I built a OOO style steel string acoustic about 25 years ago under the tutelage of luthier Tom Knatt. This was the method we used. In 25 years the neck hasn’t required removal but if it ever does it will be a simple procedure.

Folks wanna overtighten the tuner peg nuts so they stay tight. Instead, use a bit of blue threadlock.

Have you any comments/suggestions for preventing the double-thickness part of the looped string from coming over the crest of the bridge- or does that make any difference at all?

I have heard all these guys play. All great players. I have only met one of these gentlemen and visited with them. I met Doyle Dykes a couple of years ago and had a nice visit. Doyle is not only one of the best guitar player around, he is, more importantly, a great human being. Greta Christian man. 🙏

when you went to the buffing stage did you add anything to that area or does the buffing literally make it all shiny dark black again? polish?

Robbie, do you recommend bending only one side at a time, or will it work to bend both sides and the binding at the same time as we did with the other bender?

In many ways, this is the best angle to watch Tommy play from. It shows just how gifted he his and how much he has worked to improve his God-given abilities. First, his hands are HUGE ! He seldom puts his thumb behind the neck to reach a string or execute a chord shape. Secondly, this also means that his hands are very strong, as he doesn't need the thumb's leverage. Third, this shows how very nimble his fingers are, not needing the thumb to give him room to navigate the fretboard. 🤯🤯🤯

Are the slots the same size as the main part of the string or the thicker wound end near the ball?

Question if I may: how many piece back wood you consider to be the maximum? 3 only? 4 or more? (I thought I read somewhere that Taylor’s Pallet guitars were multiple piece)?

Hey awesome tips thanks Robert! I have another question about bracing. If you go past 90 degs on the X brace will that open it up? How much should you go past if so? Or If you go under and how much you should go under 90 Degs?

Important to point out that if you turn around your slotted bridge pins, even for the treble strings, the bridge itself should be slotted (see your other video from today). If not, as the string comes to tension, the wraps securing the ball to the string are going to chew up your bridge plate.

Your buffing compounds can remove 1000 grit scratches? I’ve started with 1500 as my most course paper in the past and ultimately been left with fine scratches I can see, but I’m buffing with a drill pad.

to much echo play more misic can not understand the mumble in the reverb echo

I like the traditional guitar much more. For my ears the double top sounds a bit harsh and crispi...a very "modern" sound. I like the warmth and woodyness of the traditional guitar, what is called the "romantic" sound like Segovia.

My 2 cents opinion. This kind of guitars should be tried out by classical guitarists. Playing them like this does not make sense. What can you hear?

Robbie, do you pre-soak your wet paper? The autobody guys all swear by putting your papers in water overnight before sanding! One of those "high dollar" painters told me he adds a few drops of glycerin to his sanding water. He claims it acts as a lubricant and lets the paper glide easier. Here's my tip on sandpaper. Grab a scrap of plush pile carpet. Use it to brush all the kernels and buildup. You'll find your papers last longer!

Great video. I recently got a 1964 kono classical guitar from japan. I has a fretboard crack, which upon several months of proper humidification has closed (no gap). I see a lot of people repairing these cracks with superglue and sawdust, as a void filler kinda like what's shown here. I get that. I have good experience fixing soundboard cracks with hot hide glue and love how it vanishes as it pulls joints together. I am considering repairing this fretboard crack with the hot hide glue, as it has closed nicely upon proper humidity (it doesn't need filler); rather than using the more popular superglue. Is there any reason I shouldn't use hot hide glue on a fretboard crack?

Which Royal-Lac do you recommend, regular or post-catalyzed? I heard the the latter cures very quickly but is very hard to buff . Is your method still valid sanding with the same grit sequences but dry instead of wet or should I use different grits?

What about a very small peel spot on the fretboard side? The finish only no chip. Would you use the same process? Would be afraid sanding would peel/remove the rest of the finish?

Hi Obrien, saudações do Brasil, you mentioned that it was starting to crack and that you suspected the reason was the application of a very heavy layer of varnish. Can the application of "generous" layers cause the varnish to crack? Best regards.

This is not a valid test. You used this checking finish and then added an additional checking technique without a control sample. We do not know to what extent the finish by itself would have checked and how much or how little that the freezing stage added to the test.
