We packed up some of the crew, a few dogs, and took a hike up Blue Mountain to visit a winter wonderland on the summit, and see the fire tower! Frosty beards and eyelashes were an extra bonus ;)

    Ive stayed at this lean to in may 2016. There was a lot less snow on the ground but we ended up getting snow that next morning and i had just enough clothing to sneak by 😬. I came back to hike black in the summer and on the descent down towards the lake we could hear the horn of the mohican or minnehaha on the lake and i just felt like i was in a different time altogether.

    The lake george wilderness is a great spot. There's lot of locations to park and make your way in and make a day or two trip. I've hiked buck and sleeping beauty many times on their own. Ive backpacked from hog town to black moutain and stayed at a lean to at the base on black, hiking down to lake george and out to shelving rock the next day. We even got some snow at night, in mid may lol

I moved to the North Carolina Piedmont. Maybe this gets answered later, can you camp in a hammock in other areas? or is it just now allowed around the leanto?

    • @JayMorrisonOutdoors
      @JayMorrisonOutdoors Před 7 měsíci

      Staying at the JBL property does involve some restrictions, and one of those is that within the property, you can only camp at the designated lean-tos and aren't allowed to use tents or hammocks unfortunately. That being said, you could camp in a primitive site *near* the property and use a tent or hammock if you want.

    57 years ago I led a small group of boys 14-15 starting from John's Brook Lodge and the Garden over Gothics, Saddleback, Basin and Haystack on as exquisite a day as you could ever have in late August. Came down the Phelps trail. 20 miles total. Not 6 but a bunch. Was in good shape then Haystack is considered #1 rated view in the high peaks because of the exceptional view of Marcy and the Panther Gorge. It is not an way summit to get to. If you haven't, do Noonmark. Incredible views of Giant just behind it, great range and Dix,.

    One of my all time favorite mountains. 57 years ago I led the first hike of Giant via Ridge trail for the camp I was a part of. Years later I had a profound healing experience on it. Them years later I took a very short hike to the Roaring Brook Falls with a friend. I found a fist size rock that had settled in the heart of a fallen tree root system. Might have been there hundreds of years. I took it home and still have it. I will always have a piece of this mountain with me

    I just got done watching your video about what you were able to put into that 45 liter backpack. I have to say I was pretty amazed by how much camping and hiking gear you got to fit in and on it. Though I guess you only need to boil water for your meals. So no need for something like a small 9-1/2" frying pan. Oh yeah, and about those so called water resistance dry bags you bought from Amazon. I bought the same exact ones and found them to be a little less than water resistance the hard way. By accidentally dropping one in a stream while I was holding it. By the time I got it back it had already leaked in some water. Fortunately there was nothing important in it like electronics or something like that. But still I was a little disappointed with them. So when I got back from my camping and hiking trip. I took all of my 8 dry bags sacks or whatever you want to call them. And gave them a good spraying down with some Nixwax water resistance spray. Then let them dry out for a couple of days and that made a huge difference. But I do like you do with them and use them to put different items in them depending on the color. Red of course for first aid items and pack that where it is easy to get to. I also have the same exact Anker brand 20000mAh portable power bank. Plus a few other ones, just depends on what I plan on using them for. I've never done the hammock thing before, but it is definitely something I want to look into. Especially if I know where I will be hiking has plenty of trees around. I could see how something like that could come in handy and from what I have been told before. Is that once you sleep in a hammock you will never want to sleep on the ground again! Oh yeah, and the good old dryer lint is something I have been using for a long time now. Only difference is that I put it in a empty TP roll so I can just throw it into the campfire I am about to start. And I'll even go as far as putting a little bit of hand sanitizer on the TP roll. Just to help it get started faster which seems to work really well. And you can't beat those Hot Hands hand warmers. Especially on a cold night I always put a couple in my sleeping bag about a hour before I hit the sack.

    @melissabillmire8641 Před 8 měsíci

    I know this video is some 4 years old by now. But after watching you put everything together in separate Ziploc bags. To me seems like a huge waste of time money and most of all Space and Weight. As a threw hiker at least for me when I know I'll be out on the trail for a week or more at a time. One of the most important things I take into consideration is the amount of pack weight. I will need for everything that is going to go into my backpack. And as all the threw hiker butwill tell you which is very good advice is. For every pound in your backpack is like ten pounds on your feet. Guess what I am getting at is, I noticed that you put the oatmeal packets into a separate Ziploc bah for each day. Which in my opinion is not practical because of what I said before. When I start planning out my meals for my camping and hiking trips. I try to consolidate as much as I can to keep the weight down. I know what people are going to say about this. That a little Ziploc bag doesn't weigh enough to make much of a difference. But when you add up the amount of Ziploc bags used in this video. Plus all the wasted packages that were put into all these Ziploc bags. That I assume you might throw away at your nearest trail stop trash can. Think about all that plastic from all those Ziploc bags. Not including the packages that went into them at least to me. Seems like a lot of effort, time, money, space, weight, and waste. I've gone the complete opposite direction than what was done in this video. To not only prepare my own meals for my camping and hiking trips. But to also make sure I am not wasting valuable space and weight in my backpack. All it took to get me started on making my own meals is two things. One is a dehydrator, and the other is a food vacuum sealing machine. With these two items I can make all kinds of delicious meals. That end up costing a fraction of the price for even one freeze dried meal. But don't discount freeze dried fruits, vegetables, powdered milk, and other things you can find. That don't weigh a lot, but still pack a punch when it comes to nutrition and nutrients. My local REI store sells these really cool heat resistant plastic bowls that fold up into a very small piece. And they can hold up to 1.5 liters of whatever you want to put into them. The best part is actually two things, one is that they have graduation marks on them so you can see and or measure the amount you are putting into them. The other thing is that they are extremely easy to clean, fold up and reuse again and again. Taking up practically no space whatsoever, as they fold up into a small thin piece that can slip in my cooking setup. Anyway, just my two cents so take it for what it is worth. Because I've been there done that before when I first started going on camping and hiking trips. Thinking I had to bring everything but the kitchen sink. Into my backpack and the next thing I knew. My pack weight was some 35 to 40 lbs and by the end of the day. I felt just like what I was told by some more experienced hikers. Which I mentioned before about for every pound in my backpack was like ten pounds on my feet. Because by the end of the day all I wanted to do is set up my tent, sleeping bag and pad and hit the sack. While everyone else was out next to the campfire (where permitted of course) enjoying each others company. And cracking jokes about me and my pack weight and not being able to handle it. Peace out everyone and get out there and explore the great outdoors!!! I hope at least one person got something out of this big long comment. About me and my experiences and learning what not to do. Because that is what I had to do by learning the hard way the first few times I went camping and hiking.
