Antonio's tresspasses were not even worthy of death penalty. Hold him accountable, humiliate him publicly, make him go bankrupt if that'll serve you in any meaningful way, but carve out his heart? Dang, that's some dark sht Shylock... That's what Portia points out to in court. Without mercy, a dark, shrivelled, hard heart will cause destruction of its bearer.
