We are a family who transplanted from California to North Idaho in 2018 and haven’t looked back. I’m a white collar man who is blue collar at heart. My sweet wife is a stay at home, home schooling mom with a green thumb. We’re learning and teaching garden construction and development, wood working, gardening, quilting, and marriage and family wisdom. We are building our lives here both literally and figuratively. We welcome you to look into our lives and maybe learn from our success and our failures.

I wanted to try my hand at creating something with Barnwood. I realized after purchasing the wood from a local dealer that I didn’t have enough to create a table and since this was my first go with Barnwood, I didn’t want to try to match it with wood from a different barn. Probably would’ve been OK but like I said, this is my first time playing with Barnwood. The project was more about familiarizing myself with the material than it was creating something super expensive. I think it came out OK but I don’t know what it should be. Should it be a coffee table or a sitting bench for an entrance to a house or cabin? Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts

Great video and nice job on the stairs. I’m just wondering however why you didn’t use pressure treated wood other than for your posts?
The steps are pressure treated. The stringers are not. The stringers are up off the ground and never have any moisture stay on them for long so I figured maintaining them with linseed oil would be sufficient. It’s been nearly 3 years and still super solid. Thanks for your comments.

Really great video! Thanks so much for posting. We have a hillside garden here in the UK and need a few sets of steps. This has inspired me to get on with it. You helper is the best! He's such a great help and so lucky to have you showing him the ropes, along with a practical education too. Great team work 👍 Where in north Idaho are you based? We have friends in Sandpoint that we have visited a few times.

Not sure where to draw the initial line. I only saw you do it once at 2:15 ish at the bottom step, but then at 3:12 it looks like it’s from the top step?? Is the line drawn initially along the posts???
No, the line at 3:12 is the only reference line that is needed and is from the bottom not the top. Hope this helps. If not, let me know👍🏼
You can kind of see where I started the line on the board when looking at the video at 3:12. Just make that first horizontal level line at the lowest point that you can and go from there
All the work that you do to set up the stringer boards, and level them at the post is to get that one reference line at the bottom that you see at the 2:15 minute mark. Once you have that reference line, then you can extrapolate the rest of the steps with the jig that I show you.

Does the ground not freeze in North Idaho? Won't the frost heave push those posts out concrete and all?
It has been almost 3 years and it is still solid as a rock👍🏼 It hasn’t shifted a centimeter
What zone are you in? Im considering this method in zone 5. But im planning to winter them on the ground in straw for insulation.
We are in growing zone 6, I believe

You are gonna need a mini split. I went through a similar situation. I thought an electric heater would be enough for my 24x36 pole barn. I had spray foam insulation like yours. I ended up buying Mr.Cool DIY mini split rated for the square footage of my shop and it heats it up in about 20 min easy. The electric bill hardly went up as well.
Thanks for that information. I considered a mini split with two stations. One for my man cave and one for the shop. I realize now as well that the electricity bill doesn’t like it either.😁

Oh, I would say that things aren’t always perfect😁 I definitely have to contend with the video game systems at times.
I plan on doing exactly this. Not as long thank God. Couple things I noticed. Use self tapping exterior torx screws. Will save you the drilling. The other thing was that sheared off screw. I would have taken that out with vice grips and reused the hole. Great job, saving this for my job!

that first breaker you showed would have given you 0 volts since both poles are on the same 120v phase
I don’t think those screws you have into the posts will be strong enough over time
Yeah, maybe not. If it looks like it starts to fail, I can always use more or different ones. It’s been a couple years now, and the stairs are solid as a rock.

For me? Yes. It’s a good question. I used linseed oil on the stringers because it was a more affordable way for me to do it. At the time lumber was really expensive and I knew that those stringers were not gonna be in the moisture or snow, per se. It’s been a few years and they have held up beautifully. No issues whatsoever. I would suggest that if they are going to be exposed to a lot of moisture that you do use pressure treated wood though. Thanks a lot for your question. It’s a good one.
Also, if you build it using these plans, I’d appreciate a picture sent my way of the finished work. I may do a follow up video later on and show some of the construction that people have done based on this video. So if you have pictures, send them my way. I’d appreciate it.
