My daughter (Australian citizen) has lived and studied overseas and now wants to come to Australia for higher studies and has never lived in Australia (only visited Australia for holidays). She was born overseas to an Australian parent and that is how how she acquired Australian nationality. Unis also use the term "course" when they're talking about your degree. So they are probably talking about which degree you're going to study. You'll select your subjects when you've accepted your offer and created a student account at your uni.

    • @careerchampau9144
      @careerchampau9144 Pƙed 9 měsĂci

      I would give VTAC a call for their advice. They will probably know the bridging courses available to you that are accepted by Monash. But I would guess there's probably not an option you can get done before the start of Semester 1. The other thing to do would be to contact Monash to see if they have any recommendations. At other unis, it can be possible to bridge to a degree with a Maths Methods prerequisite by starting in a similar degree that requires General Maths. If you haven't already, it might also be a good idea to check the subjects you'll do in the Commerce degree to be sure you're keen to do them. Often not selecting a subject in VCE is a sign that you're not that enthusiastic about it, so it's good to check you're definitely enthusiastic about the degree that requires that base level of knowledge. Good luck!

    • @careerchampau9144
      @careerchampau9144 Pƙed rokem

      Good question. The amount is per student, not per year. It's also across all HELP loans, including FEE-HELP, HECS-HELP, OS-HELP and SA-HELP. So each person has about $108,000 they can borrow total (or about $113,000 in 2023). You might like to ask someone like Study Brisbane or a similar organisation for your area for more info. 👍

    Hi Tom, thanks for explaining everything, we are all very grateful. I'm just wondering what is the highest degree you can take straight out of highschool with no pre-requisites- I know it must be an undergraduate degree but there are so many options its overwhelming. Some more questions: Whats an honours degree as in whats the difference between a bachelor degree and a bachelor honours degree? is the general structure 3 years under graduate degree and 1+ year postgraduate degree? does the term postgraduate mean the same as graduate? and when you apply, are you applying for the overall degree or do you have to register for every individual subject within that degree? and lastly, I'm aiming to study psychology at FlindersSA, any advice? Thanks so much 🙂

    • @careerchampau9144
      @careerchampau9144 Pƙed rokem

      So many great questions. Yes, graduate and postgraduate are similar terms but we don't really use 'graduate' when we talk about uni study in Australia - we usually use postgraduate or PG. Honours degrees are technically postgraduate degrees but can be embedded into Bachelor degrees. These degrees would be the highest type of degree you could enter from school. Doing a degree with embedded Honours can be helpful because you can feel a lot more confident that you'll get to do your Honours year (unlike other Honours programs, where you apply in your final year of your Bachelor and hope for a place). For psychology, doing Honours is especially important. Here's some more info on the study pathways to registration as a psychologist - psychology.org.au/psychology/careers-and-studying-psychology/studying-psychology/study-pathways It's very competitive to get to each stage of the process, so it's a great idea to start with a 4 year psychology degree that includes Honours. Not all unis have them, but Flinders seem to 👍

    I want to study Dental Science at Latrobe. The ATAR isn’t really a worry for me, rather the subject prerequisites is. So It says you need to complete Biology, English and Chemistry. I’m not not biology. Any recommendations on how I can get try and cover the biology prerequisite and also would any bridging/online courses need to be completed before I apply for my course or can it be done after?

    • @careerchampau9144
      @careerchampau9144 Pƙed rokem

      Usually you'll need to meet all the prerequisites by a certain date before offers come out (usually a few weeks before). Medicine and Dentistry programs can be particularly picky about what they accept as equivalent to Year 12 Biology so I'd suggest calling VTAC first to run through some of your local bridging course options, then Latrobe to double-check they accept the options you'd prefer to use. UniLearn is one national option you could look at, but can take a few months to do. Often there are local options that are shorter. For example, here in Queensland you can do a 4 week face-to-face bridging course at UQ at the end of the year that is marked in time for the dentistry offers in January. Good luck!

