Thanks for the kind words.
Perfect is the enemy of good!
Amen!
been listening to Phil since 2008! Always insightful
Thanks for the kind words!
With the teams we work with, we always ask for three things before starting and activity. First is a senior business sponsor, second is a clear success criteria (that we put on the front page of whatever the activity is) and finally funding to implement (whatever that may be (not always a new product, often testing / experimenting)). If we don't get all three, we don't engage. When someone comes to us with something that is clearly theatre, we tend to push them in the direction of internal comms or learning if they're adamant they want to do it. And sometimes, it's often about the PR created for the senior leader, but it harms us if we promote it as innovation when it's PR or learning.
Rejection is great if you get that feedback. They're basically telling you how to get it right! Turns employees into actively engaged employees when they know why the idea isn't progressing. Problem is most innovation teams don't give the right feedback - crucial for a successful program. Love the videos Phil!
Thanks for the âfeedbackâ on the videos... đ€đ
First? :) ;) and: wooow , what a story ! incredible. Thanks for sharing this. I read computer history, partook in the early Linux revolution in my early twenties from 1994 and never heard of this - even with a grand uncle who worked with and on computers for the Pentagon in the 70s and was one of the three main creators of the PNG format and the MNG format. I consumed all I could on computing and programming but still never heard of this
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the Video. That was what i needed to hear đ
Glad it was helpful!
I agree with your comments that there are a lot of fakers out there, but as someone who has over 10 years of experience in innovation and new ventures, I disagree with your comment that for innovation to happen, there needs to be expertise in the industry you're innovating in. Quite the opposite-industry expertise typically hinders innovation as those "experts" have built norms and limitations around what is possible. If expertise is required, then how do you explain the Silicon Valley phenomenon of 20-year-old kids disrupting entire markets?
The expertise I was talking to was in âinnovationâ. I agree that cross industry pollination can have a huge impact on.. along with getting out of âgroup thinkâ.
Bold HAIRY! audacious goal

Loved talking to Phil. Few people understand the broad market issues of service providers and consumers better than Phil.
Thanks for coming on the podcast and sharing your expertise with our listeners.

understanding human physiology/health/aging ... and the associated mental issues
If you spend so much time on understanding the problem, isn't what you are going to come up with, not really innovative and just fixing something? I mean, by definition. Sure, what you do to fix the problem might be innovative, but you are still just fixing a problem. What about the things that are not known .. the opportunities?
When I (or Einstein) say âproblemâ, itâs broader than something not working right. A problem could be an unknown need or want that a person isnât aware of. Some would call this an âopportunity.â The iPhone solved a âproblemâ of productivity/ease of use that the market wasnât aware existed or was needed. Is that a âproblemâ or âopportunityâ? They are the sane thing.
I'm not convinced Steve Jobs saw it as a problem. I suspect he saw the tech and saw opportunity with increased productivity and ease of use, possibly listed as benefits. I also think it's important to be unambiguous when talking about innovation. Using the word problem also has negative connotations. Sorry, not a rant .. happy I found your channel. I just don't think we should be scared of using the word opportunity - it's optimistic and expecting everyone to know that when we say problem it could mean opportunity feels like we should just use the word opportunity instead. @@PhilMcKinney
It's great that you codified these gems, Phil! The most critical of these is the law of PATIENCE. How many great ideas are killed midstream because someone up there got anxious and impatient?!
Itâs what some call the âRule of 18â. Any organization can tolerate a âflyerâ on an idea for 18 months (two budget cycles). If there is no impact in 18 months, then the idea/effort gets killed. Innovation takes time. More time than you think. The path to innovation success is littered with unknown. Have patience.
Thanks Phil, Always appreciate your insights. This maybe kind of an off the wall question, but there is a huge amount of innovation going on in biotech. Did you see anything at CES that is leveraging biotech innovation?
Healthcare is a big (and growing) part of the show. Much was on medical devices that consumers can use in their home. For example - digital stethoscope, pocket ultrasound, etc. Many were aimed at supporting virtual dr appointments by being able to integrate with a consumers EMR (electronic medical record). As always, there was a large amount of accessibility tech. For example - next gen hearing aids, mobility devices, etc. As for biotech beyond the above, the target for the show is consumer tech so if it was there, I didnât see it.
