How do can you use this test for a swimmer who only has access to a 25m pool?
I want to try this test but we only have a 25m pool. Can the same be applied ?
Absolutely - just try to standardise the distance of the wall push-off at the turn. Still complete the test as 50m intervals. Let us know how you get on?
I came back to swimming in the last couple of years; for some reason at school they taught us to swim, but never taught us the breathing, so I set myself that challenge, and am making progress. I want to say a heartfelt thank you for all of your informative, and crucially, very interesting videos - they have really inspired me, and are helping me on my path to becoming a better swimmer!
Wow! Thanks Helen - you've just made my day with your kind words!
Like the toe touching idea, easy cue to remember, I'll give it a try.
Great. Let us know if it works?
Looks good. Is it okay to enter the water with the fingers in a downward direction? I often do that to avoid tilting my wrist upwards. Especially my left hand because of very tight shoulders ( and I tore my left rotator cuff a couple of years ago so obviously I’m very careful and limited in my reach). Thanks

Thank you Paul for your tips. In a month I will be 59 and these advices will help me to keep swimming ever week
Thanks for your support Carlos!
What’s the background song called when he started swimming ? Is it In CapCut?
Please sir put the subtitles in Arabic and thank you😊
13:22 🤣🤣🤣
This cross kick actually was my natural mode, have to really make a mental switch going to non cross
Thanks Paul👍
So right arm and right leg kick at the same time? And vice versa. I need this explaining with crayons.
No, when you kick with left you pull back your right arm and vice versa
Poweful kick
OMG, I have had a Tempo trainer sat in my bag for years not working. It is the older model and has never worked. Defo, trying this trick this evening.
Let me know if you manage to resurrect it???
How great. I will try to improve my stroke rates from now on. Thank you.
Good information - I fixed my crossover but couldn't figure out my scissor kick when I breathed. Now I get it. At 5'5", I gotta keep that stroke rate moving.
beautiful swimming
Thank you for Advice
You're welcome 😊
I ONLY EVER breath left, even if I've been told it's not correct 😅 In fact, I swim exactly like the lady in this video. Thanks for speaking my language!!
Great video. I will be trying this out, as swim ability and fitness increases, how often would you recommend retesting to see if the optimal stoke rate will improve?
Great. Let us know how you get on?
Pardon for being slow, but after watching this video I still don't know how to reduce drag. Is the answer to breath to the other side?
Excellent stuff. How do we apply the ramp test findings to training and swimming longer distances. Should we try to stick with the sweet spot stroke rate? Does it change for threshold pace or steady swim? I find it gives me optimum speed and efficiency over 50m but still takes a lot more energy than swimming slower with a slower stroke rate which I can maintain for a 1hour swim. Is there a conversion for longer distances or for those who are unfit?
Recommendation is to get that sweet spot defined (and the test will likely show two spots per the video) and then work around those numbers between your different distances 👍👍
I do 7km slow jog plus 2km swim every other day for almost two months now… I feel incredibly good! Intend to keep going…
Great to hear it Stewart! Well done!
Wind was pathetic
Apologies Steven, I didn't have the greatest of mic set-ups at the time, but if you want to hear it a little more clearly after having run it through some sound clean-up software since, you might get a better understanding of what Bud was saying - here's the link: czcams.com/video/2Gu_0J5cbL4/video.htmlsi=MjdqWP_eqgV3ZXHP&t=961 - let me know if this helps?
Very good at 27th stroke he started breathing from his left. He has good stamina and perfect swimming technique. 🙏
Glad you liked it. Super inspiring
Excellent video as with them all. This is so relevant to what I do with my left hand when I am breathing and cant breath to left side at all so far.
Thanks for the feedback - keep working at it mate!
Oh man, I saw another 2-beat kick in which the kick is with the same side of your arm catch up. Which one is the proper way, criss cross or same side?