      @careerchampau9144 Pƙed rokem

      A Certificate III will probably give you a high enough rank to get into a Griffith Bachelor of Business, which is great. But the first thing QTAC will do is check if you've met the English prerequisite for that degree. If you check the course page, you'll see Griffith would like you to have a pass in Essential English or General English across Unit 3&4, so if you have one of these, you should be okay. You can see other things that Griffith will accept as meeting their English prerequisite here (which does show that they won't accept a Certificate III at the moment) - www.qtac.edu.au/english-subject-prerequisite/

      We don't really have the same pre-med system in Australia as some other countries. But if you need a prerequisite for a medicine program or a degree that leads to medicine (e.g. Bachelor of Medical Science at Griffith University), yes, there are some online bridging courses you can do. The ones I mention in this video usually work, but just double-check that the uni you're interested in will accept them. What happens if you fail a unit/subject?

    • @careerchampau9144
      @careerchampau9144 Pƙed rokem

      It can depend on the university. Often failing one subject won't be much of an issue and you take it again later and just have to pay for it again. But if you fail the subject a second time or you fail a certain percentage of your subjects in a study period or year, other rules can kick in that impact your enrolment at uni. For example, you might be put on academic probation - www.anu.edu.au/students/program-administration/assessments-exams/expected-academic-performance-for-coursework If you're studying in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) -- ie. the government are paying some of your fees for you -- failing a few units could mean you lose your Commonwealth Supported Place funding. This can make a degree a lot more expensive. This link has some more info about the rules for CSP: www.studyassist.gov.au/help-loans-commonwealth-supported-places-csps/low-completion-rate It's also good to know that if you fail because there are other things going on in your life outside of your control, or you have a health condition that got worse over the study period, you might be able to get your results "wiped" and your fees credited. • @careerchampau9144
      @careerchampau9144 Pƙed rokem

      If you're talking about subjects within your degree that have prerequisites, they are usually other subjects from your degree that give you foundation knowledge you need before you tackle the harder subject. I do talk about this briefly in the 'How uni works' video. If you want/need to do a subject in your degree, but haven't done the prerequisite subject before it, you can sometimes apply for a waiver of the prerequisite. People usually only do this when they feel like they've covered the same content in a similar subject. And you need the uni to agree to waive the prerequisite before you're able to enrol. Hope this helps! If you're still not sure what to do, I'd suggest reaching out to your course coordinator.

    • @careerchampau9144
      @careerchampau9144 Pƙed rokem

      @@liamgleeson8526 It is pretty unusual for specific subjects within a degree to require a school subject as a prerequisite, if the degree itself doesn't require the subject as a prerequisite, but it can happen. I'd ask your university about it. It may just be a recommendation or your uni may ask you to do a university-level subject that they consider equivalent to Maths Methods before you do the subject that lists Maths Methods as a prerequisite. This happens a lot in Engineering degrees - students who haven't completed Specialist Maths at school often need to take a university-level subject that's considered equivalent to Specialist Maths before they can take other engineering maths subjects. @@liamgleeson8526 no worries! Also, great question. There is no minimum number of preferences for QTAC - you could just put one, but it wouldn't be recommended unless you felt super confident you'd get an offer for that course. So most people will put at least three, with at least one of those being a course they're really confident they'll get an offer for. QTAC have some more info about preferencing here: www.qtac.edu.au/preferences/

    Can international students get ATAR adjustments? I'm currently in NZ but when I apply for a university in Australia, I will still be considered an international applicant because I'm Chinese and in the same year that I apply for uni, I'd have just started to apply for citizenship - so I'm guessing that I'll be considered international? Also, how do the adjustments apply if I'm planning to apply for medicine (direct entry or provisional entry)? Sorry for the late comment.

    • @careerchampau9144
      @careerchampau9144 Pƙed rokem

      If you're applying for medicine, it's good to know that most unis won't accept adjustments to your rank. UQ are the exception and give adjustments for some Year 12 subjects and uni studies completed at school. You need to be either an Australian student studying overseas or any student completing Year 12 in Australia, so I don't think you'll be eligible. But it can't hurt to ask, just in case. study.uq.edu.au/admissions/undergraduate/review-admission-schemes/subject-incentive-scheme

      Good question. It really depends on whether you're an Australian resident or not. If you are, you can apply through the Tertiary Admissions Centre(s) (TAC) that handle admissions for the university/ies you're interested in. If not, you usually apply directly to the university and might use an agent to help you. If you'd like more info about how to apply, I'd suggest calling/emailing a TAC or contacting one of the universities directly. Good luck!

