This channel is about our rides on our mountain and gravel bike, both e assist and manual, and me on my small motorbike exploring various trails and back roads in New Zealand. Sometimes with friends sometimes not. Don't expect big jumps, crashes etc, because that's not what this channel is about. Expect lovely roads and trails and some awesome scenery.

This is our last ride from Kaitieke, which is in the Ruapehu District, North Island, New Zealand. We're doing a 52km loop ride taking Kawautahi Rd to get us there and Oio Rd to bring us back. It's another superb ride as they all, have been in this area. A huge thanks to Liz and Ross for organising this time away. Thanks for watching. This is ride 2 of the 3 rides we did from the Kaitieke Hall. Kaiteiki is in North Island of New Zealand in the Raupehu District. This is a stunning ride with the Kaitieke hill, Fishers Track and seeing a pair of Blue Ducks being the highlights. Don't let the short section on SHW4 put you off this ride. There was a good shoulder all the way except on the railway overhead bridge. As always thanks...

Liz and Ross have organised this time away, in the Kaiteiki area, where Liz's family farmed and she spent her formative years. Ross met Liz here and has worked in the area. So there's lots of memories for them. We are based at the Kaiteiki Hall which is on Kaiteiki Valley Rd which is off Oio Rd Which is off SHW4 just east of Owhango, which is West of National Park in the Ruapehu district in the...

Wow! What can I say about this ride, except it would be one of the most scenic , if not the most scenic ride I've done in the North Isalnd of NZ. The beautiful roads, stunning rock formation and views all combine to make this stunning. I'm afraid my video doesn't do it justice. So if you're in the area ride it and see for your self. This was suppose to be a 9 day loop tour, but other comitments meant we only had a 5day window. So we decided to do the first 4 days to Taumruanui now nd the other 5 days later. It was a beautiful ride even though we have done it both ways numerous times before. The video is longer than normal, I hope you last the distance. Thanks for watching. We get taken up to the start of the track by helicopter. Then descend down from the tops of the Kaimanawa Ranges then through the Beech Forest back to the Kaimanawa Alpine Adventure Base. Don't be fooled into believing it's all down hill. The 400m of climbing in the ride are not easy. If you ride this do take time to take in the views. Thanks for watching.

I didn't have high expections of this ride. I was looking at the map for another loop ride in this area, when I saw the track heading over the Dunstan Range. We did think about an overnighter, but time was running out for our time in the South Is. Thompson Gorge Track to the saddle, is not technical just a good solid climb. Wider tyres than the 700-40's that I had on would've made it easier in the freshly graded gravel. Thanks for watchi...

Nick and I did this loop as a day a few years ago. I'll leave the link to that video in the video. Great Video, thanks for sharing
Thanks Tony. Not up to the standard of yours though.
Thanks for this as I wondered if I could ride it…answer is yes! Some great filming, useful commentary, superb scenery and ducks, and happy cyclists. Switch out the overly loud kitsch music next time and you’ll be good to go!
Thanks for your comment.
Sensational views! Great post, love it.
It's a great ride. Thanks for the comment.
What a lovely ride. Thanks for posting it.
My pleasure.
Inspirational!
I don't know about inspirational, but it was hard work, but beautiful.
Living the good life Brian!
Doing my best
Looks good. Are active members of this group in the Rotorua area? Thanks
Yes we're all from Rotorua, but it's not really a group you join. We're just friends who ride together and use the name so I don't have to change the credits every time I make a video.
You said it - a beautiful area to ride in. The gravel road surface looks pretty good too.
Yes. The gravel was perfect.
The Fisher Track looks less daunting in the video than I'd imagined. In my planning, I'd be riding the second half of your ride in the opposite direction and continuing south from Nat Park. Your steep descent on Fishers Track would be an ascent my way. How daunting a climb would it be in your opinion? I guess an option would be to bypass the track as a decent shoulder on SH4 from Raurimu to National Park sounds encouraging. I've abandoned the idea of riding the Kaiwhakauka and Mangapurua mud bowls hoping to do the Fishers Track route instead.
