Connecting Kids to Nature: Creating and Maintaining School Gardens
Engaging kids to learn about native plants is vital to our planet’s future. Two speakers, contributors to the recently published NPSNJ’s “Native Plant School Guide,” will delve into the nuts and bolts of establishing native plant gardens in school gardens that not only serve as food and habitat for pollinators and birds but also provide valuable learning opportunities.
Our discussion will focus on a carefully chosen palette of plants: beautiful, easy-to-grow, and that bloom in spring and fall when students are in school.
We’ll explore the benefits of school gardens as well as the challenges associated with creating green spaces in schools and other public spaces.
Sarah Paulsen and Dena Corbin, integral members of the Essex Chapter team behind the School Guide, bring their extensive experience in creating school gardens to the conversation.

Rainscaping Practices: Gardening with Purpose with Scott Woodbury
zhlédnutí 475Před 7 měsíci
For decades, stormwater has been ditched and piped to get rainwater away from buildings and properties quickly. The downside is that all that additional rainwater ends up in nearby creeks where the increased volume and velocity erode banks and add pollutants to the natural environment. Rainscaping practices like rain gardens are designed to hold water on the property longer, to encourage water ...

Great video. I have been thinking about how to get communities involved in the “native plant movement”. My children aren’t yet school age but it got me thinking about the future. I wonder if more presentations like this could be done with people who have started initiatives in other ways, like in public parks or with their towns. If anyone knows of any that is lol

Always thought we should give Manhattan back to the indigenous people. The Hudson river used to be the caviar capital of the world before Russia. A Scuba diver told me he seen body parts in the Hudson river near an Albany Hospital. The human wastes from the Manhattan skyscrapers used to go directly into hudson bay. NYC hospital medical wastes were found on NJ shores. We need another Pete Seeger.

Toadshade Wildflower Farm (located in NJ) is worth checking out for seeds and/or plants for a few of these listed. They are very involved in conservation efforts and the preservation and propagation of native plants. If anyone happens to have a native plant that isn't currently offered growing wild on their own private property, you may reach out to them to offer seed for them to continue propagating so others may grow them as well.

The town is Lakehurst and the issue keeps getting worse per year and no one speaks up about it. I'm sure the bats would thrive in these conditions.

There is a specialist night flying native bee that uses evening primrose , too. The amazing thing is that somehow primrose “hears” pollinators ( senses the vibrations of their wings) when they are nearby and pumps 30% more sugar into its nectar to lure them in for better chance of pollination! How cool is that?! Amazing what’s happening right under our noses and above our heads. I have heard the bats on the bee detectors. It’s so cool. We drove around different areas , mainly rural ones, hung it out the door and listened to the chatter. It was a project of a local nature society here in SW Ohio. Bats are very chatty- even when they’re just hanging out they’re checking out what’s around them with the chittering. This was a great presentation. Glad I found it!
