Used oil is a highly environmentally hazardous substance and must not enter the ground or drains. Just one liter of mineral oil can potentially contaminate up to 1,000,000 liters of groundwater. Please respect nature and dont destroy it.

Like others, I am concerned about safety, esp for the animals (incl wildlife). I worry about Lampe and Gwin touching it with their feet. I also worry about Lampe inhaling it and getting nauseous and smelling it so much more than we can. Another problem is the disposal of the oil-soaked wood. On the path it will begin to rot from underneath and you will rip out a board here and there. Burning it will cause the oil to make toxic smoke. I have a feeling there is a good reason why this oil is not typically used for such purposes. Already I was concerned that you were making an open fire during those hot, dry days. Stay safe!! :-)

Brucke-san, Please be carefull with fire and your smoking near the oil soaked wood. Oil is combustable and so is wood. Together they could create a fire hazard. Kyoskete ne! Please buy a fire estinguisher to be safe. I would not soak any wood or wooden structure close to your cabin.
