    What I think we're saying here is that the commonly argued belief, including by myself, that 275-400hp is the power sweet spot for the road is not necessarily the case. In a relatively low weight package with good inherent handling characteristics, 200-250hp is plenty if you're primarily looking to tackle your average B road. That said, to remove the "if", IMO 300hp is still required. So, when thinking of value for money, IMO the Toyota GR86 at 32,580 brand new represents incredible value for money, and this road trip proves Toyota's philosophy 100% correct. I wouldn't buy one, because I am somewhat of a brand snob, and when I think of what you can buy in the used market for that money I'd be shopping 911 997.2 or 981 Cayman/Boxster S, even a 981 Cayman/Boxster 2.7 manual. Similarly, the GR Yaris is also an incredible offering, but the 2nd gen car is likely to be circa 40k, and for that you can get into a 911 991.1. Of course, I'm being a bit unfair by comparing used with new, and of course you can pick up a depreciated GR86 or 1st gen GR Yaris in the used market for much less. All are great for between a quarter and half of what you'll pay for a Cayman/Boxster GTS 4.0, but of course they just don't suit almost all occasions like the GTS 4.0 does, so there's that. *Anyway, based on the revelations in this video, I'm going to suggest the best value used sports car in the UK market today is the Boxster 987.2 base (2.9), and that it should be the default when looking to buy a weekend sports car.* While you can pay more than 20k, I've also seen good examples with moderate miles for 12k, and I'd say the average price is about 16k. My suggestion is based on being able to get yourself a good 60-80k mile example for 12-14k. That price overlaps the higher end of 987.1 pricing and is circa 10k less than you'll pay for a 981 with moderate miles. *Why the 987.2 base (2.9) Boxster?* 1) All the advantages of the Boxster over the Cayman as outlined in this video. 2) The updated exterior of the 987 over the 986, and the more modern and higher quality interior. 3) The option for PDK instead of the old torque-converter Tiptronic, if you want or need an auto -- although you must make sure it's been serviced. 4) The advantage that all of the engine concerns you have when buying a 986/987.1 are addressed -- although it's not 100%, but neither is any car 100% bullet proof, other than maybe some Toyotas. 5) The particular advantage with the 2.9 is that it's port injected unlike the 3.4 S that is direct injection. That means you don't have to deal with the carbon build up that you would have to deal with if you bought an S with more than 70k miles on the clock. 5a) Moreover, it sounds less like a vacuum cleaner. Actually it sounds very good. 6) To top it all off, there's 35 more horsepower (252) than the 217hp the 2.7 in the 986 has. 7) Lastly, just like 997.2s, 987.2s are keeping their values because they are relatively rare, given they were produced during the financial crisis and relatively few were sold, also given that they are much more worry free than the .1s, and also that like 997.2s they are the last Porsches to have hydraulic steering. Of course, if you want a daily, as these are 13-15 years old at this point, based on technology much older than that, and given that if you want an auto this is the first gen of the PDK with higher likelihood of failure, you would be better off stepping up to a 981. But as a weekender, I can't think of a better option for the money. Can you?

      Thanks for all your thoughts and views. I love to read and listen to all perspectives as there’s simply no right answer. My view has always been that you don’t need a big (!) budget to have fast and fun entertainment on the road. If any car proves that it’s my mk1 NA MX5 (although good ones are starting to creep up). This specific roadtrip has proven how good the base (2.7) Boxster is on your typical twisty, undulating British b-road. I was really pushing on at times in the STI and the little Boxster was always there unless the road kicked upwards and opened into a modest straight. I’d also argue it’s more fun to be going slower and having fun than at high speeds. Think of cars like the original S1 Elise 1.8 with its 118bhp. Fantastic fun, if a little extreme for some! To agree best value car is very difficult because you need a set budget. Before I bought my R8 V8 MT I looked at 997.2 911’s amongst others and personally I think the R8 is an absolute joy to drive if your budget is around £40k, but with it comes risk associated with the potential for some very big maintenance bills albeit the engine and gearbox are very strong. There are many very good alternatives too. As for your suggestion of the Boxster 987.2 2.9 Base as the sweet spot, for sure it has to be an option, but as is always the case, it comes down to so many factors, too long for this chat (coupe, convertible, no. seats/doors, hatch/saloon, age, etc). Great chat 👍🏻

      @@FastandFun For less money, I think I'd be tempted in the direction of something like your son's special edition Golf GTi. In fact, I'd be very interested in your thoughts on how the Golf would compare with the Impreza on a road trip like this.