What does CES stand for?
Consumer Electronics Show (CES) - the largest trade show in the US (and maybe the world), looking at the technologies and emerging innovations aimed at the consumer market. More info at: www.ces.tech/
Conflicting approach, lack of synergy.
Great points. To me, they point to a lack of innovation leadership on the team. Who is in charge?
Now we have to takeoff since the facilities are not available here
Wow, just discovered your channel. This is so so powerful Phil. Will binge watch all your episodes. Please, how can I join your Podcast channel.

Powerful advice and perspective. Thank you!
Great theme, simple yet very vital. If one doesn't make time for innovation = no innovation priority = no innovation. Great dedication and generosity to have done a podcast for 17 years, Thank you, Phil!
Very useful video. Thanks, Phil for recording and sharing this. I like the FIRE framework. It is simple and very doable.
This is an excellent video. 36 minutes but full of information. Phil, many thanks for your contribution. Your video developed so much clarity about the ideation and its step-by-step process.
I just had a dream with autism and anxiety but I know i worked with school and college and now I can stay at home when I'm 20 and I am so proud

I loved it! I learned a lot! Thank you so much!
Thanks.
Thanks for this. I was wondering about doing virtual brainstorming and was going to check out Jamboard and then you put this together. The content is great too. Many thanks
Glad it was helpful!
I can't believe this was said in 2011 and people still settle for average today. Phil You are my type of person. Education System has Boxed everyone to seek solutions via a "best practice approach" killing any left innovativeness and creativity.
There is a PLATO service that i've launched for retro-computing enthusiasts, with terminals available for almost a dozen computers, so far, with many more planned. More info here: www.irata.online/ :)
Interesting insight!
Killer Innovations Podcast Season 11 Episode 6 12 Tips on Innovation from Elon Musk's Twitter Feed For many innovators, making a splash through social media is the subject of long thought and a lot of trial and error. On the other hand, innovators like Elon Musk tend to have the Midas touch when it comes to combining innovation and social media. For example - on March 30, Elon made a vague announcement via Twitter that Tesla Motors was coming out with a new product, and it wasnât a car. Within hours, Entrepreneur magazine wrote an article encouraging people to guess what the product was about, and re-tweets and favorites both surpassed 3,000. Tesla shares rose in response to the announcement, which gained the attention of CNBC and other news outlets. Innovation Tips Via Twitter It is amazing how much can be learned about an innovatorâs style and thought processes from the confines of Twitter, so Iâve put together my personal list of 12 principles of innovation Elon Musk displays in 140 characters or less. 1) Quality Drives Innovation - One of Muskâs latest projects, the Tesla Gigafactory, garnered several tweets as well as a Flickr post. Batteries for electric cars must be high quality, and that need is driving Tesla to build âthe largest footprint manufacturing facility in the world.â Innovative cars need quality batteries. Quality batteries drive innovative manufacturing: the cycle goes on. 2) Create the Curve - Innovators are always trying to get ahead of the curve, to create new products that people need, before the rest of the market fills the need. For great innovation to occur, you need more than a good imagination and entrepreneurial spirit - you need to engage culture in such a way that the curve naturally follows you. As evidenced by Muskâs recent Tweet - and the buzz it generated - there are ways to use your innovative processes to move ahead of your industry, so that you are no longer trying to find the curve -- you are creating the curve. 3) Relationships are Key to Innovation - On April 6, Elon Musk welcomed a Formula 1 Racer to Tesla motors. Relationships are essential to building innovative companies and products. In the fast-paced environment of the 21st century, no single innovator can know it all. Bringing unique individuals with varying experience onto the innovation team is essential. 4) Just The Right Information - If Elon Musk had announced the actual product name, category, or other essential information in his new product tweet, then the discussion with be if Tesla will be able to fulfill its product goals. Controlling information gives you the ability to control the conversation and attitudes about your innovative products and services, which can affect their success. 5) Keep Your Core Values in Focus - One of Elonâs recent humorous tweets was - âReally should be a rule that oatmeal-raisin cookies canât look too much like choc chip.â The point of this tweet is that food should look like what it is, and innovators are the same way. Your core values and processes, the commitments and passions which make you unique are too important to look like any other innovator. 