I'm with you on the not liking fuzz, but i feel like I should like it because so many players I listen to use it. And also with you on the volume and tone on guitar and infinite tones - annoying 😅 especially on a gig. All tone controls are removed from guitars(!) I have followed your council on this one and will try this type of fuzz circuit 😊 I was hoping to get the band of gypsies type sound but something not too sensitive to guitar pickups, power, or buffers.... Maybe its impossible but well see when I try it arrives 🤔

I've been playing the Fender 358 shape since I started playing 20 years ago. As a beginner with small fingers, they felt right. Started with thins because it made it easier for me to play "fast" with the pick bending at my will. Over time, moved to the mediums, and then been playing heavy's the last 4-5 years. Started outgrowing this when I realized my tone always sounded a bit thin and bright for my tastes. Started looking for an "extra heavy" before realizing they don't make them. At a loss, I came across the Jazz III, and then the Eric Johnson Jazz III. Picked up a small pack of the EJ's because if they're good enough or him, they're good enough for me, and obviously they must be better than the "standard" version. Played those for 6 months or so and then realized that they made me sound better. 20 years later and now realizing how much of an impact a pick can have on your tone. One thing I didn't like about the EJ. though, was that I noticed I was missing notes when tremolo picking, realizing it wasn't as pointy as my trusty old Fender 358's. Entered the Jazz Pit on Dunlop's website and found all these different variations. Don't see myself coming out of it now. So far, after trying several iterations, I'm between the 1.14mm Pitchblack Tortex, the Stiffo, and the Ultex. Each have their pros and cons, and I feel the ones I enjoy playing the most are, ironically, in reverse order of the ones I think sound the best. Of course, none sound bad, but it's amazing how different they sound. Time will tell which I stick with but enjoyed hearing someone else talk about these with such dedication haha.

I only use the eric johnson red jazz 3 pick because that pick is still made with the old formula they're softer. I don't like the new red jazz 3 pick they're just a little too stiff for my liking. Give them a try. You might like them more.

I like the Jazz I, it has a more rounded tip, almost like the round side of a 351 pick, and is easier for strumming chords and for rhythm work, while still having all the benefits of the Jazz III. The Jazz II I think has a less round tip, I think it is more like the tip of a 351, I need to get my hands on some to see. I also use the Max Grip Jazz III Carbon Fiber, and they have a slightly rounded tip, just a little of a material removed vs a regular Jazz III.

I never understood how or why all the shred guru guys would swear by the stubbies. You know the very small fat and sharp purple stubbies. I used to try these picks over and over and over for many years and just couldnt figure it out. I later changed my picking technique entirely. Misha Mansoor from periphery has this same story as me how he had to change his picking technique. We both used to hold the pick flat with 3 fingers and when we picked, the pick edge would come into contact with the string at a perfect 90 degree angle, making it a very hard aggressive pluck, but also making it very challenging to get across the strings because every string hit would feel like fighting or forcing your way through the string with the pick. Rather later in life people realize there is essentially 1 basic uniform technique for holding your pick, all the pros hold it this way for many styles of guitar, Idk about flat pickers they are a different story. but everyone holds thier pick this 1 way I have found, paul gilbert, yngwie, everyone. holds it this way. pinched between pointer and thumb, creating a pick slanted angle so that when the pick comes into contact with the string, the sharp edge doesnt interfere but rather is slices or cuts through. creating this angle, or pick slant, is why these stubbies were made and you cannot use these picks unless you pack slant. I use the 1.5 white tortex jazz3 now and its the best thing ive ever experienced and has made me level up best bang for buck investment of my time ive ever done to get better at guitar. it was like maybe 6 months after using this pick, with the new pick slanting proper technique, and i was a born again entirely different and MUCH better guitarist. So, if you are not understanding how to use these picks, it is because you are not pick slanting. the pick should cut, or scrape through, there is very little actual contact with the string. if the pick feels like its just bouncing off the string or being stopped, or is too difficult, it is because you are picking wrong.

When I began using a Dunlop Jazz III, I didn't think I had found "the" pick. I had. I typically use a Jazz III shape if not the original nylon pick for some playing but prefer nylon Jazz IIIs for playing with others. I greatly prefer Dunlop Jazz III picks. I use garbage picks for rote, boring repetitive runs at home. For proper playing, I use a good pick and wear out the garbage for solo practicing at home.

As your 103rd subscriber, I'd like to congratulate you on hitting over 100 subs! As a new guitarist researching what should be my first pedal, found this video informative while entertaining. Looking forward to going through your back videos and watching future videos.

I have used (2) jazz3 picks exclusively for practice and all gigs. They are from an older batch and the only 2 left. I have some newer ones from 5 years ago but they don't seem to have the hardness or feel that my 2 favorite picks have. Maybe just my imagination but has anyone else experienced this?

I personally haven't noticed a difference in the standard Dunlop Jazz III picks I've purchased and used over the years, but it's not crazy that there may be some varience. Eric Johnson swore by older Jazz IIIs that he held onto that they eventually used as a model for his signature Jazz III pick, and those feel a lot different to me compared to the current production Jazz IIIs as far as feel is concerned.

Thanks for this video, I wasn't familiar with the Red Llama before stumbling across the Chupacabra, but did lots of back and forth and eventually settled on the Chupacabra with the Tres Hombres inspired enclosure. They do seem a little different to me and I prefer the Chupacabra out of the two based off this video, but I might have to pick up one of the smalls Red Llama used and see how I like it. Very cool tones and playing!

Glad it helped! I do dig the Tres Hombres enclosure for the Chupacabra, that’s a very sharp looking pedal. 😎
