I've got one just like this, also from Pico Canyon in CA. The tag on this states that it's the oldest steam engine owned by the museum..These were used on the first commercial oil field in California in the 1870s. This one, others, and mine were rescued in 1974 by Greg Johnson and friends. Much more information about the Pico oilfields and some stunning 1877 photos can be found on this website ...
Holt engine test

Holt engine at the AGSEM show in Vista, CA. Didn't get any info on this, but it may be similar to a Cat 60 engine... before the merger with Best. The operators had it hooked up via belt and driveshaft to a dyno. It was MUCH louder than it sounds here!

Clara turned 17 yesterday! Came back from a run to find the turkeys in the middle of the road again. She doesn't care and is happy to share the road.

I first saw these hanging around when the young birds were about as big as skinny chickens. The biggest now is as big as mom; five young birds managed to grow up without getting eaten by coyotes. My three dogs and three cats will walk right around them, everyone ignoring everyone else. I can walk up to within 15-20 feet of them and they seem to have decided the front yard around the house is a ...

Good to talk to you at Coolspring! Now I have another bunch of sites to explore!
Nice Lathe nice chuck and setup. Much fun. I'd like to have a lathe like that
reminds me of the cartoon tugboat willey the way hes bouncing up and down
Little Toot's muscles.
Wanna see this old engine start?ok, hang on, let me just turn a 100 knobs and levers
Man, how often do you have to lube the exposed moving parts on that thing? Eeef.....no wonder the engineer had a job....
Tek kelime harika pir çuval puday yi yesinler
What an awesome motor, thank you for sharing this 👍. Built to last that's for sure
We had a WWI shipyard in Madisonville, Louisiana on the Tchefunta River. In 1927 the steam plant blew up and burned. They installed this same Type Atlas engine to run the huge line shaft workshop. My grandfather worked there and helped. My dad became general superintendent in the late 50’s-60s. Around 1968 that engine had run 40 years, every day and night. He parked a huge Electric motor next to it and retired the engine. It was a beautiful installation with brass handrails etc. When they switched that electric motor on, the belt let out a squeal you could hear all over town.
If this trailer's a-rockin', don't come a-knockin'
Engine specs Bore/stroke: Large/Huge Max rpm: Slow Torque: Yes
Wouldn't it scare away the fish ?
Now all you need is a tugboat to put it in.⛴⚓️
Very shaky
Not enough O's in smooth to describe this engine
Pure raw torque.
Talk about three handfuls of controls, it must a while to remember which did what. Preet neat old engine.
I see how it made the tug boat go it waddle like a duck !
Qué hermosura! Me encanta la vida silvestre. Eso sólo se puede ver en Estados Unidos. En México nadie los dejaría libres.
Music for the mechanical minded.
Good Video!
from what i've seen about these engines, the horsepower numbers are low, but the torque numbers are very high.
beautiful engine
What a grand old engine. Makes you appreciate what we have now.
Any more information on this machine? We have some similar, if not identical, in our museum collection located in San Jose, California.
Valve timings out. Looks like it's fallen at some point
i see you have a suzuki for a starter motor..
considiring that that this engine is mounted on a trailer w shocks and not a sturdy platform , geee.
smooth like pudding
I like these old engines slove the puzzle and it will start every time
will this fit in my xj
what do you think an old engine like that would be worth approximately ?
Backup generator material. Get a LOT of car alternators and a couple of massive belts and a few car batteries and there.
My Dad worked on tug boats from 1919 to 1946.He often talked about the 3 cyl. Atlas.
Now I know where Chitty Chitty Bang Bang got it's name !
good
Nice original setup, is that flywheel of a McCormick model M engine looks like some I have. I love to listen to steam engines running slow even on air. Nice Video.
Nice engine. Thanks for posting.
Is it two or four stroke?
you won't find any modern day engine running 90 years from now they might run slow but they are still running
If I'm not mistaken that's a direct reversing engine. In other words to get reverse you have to shut it down, throw some levers and start it up backwards. Captains quickly learned to angle into the docks in case it didn't start back up...
Is this the engine of the Suzuki Samurai who's standing behind the engine?
Love to see him set a glass of water on that thing
Max RPM is like 50?
Thank goodness for crazy Gearheads
I love that enormous gauge at a about shoulder height.
teleia moysiki
that trailer is kind of sketchy
Three cyl engines with 120 degree crankshafts have rocking forces acting longitudinally and in a vertical up-and-down motion. The engine as it is placed demonstrates this perfectly. This is the reason why most modern vehicles with 3 throw crankshafts are fitted with a balance shaft or shafts.
