NuCLear. Nu CLEAR. Get it right.
First of I want to congratulate you on the 3rd anniversary of the podcast! I've been listen and watching this since not that long ago but knew about you before finding the podcast, through the Before and Afters articles and Hugo's streams on Nuke. I really enjoy watching you guys talk because I feel like i'm part of these conversations, the shared opinions and some experiences. In this one specially with Hugo talking about video clubes being the norm and Blockbuster coming on the late 90's, and also the behind the scenes documentaries being one of the biggest reasons to be working in this industry. For me it was the behind the fxs of Empire Strikes Back, where it showed the history behind the FXs and the magic in movies and in particular children making movies with clay or household items. It meant not only that movies were made, but also that I could be making them. Then comes the reality of living in a third world country and the complications of having no budget, but we make what we can with what we have jajaja. Thank you guys for all your work!
GUYS THIS IS LONGER THAN THE MOVIE :D
But it’s so worth it! Haha
I blame Hugo's rant on the plotholes...
@@beforesmag SPEED: Average movie at best: 5 out of 5! haha
haha, I watched it on VHS, 200% pirate version and I loved it! And I watched it several times. Borrow from the near videoteka...and we had to returned the VHSs' rewinded...
27:25 this is probably one of the best uses of blue screen I've seen in a movie! The lighting and shadows on Keanu match up perfectly with the background footage, which is of the incredible elevator shaft model! This movie utilized so many great filming techniques like rear projection, matte paintings, miniatures, visual effects, and dangerous stunt work which makes it one of the best action movies ever made! Thanks for this super in-depth and informative podcast about this amazing movie!!
Happy Anniversary guys!....so glad Ian got those wedges, pretty sure I remember hearing that episode of FXGuide podcast where he was told they had been thrown out!
Weeeee ^^ I love these retro episodes. Looking at petabytes worth of fluid sims is great and all, but these 20 to 30 year old films in my experience are much closer to the everyday VFX work and hold far more ideas on how to solve a shot than massive LED volumes and the latest and greatest in performance capture. What do you think about doing an episode on how the effects in a somewhat similar environment developed over the years? Thinking of the Batman films from 1989 till today or the Harry Potter series Great podcast, thank you so much for sharing these insights! Greetings from Berlin
A very cool idea
Congratulations! I love your show.
Thank you so much!
The extras back then were an investment in your audience and not know it.
That is so true! Even the other day I was watching the new 4K Blu-ray of Star Wars Episode 1 and they removed the old documentaries and behind-the-scenes and replaced them with some generic marking BS. I had to buy the old DVD to have access to the old and more complete BTS. The old ones even included full breakdowns of VFX with the desktop screen and software being shown. The DVDs extra were, as still is, the best source of information.
I was 21. It was new to us. Sandra was the hottie next door. It was new it was entertaining.
Dolls for males. Not action figures. Grown Man. Deal with it. Yo Joe!!! COBRA!! Deceptions ATTACK!! Autobots!! Transform and rollout! Not that I saw Robotech or anything else like that when it first aired.
Congratulations on year 3 of the podcast! Thank you for educating and entertaining us through the podcast 😊
Thanks so much! Glad you like our podcast. We try our best. Thank you
ThankYou !!!
One thing movie streaming services should add are the menu and the available videos including behind the scenes.
thanks
It is inspiring to see how you can use Nuke to create those kinds of visuals, thanks Hugo for sharing the process behind
Thanks so much for saying that. Means a lot to me. This project was very special to me. Cheers
This is such an inspiring film for VFX, I work as a comper in London and I would love to know how to get to work on set for something like this!! it's such good work!
love your podcast as always. Can’t wait for you guys to talk about Mad Max Fury Road & Furiosa 😍😍
It’s coming, we promise. We are just waiting for some breakdowns and behind the scenes to come out first. Thanks for watching
Never Screen, Only Plus. (Screen is only useful for combining mattes). If you find that screen looks best, I recommend fiddling with other areas of your comp so that Plus looks best.
I PUT A BACKGROUND IMAGE AND A CAR ,THN THE CAR IS LIKE TRANSPARENT ON THE BACKGROUND,HATS I DO TO SOLVE IT,I AM BEGINER IN NUKE.CAN YOU HELP ME?
Irridescence is the word you were looking for at 4:38
Cats is still the only film I’ve heard about so far where the VFX studios were doing “Midnightlies” review sessions.
Love the experts: You need to render local??? Dude did you ever worked on a movie in a team of 200-400 artist? Did you ever heard about online Renderfarm? You confusing more then helping people....
great comp technique!!