      @@FastandFun That, too, will be interesting.

  • @nigel.w
    @nigel.w Před 5 dny

    I argue that the Cayman is the best value here. Actually 20 grand cheaper than an Emira before options, and better residuals. Also, a proper thoroughbred engine instead of a supercharged Camry engine. 30 grand cheaper than a base 911, but standard performance features closer to a 911 S or even GTS. The Cayman GTS is also very well spec'd as standard for a Porsche. Typical options are less than 10k, whereas typical options on a base 911 are now closer to 20k if you want Sport Chrono, which is standard on the Cayman GTS. Now, I'm a 911 guy, but the Cayman/Boxster GTS is, comparatively speaking, phenomenal value for money. And, although the styling, including the now dated Cayman/Boxster interior, is as stated "conservative" and doesn't have the wow factor of the Emira, it's still a phenomenal package. There is simply no rival in its price range, period. Moreover, apart from a JDM meet or a classic meet, you can rock up in the Cayman, literally anywhere, from the supermarket, to a business meeting, a fancy restaurant, the opera, etc. You can daily it. It's a great weekend toy. You can track it and be very competitive. You can rock up to a Porsche meet, obviously, and the GTS 4.0 gets respect, and the GTS 4.0 wouldn't be kicked out of a supercar meet, either. It is incredible value for money. So, I humbly suggest that in the value for money category, you got it very wrong, even though the others are much cheaper, because they're much older. Furthermore, as good a value as that Boxster represents, when it needs an engine rebuild, as it probably will in the near future, given its mileage, it would be difficult to keep costs below 10k, and you could easily spend 15k. I don't know that much about Subaru maintenance costs, but I know they can be very expensive. Sure, the Cayman is going to suffer depreciation over time to a much greater degree, compared to already depreciated modern classics, and the modern classics are probably going to slowly rise in value. And, of course it's difficult to compare apples with oranges, but if you take away the advantages and disadvantages based on age, and compare them is the market, against their competitors, as you tried to do, the fact is that the Cayman also stands up as a realistic option as an only car choice in the market as a whole, rather than just in niche markets and based on affordability. Let's face it, only someone constrained by budget would have the Impreza STI or 986 Boxster 2.7 as their daily or only car. So, yes, I think the Cayman GTS 4.0 ticks so many boxes that the other two simply can't, and in the wider context I think could be argued as the best value car on the market today.

    • @FastandFun
      @FastandFun Před 5 dny

      The best value category was always going to be difficult. We were really trying to compare apples with oranges with bananas hence why we tried to compare for value against their rivals. I loved so much about the Cayman, the 4.0 F6 is a joy, rapid PDK gear changes, effortless progress and a beautiful interior with a degree of practicality too. The big disappointment for me was the steering. It was bullet sharp and precise but very digital with very artificial steering feel, hence my previous reference to the similarities to driving a simulator. I’m also not keen on the rear (visual aspects) of the car either. The Lotus Emira on the other hand is an absolutely stunning car from all angles (I know it’s very subjective) and although I’ve never driven one, I just don’t expect the steering to be as artificial as the Cayman (although i didn’t expect the cayman to feel as it did - modern digital cars!). And give or take a few pounds there’s not a lot in the new buy price of either, once you’ve spec ‘d the cars to a similar level. Great debate though and love having these discussions. Keep them coming 👍🏻

    • @nigel.w
      @nigel.w Před 5 dny

      @@FastandFun Sadly, the Cayman suffers from the same electronic steering issues as most modern cars, although it is one of the best electronic systems. However, the Emira's steering is one of its main positives beyond its looks. As far as price, I think you'll find the difference in price is significant. I just spec'd an Emira V6 First Ed and a Cayman GTS 4.0. The Emira came out at just over 90k. And I note the Emira's starting price has recently dropped significantly. I can't remember exactly, but last time I spec'd one the base price was in the 90s. It depends what you consider an equivalent spec for the Cayman. The Cayman has so many more options. To my taste, I'd be at just under 85k, but I think most people would spec 3-5 grand less than me, and many would spec one with only 2-3 grand in options. But if you spec'd the same total value options on both, the Cayman would be more than 10k cheaper! Even after the Emira's price drop, the Cayman's starting price is more than 10k cheaper. To me, at least, that's significant... ...Versus the Emira, you get the Cayman and your Range Rover.

