Ria Coast
A ria is a coastal inlet formed by the partial submergence of an unglaciated river valley. It is a drowned river valley that remains open to the sea.
Rias are formed by either a rise in sea level (eustatic) or a sinking of land (isostatic) that causes the flooding of river valleys. They have a branch-like appearance and often contain islands that are summits of partly submerged hills.
Rias are present all along the Galician coast in Spain, where the term originated. They are also found in other parts of Europe, such as Portugal, France, England, Ireland.
Rias are often used as natural harbors, as they provide sheltered waters for ships and boats.
Rias are also rich in biodiversity, as they support various marine and terrestrial ecosystems, such as mangroves, salt marshes, coral reefs, and forests.
Some famous rias around the world are:
Milford Sound in New Zealand
Sydney Harbour in Australia
San Francisco Bay in the United States
Ría de Arousa in Spain
Ría de Aveiro in Portugal
Tokyo Bay in Japan
Chesapeake Bay in the United States
Kotor Bay in Montenegro.
These are just a few examples of rias that have been shaped by tectonic movements, sea level changes, and erosion over time.
Rias are often scenic and rich in biodiversity, attracting tourism and fishing activities.
The Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, is the deepest ria in the Mediterranean Sea and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
