling and finally dock starting which was the hardest to learn. I hope this helps 👍

      Thanks for the message, really appreciate it! For the SUP I was on a Naish S26 Hover Board at 110L and 5'10 in length. In one of the other SUP foil clips I'm on the Starboard Take Off which is the 90L and 5'2 in length. That board is a tricky one to get going especially when it's choppy but when up on foil it's epic to turn and pump back out. The prone board I use is 4'6 and 28L. I weight 75kg when fully suited up as well. Thanks again 👍🤙

Great board and very stable for me. In one of the other SUP foil clips I'm on the Starboard Take Off which is the 90L and 5'2 in length. That board is a tricky one to get going especially when it's choppy but when up on foil it's epic to turn and pump back out. Both of the boards are rigid/hard boards. I've not yet tried an inflatable board but I'd be keen to see how different it feels. Just let me know if you need any further info. Thanks 🤙👍

    • @iandavidv
      @iandavidv Před 2 lety

      Hey man, thanks for your message! My ladder only has 3 steps but it is fine. I am sure either 4 or 5 would be fine as long as it is high enough for you to launch your foil off. The dimensions of the combination ladder I have when it is used as a platform are as follows: Width 36cm Length 179cm (platform and boards) Height 95cm This is enough height for me to launch my 75 cm mast off. I have another video on the ladder set up if you haven't see it yet: czcams.com/video/eT1HxwnPP5g/video.html And also a few others that may be helpful. Thanks again 👍🤙

    Hi, Nice video. I managed to start from a small stepladder (czcams.com/video/AC0yMzY6Qls/video.html). Much more light weight that the ladder, but more difficult and you need a little drop off underwater, at least for me.
