Hi, Thank you for taking time to leave an encouraging reply. I'm glad you've enjoyed some of the posts!

I agree it is important to live life free of the fear of judgment, and the Bible can be used to scare people if it's in the wrong hands. I'm one of the people who need new ways to engage with the religious texts they grew up with in order to be free from the harmful ways those texts have been used in their lives. Instead of running away from it which might be the right thing for some, I've decided to find a new way to frame what I'm reading. You can see my method on my website if you haven't looked already.

I totally agree with you in feeling outrage at the ways that organized religion has hurt people. I'm actually one of those people and since I interpret texts as my profession I've decided to overcome some of that by engaging with the Bible. My method might not be helpful for some. Well I don't think that is true. Sometimes people were sentenced to death. What examples are you thinking about? Based on my observations so far, what you have in the Bible is a divine being who is responsible to uphold justice, so what happens even if someone who has earned it is spared a death sentence is that people reap what they sow. That is what happened to King David--he murdered an innocent person after raping that person's wife and then he lied to everyone about it, looking like the benevolent king who married and elevated the grieving widow to the status of queen. It was the perfect cover up. For that reason, even though God accepted David's repentance and did not take David's life He told him that the sword would not depart from his house. God took the side of the murdered victim. In fact, God follows His own rules so well that He took on human flesh and died as an innocent to pay the price for the guilt of all humankind so that there would be a loophole--justice could be satisfied and death for us could be reversed.

I read this today that somewhat explains God's attitude towards life, death, and justice. Here God is speaking to the ancient Kingdom of Israel who had a specific agreement between themselves and God: Ezekiel 18: 25-32 25 “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? 26 If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die. 27 But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life. 28 Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die. 29 Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust? 30 “Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. 31 Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel? 32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!

The main thing I want to validate here is that you are making a great point about not worshipping a God who has different rules for Himself than He has for everybody else. That is fundamentally an unjust ruler who should NOT be worshipped. You may have run into authority figures like that. I know I have and sometimes those people claim that God is on their side because they are the authority. I really hope that is not where your questions are coming from but if so I am so sorry you have suffered like that. In response to your examples, you've mentioned killing and getting angry. I don't think it is wrong to kill if you are a soldier in a war for example or if someone is threatening your life and will not stop and you have to defend yourself. I don't think it is wrong to get angry, especially when you see something bad happening or if somebody hurts you. The anger tells you something important--that something is wrong and needs to be fixed or halted. The context of death and anger and the way these things are carried out matters when deciding if an action is right or wrong. The worldwide flood story is about a world of people who down to the last person was bent on evil. Noah was the only person who was operating from a position of justice towards himself and others. So when God, acting as Judge, finally passed sentence on wrongdoing after hundreds of years of patience and at least 100 years of warning everybody what was going to happen if they didn't start doing right by each other, everybody died. Jesus was angry that people were turning the house of God into a place of commercial profit. The market-makers were representing God as profiting off of the people's innocence. He disrupted the commerce happening.

Hi, I just saw this comment so I'm sorry it has taken a long time to hear back. My project is mostly for people who have been hurt is some way by their Christian religious upbringing like I was. One way to try to heal is to shut the door against the whole thing and sometimes that is the right thing. In my case, I decided to engage with the ancient text in a new way so I could see it with fresh eyes. If you haven't looked at my website, you can see the journalling method there and the background for the project.

I hope you have checked out the website so you understand the concept this video fits into. This part of the exercise isn't attempting to put something in its historical context--that would be a different exercise that is very important but is being done extremely well by so many others. The project is for myself and for other people who have been hurt by toxic religious environments/teachings.

Well, this is a new angle I have to admit. I'm a few months down the line and I've observed from the readings that good in the Bible comes from the Holy Spirit. People can manifest good in the world and overcome evil when they have this spirit which is a gift from God that we can ask for. I'm sorry I didn't see your comment earlier and that it took a long time for me to respond.

It's hard for me to understand the rationale of a human being ruling over an equal human being. But other people in other countries think that makes perfect sense and maybe I can learn something even if I don't adopt their point of view. Parents: they made me, until I'm an adult providing for myself, they can tell me what to do. Other people don't have the same right to the same degree. If my parents don't believe that a Higher Power requires them to treat their children with justice and will hold them accountable, and they don't have a strong moral compass from somewhere else, bad news.They can tell me to kill myself and teach me that I have to obey them. Personally, that's why I think it is important to have the concept of outside accountability for authority figures. Please see Confession 88 where I talk about this a little bit more.

So if I understand you correctly, your moral compass is based on how you feel about the person who is committing an act. Judgement of the act itself is purely based on the person who is committing it. In other words: you only have an issue with a certain act if its done by the wrong authority figure. So the most diabolical act could be just fine in your worldview if its done by a person you like. How's that for morality. You cant wrap your head around humans subjugating other people. That is a no no for you. But god subjugating lesser forms of life (humans) is totally reasonable or even morally good and just in your eyes. How theists get the gull to say "without god we have no morality" all the while forgetting that their god committed genocide multiple times in the book, blows my mind. Its like all the bad stuff their god did can be dismissed or even justified, but had a human done the same thing (think Hitler) we'd call that person a monster. I just find it hard to understand that humans are capable of performing mental gymnastics on this grand scale. To be blind to their own blatant hypocrisy @@JennifersConfessionBooth

A few years ago I read Winston Churchill's History of the English Speaking Peoples and gained a lot of appreciation for how the British political system developed and operates. Engaging with the broad idea of sovereignty in the reading for day 87 challenged me to examine my own attitudes. I hope that is what came across.

I hope you didn't watch this video in isolation. The follow-up confession is important. I'm not sure what experiences are behind your comment, but for me, the videos are an exercise in healthy detachment. There was a time that I couldn't read the Bible much at all because I was too upset. I think a lot of people have been hurt by religious contexts. Anyway, in order to engage with some of my own difficult questions, I look at the text in the first place as a piece of literature and ask what I can find out about the main character--that is the first half of the method.
