Elisabeth Schwarzkopf descends from heaven to sing a trill (with Hopf and Karajan)
Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1868)
Music-drama in III acts with music and libretto by Richard Wagner
Above is an excerpt from the third act's fifth scene, starting in Walther's prize song: “Morgenlich leuchtend im rosigen Schein” (Shining in the rosy light of morning) up until Eva's phrase: “Keiner wie du so hold zu werben weiss!” (No one can woo as graciously as you!). Walther is sung by Hans Hopf, Eva by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Hans Sachs by Otto Edelmann. The performance was recorded between the 27th of July and the 24th of August, 1951 at the Festspielhaus of Bayreuth, Germany. Conducting was Herbert von Karajan with the Chor und Orchester der Bayreuther Festspiele.
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia describes the big scene before the above excerpt and the excerpt itself as such:
“...The prize contest begins. Beckmesser attempts to sing the verses that he had obtained from Sachs. However, he garbles the words (Morgen ich leuchte) and fails to fit them to an appropriate melody, and ends up singing so clumsily that the crowd laughs him off. Before storming off in anger, he yells that the song was not even his: Hans Sachs tricked him into singing it. The crowd is confused. How could the great Hans Sachs have written such a bad song? Sachs tells them that the song is not his own, and also that it is in fact a beautiful song which the masters will love when they hear it sung correctly. To prove this, he calls a witness: Walther. The people are so curious about the song (correctly worded as The prize contest begins. Beckmesser attempts to sing the verses that he had obtained from Sachs. I had the pleasure of singing with the late Ms Nadler many years after this wonderful class. She was a lot of fun to work with and it was undoubtedly a "voice and a half", a very powerful and fairly flexible mezzo. But she was never really at home on the top of her range and Eboli is notoriously tricky because it was actually composed by Verdi for one mezzo (Rosine Bloch) and then when plans changed, finished off with a very different singer, Pauline Gueymard-Lauters, in mind. That explains the divergent characters and tessiture of the the "Veil song", clearly for a lighter, more flexible voice (Bloch) and "O Don Fatale" for a far more powerful and dramatic instrument (Gueymard). Not that Sheila would have ever done the role on stage-- the voice was just too short on top and she always billed herself as a contralto. But isn't Ms Callas amazing! Even with the remains of her voice, and close to the end of her career/life, she could summon up the many facets of Eboli's mercurial character.

As charming as this clip is, I feel it also gives insight to the basis of her technique which was genius. We can hear she isn't opening up and singing super loud but rather she is keeping everything small and controlled which is like a spring board to then sing big in the same way - hence the dramatica coluratura label.. seems like singers today don't have control over their instruments the same way,,

I now realize conductor Molinari-Pradelli sped up the tempo just a tad to the end. I wonder if this had been prearranged with Caballe? Some conductors slow it up to flaunt the "Verdi tragic chords" ....which would've made it harder for MC to do this!

Maria’s speaking voice is very soothing…deep & commanding, but still soft and feminine. She does speak English here with a curious mixture of accents-Greek/Italian/British with a hint of American. This isn’t surprising considering that she was born in the U.S. and lived there until she was 13 and then moved to Greece where she received her musical education and spent a good chunk of her adult life in the UK and in Italy.