      No problem at all 👍. Although I live in Aberdeenshire these days, I’m from up in NE Sutherland so know the area north of Inverness pretty well. If I think of any other recommendations I’ll let you know 👍

    I have one of these, 2005. S-line. Graphite gray. Been my daily driver for 18 years. Still runs like a top. I love the exhaust note. I love how the DSG gives me 30 mpg ( the high torque VR6 means that in D the TT shifts into 6th gear at 35 mph. It’s optimized to lower your revs as much as possible.) I also love that the 3.2 has a timing Chain, rather than a belt. Those wheels are unique to the 3.2 Quattro DSG as well. I love that everything inside that LOOKS like metal actually IS aluminum. Not chromed plastic. At 19 years old they still look new. Yours is missing the cargo net in the boot, which I love to keep smaller loads from flinging about on turns. The rear seats are NOT unusable. I have had kids back there, and even folded up a full size person in a pinch. But their primary use is that, here in the States, that rear seat cuts your insurance premiums by about 35% Two seaters cost more to insure. Up until recently, Its been the lowest cost of ownership of any car I’ve had. Had ONE $40 brake light switch go bad in 16 years of driving. But mine has been parked outdoors all this time, so it’s just starting to show some sun damage to the paint on the spoiler and roof gutter trim. And I recently had the headliner re-done. Other than that, I replaced the fuel pump just last year, and recently had to have the AC compressor fixed. And I replaced the instrument cluster over the dreaded red screen issue. The engine and transmission have been bulletproof. The best thing about the 3.2 is that the combo of the DSG never letting you exceed redline nor lug the engine protects both the transmission and the engine from driver exuberance. Additionally, they are a lot harder to mod, for lack of room under the hood, and won’t let you run over redline, so the tuners and dragsters tend to go for the cheaper 1.8L turbo manuals. That means that if you buy a used 3.2 DSG you are more likely to get a car that has not been run hard and worn out so bad. And the DSG is the best transmission ever devised. It’s faster and more responsive than any manual. You can run it in manual shift mode and it still won’t let you hurt the engine, or you can run it in automatic mode and not wear yourself out in bumper to bumper traffic. In Sport mode it will delay shifting until redline as long as you’re accelerating, and downshift early for compression braking, or to keep the engine in its power band for more aggressive driving. And even in fuel saving Drive mode, you can instantly tap the shift paddles to flip to manual control at any time and it will shift back to auto mode if you don’t tap the paddles again for a 20 seconds or so. It never misses a shift, Never shifts early or late, never grinds a gear or mis-clutches. Its stock exhaust note in Drive is understated and elegant, but present. And in Sport mode it’s an impressive low throated growl that is still not so loud as to be annoying to other folks on the road. It’s the most elegant touring sport ever made and a design tour de force. As to the cup holders… At first I thought they were in an awkward spot. But I rather quickly got used to them being behind my elbow. I love them now. They put the cup Out of the way and yet I have no issue reaching back to get the drink, or putting the drink back without looking. It may be easier for me with a US car because I am using my dominant Right hand, whereas you Brit’s are fumbling about with your left.

      That’s great to know although we may not go up onto the north coast as our preference is to head across to the west coast.

      Probably nothing, but if the struts is slightly too long you can rotate it and it will shorten or extend its length slightly.

    There have been Range Rover's in my family longer than I have been here. In all those cars, early classics, late classics, P38's L322s there has genuinely not been a bad one. Never needed recovering from the side of the road. Yes there have been some large bills etc. given it is a big complex heavy car. These cars are not the problem, its the previous owners and what they have avoided doing maintenance wise.

    Nice review! I've actually just purchased a Fiesta ST 150 a couple days ago. I had a Clio 182 in the past and a RS200 and they were both soo much fun! The only downside to the Clio for me was mine weren't very reliable... Ball joints made of chocolate , £600-£800 cambelt/dephaser replacement, Gearbox and electrical issues.. . I decided to go for an ST150 as the parts are just so much cheaper and easier to find! Cheaper to insure , Cheaper to run and also it's on a timing chain can't really go wrong! I think ford did a good thing on winding the power back for reliability and costs IMO. A fabia VRS was also on my list.. But trying to find one of those standard and not covered in rust is just impossible. Also not to mention majority have been to the moon and back. I still think the ST150 although being in 3rd place and down on power is the best bang for buck you can get... The Clio and Fab are great cars but for £3000 hard to find a good example nowadays.
