    Hi Jonathan, should Magento open source not have a future, I am ready to move to *Shopware* . They're very similar. What's your take on that, do you think is a good idea?

    • @developerconnection
      @developerconnection Před 2 lety

      I actually talked about Shopware a little while back - but the short version is, it's not quite a flexible as Magento (but close), and I do like it as a framework. Right now it's looking like the future of Magento Open Source is actually quite safe with the plan being to ultimately hand it off to the Magento Association. So as long as Adobe don't change their mind, I think Open Source will be around for a good while yet. developerconnection.co.uk/blog/shopware-first-look

    Thanks for the video. I have two questions, first one: how long did it take you to do the downgrade, including all research, MySQL scripts and code changes. Second, did you also did a magento version upgrade after you did the downgrade. Or do you expect any issues there?

    • @developerconnection
      @developerconnection Před 2 lety

      Good questions. Looking back at logged time for the downgrade, it sits at around 412 hours work, including all research, creating the downgrade process, testing multiple times in staging environments with equivalent dummy data to production, actually running the production downgrade, and then any follow up work when customer services started to use the downgraded system. Virtually all of the follow up work was related to the third party extensions replacing commerce functionality around returns and companies, with quite a bit of that just being differences in usage within admin, adding an extra bit of info here, moving this field there, that kind of thing, but nothing critical. On the day of actually downgrading production, there were many external systems involved as well so it wasn't just Magento, or just me involved, but I would say that including database backup before running against production in case of a need to roll back, the actual downgrade, and some initial testing afterwards it probably took something like 3 - 4 hours just for the Magento side with maybe 1 - 1.5 hours of that running the SQL scripts. Since then, yes Open Source has been upgraded including upgrades with database changes, and also things like applying security patches - no issues found (and none anticipated). A large chunk of the time creating the downgrade process was analysing DB changes between Commerce and Open Source, and building SQL to convert the DB fully to Open Source. A big requirement of the client was that post downgrade the install, in terms of both code and database structure and content, was identical to Open Source so Adobe would have no basis to say the install still needed a Commerce license if they did chose to investigate. During testing, I ran the downgrade SQL many time and also closely inspected the DB afterwards comparing to the clean Open Source DB, and it was identical. Bear in mind that if you also want to downgrade, you will need to spend some good time testing and likely customising the process yourself to make sure you are happy before running it against any production systems.

    it's a damn shame what Adobe has done to Magento. I say we start a new mantra and take back the platform that the community built.

    • @developerconnection
      @developerconnection Před 2 lety

      Adobe is certainly introducing sweeping changes - I guess we'll see what the future actually brings but I am concerned for the future of Commerce. Open Source is looking brighter though!

    Hi Jon, I don't think small/medium business can afford to pay 100K a year to maintain an e-commerce website. Additionally, there are hundred thousands Magento 2 websites out there needing maintenance. Switching to Adobe Commerce could be painful. If Adobe thinks of cutting ties with the community, I believe they're shooting in their foot. Community made Magento a success, and people over there are very well qualified to maintain the platform with or without Adobe.

    • @developerconnection
      @developerconnection Před 2 lety

      Toitally agree Davide, and many of your points I make in my video. If the day does come when Magento Open Source is no more it will be a terrible shame, but similarly to you, I hope that Adobe will allow the community to take ownership of Open Source edition if there plan is to retire the product.