This is definitely the correct way ☺
Same side is better allows for body rotation
I’m a self taught swimmer and I do a Two Beat kick with crazy glide and distance per stroke, and I kick on the same side, I still haven’t experimented with cross cross yet because I’m just so naturally gravitated towards same side kick, it just works for me although I do feel like my body isn’t straight the entire time but I still swim like a beast
I am not an elite swimmer. I am 76 and do roughly 6000m per week. I've be watching video after video month after month to learn how to improve my swimming and find that there's a lot of confusion out there in what the best thing to do to improve things. But after many months of trial and error, I found that no matter what technique I was concentrating on, the one thing I learned to do was to just relax, don't get uptight, and just breathe. After that I found that breathing controls everything and if i don't breathe well, I won't swim well. Even while I am swimming I have to concentrate of my breathing....Awesome insight from you and thanks so much!
Did a CSS test today and both 400 & 200 times resulted in the same pace of 1:58 and the online calculator said this isn't possible.
This might help: www.swimsmooth.com/free-resources/2014/08/strange-css-results-and-gaming-system.html?rq=strange%20results
I would say that you either a) didn't take enough rest between the 400 and 200, or your pacing on the 400 was "off" and fatigued you too much to crack out a good 200. Hope that makes sense? Some extreme diesel engines can be very close to the EXACT same, but it the calculation hasn't worked it must be because your 200 is slightly slower than the 400. Theoretically this can't happen as you must have swum 200 within the 400 quicker than your 200 TT
@@swimsmooth Thanks. Think the result says Im ok for triathlon swimming but not very fast.
I am the 100th to "like" this video. I am extremely keen to be able to swim long distances in freestyle.
Thanks - what did you find resonated for you the most?
I'm always looking for pool drills (got a 25m pool only) for the open water guys. That drill is a goodie. So simple. Definably going to use that. Thank you - and got any more :-)
Certainly! What would help you the most?
I don't understand the timing of strokes. 0.1 = 1/10 of a sec between strokes?
Time between one stroke finishing and the other starting 👍
Is 6-beat kick in the smooth of swimming sustainable for a long distance? I found it so tiring. Prefer the 2BK for laps swimming.
Very much a personal preference thing. We’ve done a lot of videos lately on the 2-beat kick and its suitability for distance freestyle swimming, so you’re on the right path!
I always thought that the catch part of the pull was the wrist flex you do before you start your pull..... As for how far back you pull, that seems to vary on whether you are sprinting or doing distance. With the 50 meter sprint, I am thinking that stroke rate is the most important part, and how far back you pull is secondary. With distances, it is the opposite where you want maximum pull length, and a slower stroke rate. I do get better endorphin rushes from sprints than I do from distances. Maybe that is because the distances take longer and it isn't as much of a peak and drop off...
Alligator eyes....🔝🔝
Yes exactly!
Thanks Paul. Your chat and your first demo seemed to differ sightly in that you described lifting your head to sight, then turning to breathe. But on the demo you were sighting, then putting your head back down into the water and breathing on the next stroke?
I wouldn’t necessarily sight-then-breathe on every stroke - sometimes just sighting will be required.
Thank you very much for all this awesome information.
Our pleasure!
Really helpful, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Gracias por el video😊
Muchos gracias!
Paul. Thank you very much for these videos, especially about swimming freestyle and getting my breathing correct. I started swimming last Aug (Aged 64) with breaststroke (If you could call it that). I then began freestyle this February after watching your videos. From the outset, I managed to get my breathing right (Although I still have sinky legs - but getting better) and now swim 400m in 9:00 mins. I have also just completed 134 laps (3.1 km) freestyle and wasn't even breathing hard when I finished. Breathing correctly is the FIRST thing every swimmer should learn. Thanks for these videos - greatly appreciated.
This is incredible Ian! You've just made my Easter! Well done on that 3.1k!
I'll take "Things that never happened" re the coach talking about high elbows above the water in your workshop. :-)
Hahaha!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
It's an excellent refresher, thanks Paul!
Glad it was helpful!
Great tips, thanks!
You bet!
in full sleeve suit, my arm entry feels very weird and too high. I don't feel this at all with sleeveless WS

Should cost £5 but they charge up to £70 - absolute rip off and feels like a charismas cracket toy.