We've ridden Fishers track twice going up it, loaded, on our Horopito loops. Hillary was pleased to get to the top but Sue and I didn't find it that hard. We were all on non ebikes then. Now Sue is on an ebike. Enjoy.
That's reassuring, thanks Brian. So I think the final route from Owhango will be Oio Rd, Upper Retaruke Rd, Fishers Track, Marton Sash & Door Track and SH4 to either Ohakune or Raetihi on the way to Whanganui 😂 Should be a good taste of that area without the toothpaste-mud of the 2 hard-core tracks. Cheers.
Sounds great.
lovely spot
It certainly is.
Shouldn't that be Whakahoro? Nice ride great day.
Thanks. Yes it should. Typo error. I'll see if I can correct it.
Done
My wife and I did that same loop a couple of years ago. I did not anticipate how much of a climb it was back out to SH4 czcams.com/video/mOV3PlKj3xo/video.htmlsi=S_OFBF_4ABaD5R5E
Looks like a great loop. Fisher track especially. Thanks. Good to see you both going so well
Thanks John. I hope you both are keeping well
Another enjoyable video. Rode this last year and turned around at same point. Boy that road just goes on and on….Camped at Lake Chalice and had place to ourselves. Refreshed with a dip in the lake only to get sticky on the climb out. Great spot.
Thanks for commenting. I must admit I thought camping at the lake would've been magic. It looked so beautiful. Ride safe.
Loved this ride, but can get a bit windy/dusty. The views make it worthwhile. Wish I’d seen the baby crayfish….fascinating!
Thanks for the comment. The views are magnification aren't they.
Pedal or ebikes?
Hillary and I were on pedal bikes, Sue, Liz and Ross on E assist bikes.
Brian, another reason I'm lapping up any info on riding here concerns Blue Duck Station. You noted that the café wasn't open when you were there. Do you know if it is a viable stop for overnight accommodation (NOT camping!) and food, at least during the spring/summer season? If so, after riding the Timber Trail and on to Owhango, it could make a nice 3-day ride to Whakahoro to Ohakune to Whanganui. What do you think? 😀
Funny you should ask this question as only a few ago I enquired about staying one night in any of the Blue Duck accommodations. They got back to me very promptly. They normally only provide accommodation for 2 or more nights. I can't remember the exact figure, but it was around $360 for 2 people. How ever they do sometimes do a one night if it works with staff etc. They said they could do us one night for around $260 for a room in a lodge. That was outside our budget so we didn't take it any further. We were to provide our own food for that. Email them they are very prompt repliers. I hope this helps.
I realised I didn't answer the second part of your comment. That would be a great ride. From Owhango you could ride straight to National Park, either along Kaitieke Valley Rd to Raurimu then about 7km on SHW4, which is what we did in the next video. Or you could go to National Park view Fishers track as we did in the Horopito loop video. You can now ride from National Park to Ohakune without going on SHW4. Hope this helps.
Thanks for that info Brian. I think I'll skip Blue Duck Station for the same financial reasons you did. I didn't realise there was a way of biking from National Park to Horopito other than along SH4. Where is it because i assume you're not suggesting riding up those tracks to Ruatiti Rd? Btw, I rode the Old Coach Rd 10 days ago. It's a real bone-shaker and very slow going. I'm looking forward now to seeing your video and description of the Fisher Track.
I'm sorry I put you wrong with an alternative route. I thought it was up and running but it isn't, another year and it should be connected. You'll still have to ride the Old Coach Rd though. Sorry to get your hopes up.
@backcountryridingfriends That's OK. Good to know a track is planned although connecting to the Old Coach Rd may be a mixed blessing. Having just ridden the OCR northbound, I don't fancy it that much the other way. The cobblestones make for a rough ride and the grassy slopes at the southern end are easier to ride safely going uphill. After riding to Horopito, I chose to return to Ohakune on SH4 and Tohunga Rd, (SH49).