6) Keep Innovating - Donât be afraid to branch out into unknown territory in the process. Solar City, Space Ships, manufacturing, electronic cars, and more are all developments Elon is currently engaged in. Not only is he continuously innovating, but Tesla Motors is also expanding out of their single product focus (cars) - yet no one is surprised or concerned. Tesla is known for innovating, so the announcement that yet another brand new development was coming brings anticipation and excitement - with almost no worry that heâs getting ahead of himself. 7) Read - Musk reads science fiction books. Although the genre of book is not as important to different industries, the important thing is to read. Read about your industry, about other innovators, and about principles to make your life better, but also about things seemingly unrelated to your work. You never know where inspiration will come from. 8) Have Fun with Your Innovations - An Easter egg, a bit of innocuous code or text added to a program entirely for entertainment, is hidden somewhere in the code of Teslaâs cars. Innovation is serious but should also be fun! 9) Be Involved in Politics - Tesla motors has an innovative direct sales process for their cars, and there are plenty of lobbyists and car dealerships who arenât happy with that. Elon Muskâs Twitter account is full of comments about the companyâs engagement in state politics to ensure that they can stay in business (so far the sales process is banned in 5 states). If your innovations are big enough,- thereâs a good chance youâll run into political and/or legal resistance, - and itâs important to stay involved and engaged. 10) Explore a Little - From Artificial Intelligence to Mammoths, Musk makes a habit of imagining how the world can be a better place through wild leaps in technology, - and also thinking through the consequences of technological innovations. Not everything you think about has to or should be a core competency - you should be constantly expanding your horizons. 11) Keep Yourself Engaged Through Humor - Often, innovative minds are constantly engaged in planning and analyzing and creating. Especially when leading an innovative team, you need to take time to joke about your thought processes, as shown by Elon Muskâs March tweet: âThe rumor that Iâm building a spaceship to get back to my home planet Mars is totally untrue.â As innovators, it takes energy to be engaged all the time, and self-depreciating humor can take the edge off the long hours and stressful team engagements. 12) Donât Capitalize on Everything - Another March tweet informed anyone who is listening that all of SpaceXâs photos are available via a Creative Commons License. This has been further updated to Attribution 2.0 Generic. For innovators, the temptation is often to find a way to make money off of everything of value you bring to the world, but sometimes it is better to focus on the value you bring: itâs better for PR and frees your company and innovative teams to focus on what really matters. My Experience With Elon As someone who has spent time with Elon, I consider him one of the most creative, innovative and high energy persons Iâve ever met. This makes him someone I follow and his twitter feed is one way I glen innovation tips from him. My advice - find someone who you admire and use their social media stream as a way to learn and apply their approach to your efforts. I love how the music for the new Apple iPhone 5S ad sounds VERY similar to that used by my old team for an ad/concept video for the future of "mobile gaming" ... from 2006! Applie iPhone 5S video: Apple - iPhone 5s - TV Ad - Metal Mastered Roku Reward video (below) : Roku Reward - Example of Predicting The Future
How do you know that your new business idea is the one that will be the big success?
This is an old video that was uploaded by never made public. Enjoy ...
Revealing The Future With Video Predicting the future is not for the faint of heart. It can be tricky to know what and when something is going to happen. Itâs not enough to just have an opinion of what the future holds but you have to have a way to show the future (via vision video) so others can see and respond to it in their own way. This video in particular (Roku's Reward) was influential because it showed an actual credible use-case (outdoor location based gaming) with a level of production quality and narrative that helped people see the experience, not the technology. More background on Roku at: bit.ly/183a9yK #innovation #futuretech
Sometimes its hard to convince the leadership team to take the risk. You would hope with a concept of "what could be" (video) combined with a road map of great products (webOS), you could get it done ... but no such luck.
@privatepile762 - I just went through your entire CZcams channel and some of your religious views and other important views are now known to me.
