Hello, thanks for looking in to our channel in which we try to pass on helpful bits of information which I’ve picked up over the years working for BBC Television. Today I’d like to talk about phantom power. Most of us know that you have to switch it on when you are using capacitor or other powered microphones. But what are we doing when we switch it on? Moving coil, or dynamic, microphones don’...
HOW TO CONNECT A MICROPHONE TO YOUR AUDIO EQUIPMENT

Hi! Thanks for looking in. I worked for BBC Television for 25 years as a sound man and I’d like to pass on some of the wrinkles and tips I’ve picked up during that time. In our first video we talked about how moving coil microphones work. We’ll be looking at other types of mics in future videos, but this one is about connecting up. All but the cheapest microphones have a 3-pin XLR male connecto...
MOVING COIL MICROPHONES
zhlédnutí 10KPřed 9 lety
This first video from TechGrounding TV gives you a basic understanding of how a moving coil microphones work. We start from first principles, showing how the audio current is generated by the microphone capsule. We look at a Shure SM58 and discuss the presence peak and it's significance. We discuss communication microphones and dual diaphragm types like the AKG D202. Presented by Joe Driver.

Good video on some of the basics of Phantom Power, although not quite enough to really make people "understand" the entirety of the scheme. For those who don't know, here are just a few more things (not all of the things): - The 48VDC phantom power source is NOT "connected to pins 2 & 3"; if that were true, then pins 2 and 3 would need to be shorted together, which is not the case. - Instead, the 48VDC is individually connected, through resistors, to pins 2 & 3, so rather then being shorted together, those two pins have a pair of resistors in series between them, and the 48V is connected with its (+) side at the juncture of those two resistors, and with its (-) side at circuit ground (pin 1). - It is important for the two resistors to be the same value, or very nearly identical resistance values, and they need to have resistance in fairly narrow range of values; typically, 1% tolerance, metal film resistors are used, as they have accuracy and stability. - The voltmeter sees 0V when connected between pins 2 & 3, because those pins are connected, via resistors, to the same electrical point (the + side of the 48VDC supply), thus they are shorted together from the perspective of a high impedance voltmeter. - A pair of series capacitors are typically used at the cable's receiving end (e.g. a microphone mixer or pre-amp) to isolate pins 2 & 3 from the differential amplifier circuitry; these block the DC voltage on pins 2 & 3, so it is not presented to the diff-amp, although some diff-amp designs might be OK with that fairly high DC voltage, and the identical DC voltages would be rejected as common-mode noise by the amp.

Can I mix regular mic with the phantom on the same mixer??

  • @jamesadams7131

I need phantom power for 2 condenser mics on my drums, but the other 4 mics don't need it. If I turn on phantom power and plug my regular mics into a channel that has phantom power to it, will it ruin my microphone? I believe my mixer has 6 channels that will have phantom power to them when turned on. So if using channels 1 & 2 for the condenser mics, and channels 3-6 for the other, will I cause damage to the mixer, or the mics? I'm just learning how to mic drums, so I don't want to ruin equipment, it's to expensive. Thank you for your help!

Brilliant indeed and I made it, but changed it slightly. I used LEDs I got from China, they have the resistor built in and with insulated leads, so no shorts lol. I also kept and used the rubber grommet, pushed the leds into that and hot glued so they wouldn’t move. Very handy piece of kit. thank you.

Thank you so much for making this clear. Everybody should watch this video. So, once and forever : if you use professional balanced cables, you can run dynamic microphones as well, even when your phantom power (48V) switch is ON. This is the best explanation of what are the pins 1 2 and 3 doing. And where exactly the 48V goes to.

I live in Thailand, and grounding is almost unheard of in the region I'm in. As a result, appliances and computers discharge current on their metal parts. If I use phantom power to power my shotgun condenser mic, do I risk burning out said mic, or will it just behave like my computer and give me a buzz every time I touch (ground) it. Thank you!

I have been searching just about everywhere for a preamp or booster circuit to increase the output level of low output dynamic mics and the preamp will be powered by phantom voltage from the mixer the mics will be connected to. Of course, no phantom voltage will get into the mic. I have found many boosters powered by the 48 volt phantom circuit of the mixer but I don't know how to get the output signal of the booster back into the mixer's XLR input circuit. Please write back to me at computerlen@hotmail.com. Thank you for any help that you can give to me.

Very well said and helpful tips i like the diy gadget that you used in testing the power of the phantom hope i can see a demo on how you build it, and also id like to ask a question, if the phantom power is on at the mixer, is it still safe to put a 1/4 jack playback source on a line input? and also by the way if phantom power is on, will it affect a wireless mic reciever? Thank You so much!