Brian, great video; particularly appreciated the superb drone footage as it showcases the character and nature of the area really well. I'd love to ride in this area some time and with this intention, I drove from Ohakune to Ruatiti Domain 10 days ago. Owhango to Whanganui via Oio Rd, Ruatiti Rd and the Raetihi-Pipiriki Rd looks appetising except for the connecting bit on the Kaiwhakauka track. As you (and others) have indicated, the gluey mud through there is problematic when wet. Further to Helen's comment, searching for location is greatly helped if place names (and there are heaps of long ones in this area), are spelt correctly, eg Whakahoro and Kaitieke, according to Google maps. 😊
Thanks for the comment. I'm not sure where your coming from with the spelling comment. Both Kaitieke and Whakahoro are spent as in Google maps.
Apologies, I thought the places in the video were written (in the captions maybe?) as KaitEIki and WhakOhoro. It's really only an issue when searching online. The spelling does matter then.
Brian I really enjoy your videos. A suggestion for people like me who are unfamiliar with places, would it be possible to provide more information regarding which district/area/island you are in? I know that I can search but it takes me away from your video.
I thought I'd done that in this video, at the very beginning and in the description. I'll put more info in the description. Thanks for the suggestion.
I've updated the description of both the video and playlist worth a detailed description of where Kaiteiki is.
Looks like another great ride. Thankyou. We have been talking about doing a few rides in this area, and you provide the information.
@@lynnemccarthy-my5mi yes Lyn a great area. The videos for the other 2 rides will be coming out over the next couple of weeks. But you'll have all the info from Komoot. All of the rides were stunningly beautiful.
That's another great showcase of this very pretty area! We pass through the edge of the area on the Kingmaker 1000km route with the Kiwi Randonneurs, I'm keen to do some more routes around the area.
Thanks for the comment. Yes it is a lovely area with allot of inter linking roads, both sealed and gravel. We've done numerous other rides in the area having ourselves at Otorohanga.
That's great country through there - but the rock is Ignimbrite, from the Taupo eruption, not limestone. It's awesome climbing material, very rough! Thanks for the great video.
Thanks for that information. I'll update it on the next video.
Sounds like Ozzy Osborn is narrating 😅
Looking good team! Such a beautiful ride 😍
Yes it was. Now to find time to do the outlet half.
Was such a great ride ,we watched it twice.amazing scenery.
Thanks Ross. Apart from the 3 punctures it was a great ride.
I watched the whole thing and it was cool thanks. The light purple house in between the old butchers and other colorful rundown building in Mananui is my grandmothers whanau. Can't put sheep in our Orewa house yards lol.
I'm so pleased you managed to watch the whole thing. Lovely it brought back some memories for you. Thanks for the comment.
Always enjoy the video clips of your adventures. Thankyou.
Thanks Lyn. It was a great ride, hopefully we'll get the other half done in April.
Really enjoyed your vid having bike packed through there recently. Well done, and thanks for sharing.
I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Isn't it stunning scenery all through that area. We were particularly lucky having the fresh snow on the tops. Nothing like snow to make it more spectacular. Happy riding.

Fantastic. Thanks for posting this ride. Look forward to riding it.
You're most welcome. Just be prepared for some good climbs along with the descents. Enjoy.
Very good
Thanks Maggie
Many thanks for the Video, great scenery, and an honesty box, unbelievable.
Thanks for your comment. Yes an honesty box now days is very rare, especially in that situation. I hope they aren't getting ripped off.
Great movie again Brian, here is a tech question for you. I am putting my ebike aside for a while and deciding to go gravel bike or road bike, but I am asking you which climbs steep hills the best on tarmac. I think you are on a gravel bike in this movie. I am thinking road bike but not sure. I am quite fit .
Thanks for the comment. My road bike is by far the easiest on hills. Now days you can normal fit up to 32mm tyres on a road bike. I run 28mm tyres on mine. I can still do smooth gravel etc on it. Enjoy.
Beautiful country.
It certainly was.
Great video, so much work gone into setting up those ride by shots, this is a really valuable resource for anyone considering doing the ride. Well done and thankyou.
