Thanks for mentioning that you can add a bit paint to the clear wax to make your own tinted wax. I’m thinking maybe I could do this with white wax as well, to make the waxed effect «beachy» but not as light as with white wax. Or maybe I’m on the wrong track here. I’ve painted my cupboard with a mix of 2 blue/green tones, and am happy with the color, but some places we’ve been unfortunate with some uneaven coating. I think using a colored wax might camouflage this issue.

I love love love this. Thank you. Please may I ask your advice. I have taken the wall back to the plaster. Would I need to paint the wall first i.e white before I do the distressed paint? I want the wall Turquoise distressed, s I was thinking to paint it Turquoise forst and then use 2 different Turquoises in the distressed paint. Would this work? many thanks

Can you add something to the glaze so it doesn't dry so quickly? I'm doing a design on a wall surface and I need to be able to work it without it drying for quite awhile

What should be done with old textbooks from 20 years ago...no one can use them. Or old encyclopedias in the time of google? I am going to make a stacked book table...with casters on the bottom, the books made to look really old and worn... and titles of banned books..like to Kill a Mockingbird. A nice large tray for the top I think. All books that would be in a landfill....

WARNING: I ruined my chalk paint project and you could too. I painted my furniture with Annie Sloan old white and it looked amazing! Then I added the Annie Sloan old wax clear as instructed by all the videos and I have wet looking blotchy streaks everywhere! Now I feel bitter because I wasted my energy and time with a ruined project. It has to be stated that these CZcamsrs teaching you these techniques and even Annie Sloan herself are professionals. Compare your Do it yourself table to theirs and you will be blown away. Applying wax is a skill and it’s not for everyone. I hate to bring so much negativity to such a positive community but this really isn’t for everyone. Test yourself. Buy a boring block of wood from Home Depot and apply 2 coats of Chalk paint and Top coat clear wax and if your results doesn’t come out good then this is not for you nor is any painting project that requires a top coat. Your better off painting a wall.

A glaze is defined as a color superimposed over another color. That of course is the short version... Pearl essence is a type of pigment. Mixed with a glaze medium of many types it is then a glaze and not before. As a base over the myriad of primers "pearl" is the foundation upon which various glazes are applied. The paste form is much all the same stuff so far as the waterbourne versions. Also available are alkyd base, solvent type lacquer base and catalyzed versions. The latter versions being the foundations for what are called "Candy Colors" or sometimes "Kandy Kolors" by one popular supplier. The earliest versions of the Candy effect "pearl" base were organic..The pearl look was finely ground herring scales suspended in nitrocellulose lacquer. ( Sounds fishy no? ) Very early versions are still around including some examples from Barris Kustoms post WWII. Kudos to the set dresser. a bit of overkill but that's show biz.

If budgetary issues present. Regular furniture wax works a treat. Furniture wax can be tinted with the myriad of artists oils. Reduction (thinning) can be done two ways. Warming the wax and or adding few drops of paint thinner. Raw or stripped wood can also be waxed with furniture wax that has been tinted. One enhancement to waxes over raw wood is a drop or two of turpentine. This also works as does the paint thinner on beeswax finishes. Clear wax or more specifically, Microcrystalline wax can be purchsed by the pound. The wax is used by museums across the country. Any wax can also be bulked up with additions of the same fillers and fractions of paints and coatings including calcium carbonate and titanium Oxide all available by weight. A well known method of using unused shoe wax is still a viable "finish" Any of the waxes save the liquid and aerosols if a waxed look is to be a final finish over "chalk paint" especially if no prime coat has been applied and most especially if the prep is inadequate of not done at all. Chalk paint is at best even though charming due to it's non reflective look, it is a fragile finish for any substrate that will be subjected to wear, handling or misuse.

Cant beleieve my comment is the first one over here. Well, im looking for this effect to one of my wallsa, and your work is the best one out there. But I have a couple of questions, I dont know if you use two colours (because I only see one in the video). Or you use one dar colour (regular) and the other one light (cause of mixing it with the scumble glaze). Do you recommend me which brand for the scumble glaze acrylic? Thanks so much and keep up the good work.

    •  Před 2 lety

Hi Yen, hope you are well... Thanks for the compliment ;-) Yes, I used 2 colours one dark and one light. Mix them in separate containers with the scumble-glaze. (you will need more of tje lighter colour (dark is just for accent) I used a South African brand from my local paint shop, but any water based glaze will work. Kind regards, Joe
