Exploring Philippines' War-Torn City 🇵🇭 | Marawi City
The Battle of Marawi City, which occurred from May to October 2017, was a significant armed conflict in the Philippines. It erupted when a local extremist group, Maute, pledged allegiance to ISIS and laid siege to Marawi, a city in Mindanao. The battle was a response to a government attempt to capture Isnilon Hapilon, the leader of the extremist faction Abu Sayyaf.
The conflict resulted in a brutal and protracted urban warfare situation. Philippine armed forces, with assistance from the United States and Australia, engaged in intense combat against the militants. The fighting led to extensive damage in Marawi, displacing thousands of residents and causing a humanitarian crisis. After five months of intense combat, the Philippine government declared victory in October 2017, but the city lay in ruins.
Six years after the Battle of Marawi City, the situation has evolved significantly. While scars from the conflict still mark the landscape, the city has made considerable progress towards recovery and rehabilitation. Marawi is now generally safe for residents to move around, but challenges persist.
Reconstruction efforts have been underway, with damaged buildings gradually being rebuilt, and basic services like water and electricity restored. The government, in collaboration with international agencies, has made strides in addressing the housing needs of displaced residents, allowing some to return to their homes.
However, pockets of ruins and debris remain, serving as poignant reminders of the intense battle. The city's economic and social fabric is still on the path to complete recovery, with some businesses reopening and schools resuming classes.
The security situation has improved significantly, thanks to the government's efforts to root out extremist elements. The Philippine military maintains a presence to ensure safety, and checkpoints are in place. While the threat of sporadic violence persists, the overall atmosphere has become more stable.
Marawi City's journey to full recovery is ongoing, but the resilience of its residents and the commitment of the government to rebuild offer hope for a brighter future, where the scars of the past will eventually fade into history.

    @markosmataasii2000 Před rokem

    Hi Heita, Thanks for visiting Davao and joining the Kadayawan Festival. By the way, Kadayawan is not a religious festival unlike the one in Sinulog (paying tribute to Sto. Nino of Catholic Church), but it's more a cultural festival that celebrates the bountiful harvest and unity, honoring the icons of Davao namely Mt. Apo (tallest mountain in the country), Durian (king of fruits), Philippine Eagle (largest eagle native to PH & Davao/Mindanao particularly and also the national bird) and Waling Waling (queen of orchids, native orchids only found in Davao area). The festival also pays tribute to the 11 original native tribes living in the city. That's why you will see a lot of variation of dance, music and clothing because each native have their own culture, tradition and even languages. It's the best month to visit Davao as well since that''s the season of harvest of many fruits where you can buy many and cheaply. Davao is the fruit basket capital of the Philippines, it's the main producer of Durian, Mangosteen, Banana, Marang, Rambutan and many more, in which Davao also as top exporter of these fruits and even sell them to other cities & provinces like Manila, Cebu. I say this festival is much more inclusive since this transcends religion and culture. I recommend you to visit the traditional houses during Kadayawan in Magsaysay Park and eat many fruits in any public markets. Hopefully, you can visit again.

Before WW2, Davao City was known as Little Tokyo because there were so many Japanese working in abaca farms. I once assisted a Korean man who was having problems with his motorcycle. When I asked him what was wrong, he stated it needed to be pushed. So I pushed it, and he asked if it was okay. Of course, I replied. Then I pushed it hard, and the motor started after a few seconds. He was going to hand me a 500 peso bill, which surprised me because it was such a minor task. So I declined and told him it was fine; there was no need to give me money. He rejects and wishes to compensate me with money. I politely rejected, and after declining his offer he finaly thanks me. 😁 We are not interested in the money. We simply wish to assist without expecting anything in return. Because it will never felt good if we accept anything. But on the other hand, they will also feel guilty if we refuse. Either way, I think there is nothing wrong about it. We will take our good deeds and talk about it in tagay sessions :)