Thanks so much for the comment. I really appreciate it.
Lovely day for it. Can you arrange some nice weather when I ride the A2O on March 1?😂
I'll do my best. Enjoy.
That looks like a fabulous ride Brian. Merry Christmas to you and Sue. Ride well in 2024
It was. Merry Christmas to you.
Not long ago then . Merry xmas and a prosperous new year to you Sue and Racheal . Looking forward to hosting you again soon
That's a very green central Otago , when did you do this ride Brian ?
Yes it was beautifully green, they'd had so much rain, there was grass every where and the stock were all beautiful. We did the ride on the 21st Nov 2023.
Thanks Brian. Merry Christmas
You're most welcome. Have a good Christmas, rest and drink heaps.
It was great meeting you out there. Love the film.
It was lovely having your company for that short time. I hope the rest of your trip went to plan. I'm pleased you like the video. Hopefully it'll inspire others to get out on our back country roads.
I continue to watch and enjoy your story. Great viewing. Interesting that you have not opted for the e-bike trend, at least pedal power has no range limitation. What make and model are the bikes? Brian, do you still have the Scott. Cheers from the south.
Hi Rob. Thanks for the comment. Both the bikes we were riding on that ride were E bikes. Sue's was a Jefferson which I converted to a front wheel drive Embiid. Mine is Willier adventure I imported over the lock down. Sue rides whites all the time, I pick and choose the rides I use an ebike on. My preference is not an ebike. In the latest video you'll see I'm riding my 1999 titanium touring bike I've modified with a new front fork, 650b wheel in the back to take wider tyres and cable disc brakes. It's my go to bike at the moment for anything not MTBing. Yes we've still got the Scotts, though Sue's just brought a Merinda, for the gravel rides. Thanks again for the comment and watching the videos. Brian
enjoyed your video Brian. I always enjoy a trip over Meyers Pass. Did it on horse a couple of times in the 80's.
It would've been great to do it on a horse. You'd see so much more. Thanks for the comment.
Great ride Brian , I like to drive over this road to Waimate a couple of times a year . Clarkesfield is also a good ride over the same hills just down the road a bit further
Thanks Steve. We'll have a look at Clarksfield next time we're down.
Great video Brian , thanks for promoting Duntroon. Good to see your gathering fresh greens
Thanks Steve. Duntroon is one of our favourite places, so it's just showing what we enjoy.
How do you find all these cool circuits? All over the country as well not just your own backyard, not that i know where your base is.
We're live in Rotorua. I spend allot of time looking at real paper maps. I used Kiwimaps rural roads maps. Then use Komoot on a laptop to finalize it. For example we were in Dunedin 2 days ago and wanted to go to Queenstown. I looked at the paper maps and saw a network of small roads stretching South. I decided Riversdale would be a good distance to drive. Looked at the map again, saw a loop of the appropriate length then went to Komoot to do it in detail. I look at both road and satilite view to see what the scenery is like. Download the Gpx file and away we're go. Sue always carries a paper map in case we decide to change something. I hope that helps, we also talk to the locals in the area to get ideas, like the ride we're doing today,. Ride safe.
@@backcountryridingfriends thanks
Great trip team . you'll have to put a tie back rein on Racheal if she's going to fast😂
Thanks Steve. I'll remember that for next time.
Awesome video & voiceover is great. Great effort at 73!! Cheers
Thanks so much for such a positive comment. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video.
Another great video.
Thanks for the comment. It's such a lovely area to bike in it would be hard to make a bad video. We really love the Domain Campground so it's another reason to keep coming back.
Hi Sue and Brian, loved your video. Thanks for taking the time to enjoy and film our backyard. Happy trails.
Thanks for the comment, it's greatly appreciated. We did another lovely ride utilising some of the A2O then coming back on the road, spending quite some time at Elephant rocks and the next fossil site. I'll be making a video of that but it'll be a few weeks until I get around to putting it together. There's 3 others in the queue before it. Thanks again.
Another great video showing some great landscape and riding. Thank you.
