My interpretation of the Bill Evans classic. Still working on it! (For those of you who saw it before and commented my apologies for removing it! Had some issues and editing in any meaningful way is not really possible)

In the spirit of "Workshop", I present this little unfinished woodshed ditty I was working a while back on Bill Evans' classic "Periscope". So here's the thing, it's deceptively hard. Yes, it's in C but that's precisely the reason I find it hard. It's a "sea of C" so to speak and ALOT of repeated turnarounds on II-V & III-VI. In other words, I find it easy to miss in C because they are similar ...

I record for fun on my Yamaha P115 on some of my Fav Jazz Standards. This one is in the standard key of Eb. Was trying to press for some different elements: Changed harmony on the opening chord and some Bud Powell-like rising II-V chord substitutions in the middle. Enjoy!

Doug and I have played together only a few times but it was really fun and great for me (1994 in Copenhagen and then 1996 and 1997 in New York). This was recorded live in Birdland Oct 1996. My mother whom was to pass December of that year had a sudden remission and was in the audience. Really special night. This was the first tune of the evening. A few little missteps here and there but I'm sur...

This is an homage to my wonderful dog, BJ Raney who left us June 2, 2013. We miss him desparately, every day. It's so hard to forget him because he was part of the fabric of our daily lives. But the best we can do for him and us is to share our grief and show the world what a special fella he was with his beautful pictures and videos and have you enjoy the song he inspired ine to write. When I had finished music school, I went to my first jam session run by a wonderful trumpet player in Baldwin- Mel. Davis. I was real nervous. I was invited up and called the tune “Four”. I had my arrangement down. After Mel told me “ you play guitar pretty well, but you now need to learn how to - play music”. Best advice I ever got. Jim and Doug- beautiful melodies on their guitars. ❤❤
The man with the sweetest Jazzguitar tone ever - even though he always used a pick - he still managed to get the best tone of all. Respect also for how he approached music, the subconcious part and even when he got in deep where music 'comes from', totally agree with his vision.
Jimmy immediately projects wisdom and kidness. This would benefit any young musician,of any genre or style.
Great!
"In the last analysis it 's about ears." Pointing to his ear. Yes. No one is thinking "Mother, may I??" relating to scales or modes. Music flies by too fast for that BS.
Amazing creativity.
Beautiful... splendid lines...so wholesome ❤❤❤
Wow!
One of rarest few who can play jazz guitar with real clarity..... Doug also
Live at bradley...2 cd is probably the epitome of jazz guitar across the entire guitar spectrum.... speechless music in there....
Yeah. He was untouchable at that point (1974-1976) Everyone was coming to hear him. I mean EVERYONE - a who's who of guitarists and non-guitarists - Not crazy about the recording per se (on a couple of levels) still a great document regardless of how it came about
@@raneyjr thanks for the info.. since it was a amateur tape recording, there's some problems...but hats off to the person to recorded the music....very far sighted human
@@clearbrain far sighted human.. not exactly. I would say opportunistic if you know the details of how that came about. And also how he profited from it when explicitly he was asked what his intentions were. The end result, you clearbrain being able to hear it I guess comes down the current debate about artists rights about being recorded vs. the "want to hear for free" aspect of the listening public. It's as much a technology thing as a generation gap thing.
@@raneyjr I see.... really surprised to know this...I thought the guy gave the recording freely....
@@clearbrain my recollection is that the recording was release to Fresh Sound Records which is a notorius storefont operation that gets recordings from different places without giving credit to the original artists A vulture capitalist so to speak. They thrive on it being to much trouble. but in the end.. point is moot. We're here discussing. you've heard it. like it and are talking to the artist's son lol. have a good one
I'm 70yrs old a grew up learning the old tradition of singing the solos/ lines of Lenny Tristano, Charlie Parker etc. Chuck Wayne once asked me during my lesson "Why don't you play something I never heard before". I replied How do I do That? You probably heard everthing already" He said "Why don"t you play something YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE". Then he said Yes learn tunes, solos and lines. Throw away the muscle memory licks and just play. Let the improvising take you"
Unbelievable guitarist both jimmy and Doug
Beautiful ❤❤❤
Wonderfully played! My favorite recording of this is on Intermodulation, Bill’s duo with Jim Hall. Thanks for posting this, Jon.
Hey thanks!

GOD BLESS DOUG RANEY AND HIS FATHER JIMMY - FOREVER !
In Paris France we have this radio station called FIP that offers lots of modern jazz tunes from Barney Kessel, Charlie Christian, Django Reinhart, George Benson and many others giving us that beautiful music. 👍
A Master jazz pianist!❤
😊thanks pnojazz

woah, that was cool!
Miss This Friend.
yes its hard to accept but.. we soldier on with the best memories of him. Thanks Bob
Doug is my greatest inspirer of the jazz language. Thank you for all 😢
So fascinating ))🥲🤪
I remember Jimmy being asked if you should copy other people's solos. His response was something, to this day I still tell my students. "It's okay to learn other people's solos, that's how you learn the language, but just steal the good stuff! Don't waste your time on the lousy parts of the solo." I totally agree!
I miss him to this day. It’s great to see and hear him immortalized in this interview. He was a brilliant, timeless, human being who understood so much with music as his vehicle.
Thanks for this Emotional moment Love your playing both ❤
Thanks Jean
Wonderful ❤
Incredible
you have the gift.
Thanks Philip
Mr BEBOP---Jimmy was great.
They say great music is discovered more than created. I suspect that's what happened with Raney and also with Charlie Parker. Not that it was an accident exactly, (obviously much work went into it) but the musical discovery resulted from just trying for better playing and writing as opposed to a conscious effort to 'be different.' Thus ultimately the conversation is about musical ideas, more so than this or that particular instrument that one plays.
Very good point Jon. I think the best artists really have that union between striving for something they hear in their head but at the same time understanding that they are pushed towards that naturally if they are patient, analytical and a sensitive listener to themselves and others.
Great playing!
Thanks Jimmy And Jamey, Bird Lives
Interesting how he mentions Glenn Gould while demonstrating Bud Powells ideas! Special people
Both Jimmy and Doug were exquisite-out of this world musicians.
Master player as his father.
This sounds fantastic. Love it.

Love Jimmy Raney!! His choice of notes and his ability was incredible!! Thank you for this!
❤
All these guys are incredible! Excellent rhythm section and on top these two virtuosos! I wish I had guitar teachers like them. There is so much we can learn from them. Thanks a lot for sharing! Love it! Cheers DimiZ
Well, I am glad to find you here on CZcams! May I ask? How are you related to Jimmy? Are you a relative of Jimmy? Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing! Channel is subscribed! Love it! Cheers DimiZ
Son. Figured it was apparent.. :)
The late Stanley Crouch's "Kansas City Lightning," which is the first volume of a projected two volume biography, describes at some length how Parker studied and practiced as a young man. It provides a great deal of information about his early development. Bird was also a person who read a great deal and had many interests.
THey just dont swing like this anymore or its very rare. Love it Thank You Raney family!
Thanks for listening. Best, Jon
I wonder who the other guitarist is?
the late thorgeir stubo
I`m an admirer and Fan of Jimmy Raney, especially in the years he was joining Stan Getz in musical ventures..... God Bless both of them!!!