I think it's simply the film industry attempting to wallpaper over sh*t directors by creating a strawman in the form of fictional backlash of CGI use. I don't see any issue with CGI. I have an issue with the lying about it's use... there's no need for that.
The benchmark test would be to replicate the shots in their promo.
Ok, so this software only works on the shots they provide? Shouldn't it work on any shot? At least that was what they said on the website!
@@HugosDesk Of course it should work on any shot but it would be interesting to see if it actually did produce the results they showcased or if there was something else going on in there, such as full production workflows, which of course, would mean they were completely fraudulent claims. Nice review btw, you just saved me 100's of dollars.
@@hdtvnz Thanks. A lot will surely happen now since they were just bought by Autodesk, so I'm assuming it will find its way into Maya somehow!
this gets more relevant by the day
I’m afraid to say that you are right! Thanks for watching
thank you for this video Hugo 1)when would you use gain vs multiply if they essentially do the same thing? 2) how would control the fall-off of using lift (like a toe)? I'm coming from a photoshop background so I would set points in the curve to limit the area the lift affects. I guess I could do this in the colorlookup node but I'm curious what the workflow would be for something like the grade node? would you essentially have to use lift in combination with gamma/multiply to preserve the upper values? Or would you just use colorcorrect for that?
As a former graphic designer, that intermission video with the client over the shoulder is causing me physical discomfort.
thanks
Welcome
Have you thought about doing procedural displacement with noise instead of using stock footage?
Using the stock footage was by design. We wanted to use other footage to displace this footage. This was part of the conceptual ideas behind this Video Art.
"Some of the best shots ARE simple comps." -Hugo, I couldn't have said it better myself.
I need a T shirt with that slogan @hugodesk 😄
This would be cool if it were an interactive art piece where you and your friends could dance in front of a motion capture device and have these filters applied and projected on a screen. As a prerecorded performance, it loses something. I strongly advise the dance group to do a live performance with this enhancement and then have volunteers from the audience try it out. Encouraging more people to dance through visual art an animation!!
Awesome make more art tutorials
cool
I worked on this movie in the VFX division at MPC and I can tell you I always call it the Vietnam of VFX. Whoever worked on it has scars for life to the point some people would refuse to even chat about it even today. The worse experience of my career… so far.
ohh why is it the Vietnam of VFX? 😮
I was wondering if the butthole thing would be mentioned. Originally I heard one person was tasked with painting them all out of the shots but apparently not true. I also heard that it was under tail around the butt area that the UV's ended and rendered like they had buttholes. Butt, apparently that got fixed early in development. Would love to know the actual story though.
Man, I love this podcast.
Thanks so much for saying that! We love doing it too!
No disrespect to Oren and Greg, who did a great job, but credit should also go to the colourist and colour scientist(s) who definitely helped create the look of the film.

Perfect ❤❤
Worked as a compositor at Mill Film for around 6 months on Cats. You guys are pretty spot-on with conditions, grid warps and compositing challenges. Very rough project, all over the place, worst show I worked on in 10 years. On the plus side, it's quite the project to namedrop in a discussion to make heads turn lol. Great episode!
watch the video by @Sideways about the music. it's a good analisys
Horrendous is accurate
I worked on this film. Was brought in as a roto Anim artist my first day in a training program. The dancing never once did tposes or anything to allow syncing. So all the dancing had to be manually rotod in 3d frame by frame. By people who never did it before lol. 1 week of training 😅😢
3 months before it came out lol
The more details I hear the more it sounds like Tom Hooper was running this project with 0 regard for the knowledge of experts in their field and no respect for pipelines and the fundemental tricks of the trade in CGI. He ended up making it harder for the CG artists and technicians than it had to be. It's a decades old technology. He was walking on the shoulders of giants yet acting like they were pioneering the tech. Reminds me of how during Les Mis he went against the fundementals of music and wanted the orchestra to play to the actors' singing (instead of the other way around) whom he encouraged to just change tempo at whim in the puruit of a "dynamic" performance. I recall the musical director/composer/conductor(?) losing his temper over it all in the behind the scenes footage. Hooper comes across as super arrogant and pretentious.
I think its important to know how much pain and suffering went into this film from the side of VFX workers. This for many of us was our entry into the industry. This film was made abusing a LOT of junior artists, unpaid overtime, 12 hour days, many artists on visas were abruptly let go after cats wrapped. Mill Film halved its employee count after this show. Many experienced and non-experienced artists wanted to quit and did quit the industry. Technicolor is a crooked company.