      If you're not an Australian citizen, it will probably be quite difficult to get a scholarship to study here. You would usually need great marks and, even then, the scholarship would probably only be a discount on the fees you would be expected to pay for your course. But I'd suggest reaching out to an organisation that helps international students who'd like to study in Australia, like Study Queensland - www.studyqueensland.qld.gov.au/ Good luck!

    In uni, how does the acceptance system work? If it's dependable from which university, how does it work at universities, e.g, Macquarie University, UTS, UNSW and USYD In other countries across the world, there's an apperant "university essay" and I'm wondering if it applies to Australia. Do they accept by every factor, or some factors. Thank you dearly.

    • @careerchampau9144
      @careerchampau9144 Pƙed rokem

      Great question. Essays as a part of entrance to university is very rare in Australia. Most universities in Australia just use academic merit to select people. That means everyone who applies for a degree is assigned a "selection rank" and this rank is used to figure out who gets a place. Selection ranks can come from different things. Most of the time it's your Year 12 studies (e.g. ATAR in Australia, A Levels in UK), but you can also get a rank from previous university study or other completed tertiary qualifications (e.g. diplomas). Sometimes, if a degree is very competitive, a university will use other criteria to assess applicants for entry. Medicine and dentistry degrees are good examples - they are super popular, so just using a rank to separate candidates is usually not doable - there will be too many people with the same rank. So unis will use other criteria to help separate candidates out, such as UCAT ANZ score and performance in an interview. Creative degrees might also assess people for entry differently. Some will just use audition/portfolio for selection, instead of a selection rank (e.g. most fine arts degrees). As a general guide, at UNSW, USYD, UTS and Macquarie, the types of degrees that might use other criteria in addition to selection rank include medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, law and fine arts degrees. Good luck!

    Thanks for the informative video! How do repayments work? Do they automatically get deducted from your salary? I just started studying part time at Uni and noticed in my latest pay check nothing came out to go towards the Fee-HELP loan

    • @careerchampau9144
      @careerchampau9144 Pƙed 2 lety

      Good question. Usually you let your employer know that you have a HELP debt when you start with them so they can deduct the repayments for you when they process you pay each pay cycle. It's usually a part of the TFN form you do when you start a new job. If you're with the same employer, but now have a HELP debt, I think you can just contact the payroll folks to let them know. They should be able to sort it out for you. 👍

    • @careerchampau9144

    How many subjects we need to study in a masters degree in commerce field like MBA and so on . Meanwhile, total subjects in a semester major+ minor?

    • @careerchampau9144
      @careerchampau9144 Pƙed 2 lety

      Not 100% sure I understand your question, but usually a full-time degree will be 4 subjects per semester or 8 subjects per year. This is pretty standard across undergraduate degrees (bachelor degrees). When it comes to Master degrees, including MBAs, the structure can be different. For example, the QUT MBA is usually one subject at a time and each subject is shorter and more "intensive" than a "normal" undergraduate subject (ie. more work per week and more frequent assessments). Majors and minors are less common in postgraduate degrees as well. Usually you are choosing something pretty specific when you choose a post-grad degree, so you might have some electives but you're less likely to have a formal "major" or "minor". If you're still a bit unsure, I'd suggest contacting the universities you're interested in and asking them to show you some course/degree plans so you can see how the degrees you're interested in are structured. Good luck! đŸ’Ș

The best financial support for accommodation while studying would be Youth Allowance or Austudy payments (+ Rent Assistance) from Centrelink/Services Australia. I'd recommend looking into those payments to see if you are (or can become) eligible. Good luck!

      haha Yeahhhhh... I don't think it's on many people's radar unfortunately. The legislation seemed to go through on the DL and the media focus was on course fee changes, not the SLE. There's some vague language about specific courses being excluded from the 7 years but so far that just seems to be in order to give medicine students CSP for longer. The thing is, there are a lot of other non-med students out there who are interested in post-grad - ie. you :) At least you'll have 7 years of CSP from this year - it's been hard to find info outside of the legislation until the last couple of weeks, but it seems like everyone's SLE starts from this year (or later, if they haven't been to uni yet). Good to know :)
