Registrace 5. 01. 2021
Dream it - Live it - Love it!
I'm Andy.
It has long been an ambition to escape everyday life and live my dream of sailing the world.
In the summer of 2021 I moved to Greece with my ex partner Svetlana aboard our first boat Delfina - a 42' Ketch with our Cocker Spaniels - Truffle and Strelka, to give it a try and learn to sail. We explored the western side of Greece from Corfu down to Messalonghi.
We loved it! In December 2021 we sold Delfina to buy 'Captain Svetlana' formerly Seafire - a Hunter 460 as our permanent home.
Sadly in the summer of 2024 my dreams crashed when Svetlana and I split up. Homeless and boatless with no money I started my search for a project boat.
When I came across Driskos - a 1988 Beneteau First 305 she had been abandoned for 2 years. Soul boards floating and the engine in pieces.
Join me on my journey to bring this boat back to life and realise my dream.

A shorter one this week. With Svetlana delayed in the UK I decide to go scouting for somewhere to get diesel for the boat. This turns out to be the far side of the citadel near the ferry port. Hi Andy. It's been a while since we bumped into each other in Burseldon. Although €192.20 seems a lot, they average about £145 in the UK or £90 for a third party one. Still over priced for what it is, but then again it is for a boat!
Hi Chris. It certainly has. I believe we call it tourist tax over here.
The whole drum is around a forestay normally with a tensioner then a double plate with bolts which allows the drum to sit higher on the forestay. You need to check that it will move up and allow enough room for the top furler bearing to still rotate or you will have problems with bowling the mast .Good luck but if I can help then please contact me Eich.
Got it. I couldn't work it out. If you can help it would be great
How are you gettingbon with the roller.first thing is to see if it will go any higher up the stay. If it will then just set it higher up but check that there is enough foom at the top to allow the halliard to t o raise the sail up to the top swivel without fouling the halliard. If its too high it will trap the halliard and will not ratate .CaptainSvetlana
The furler will go up the fore stay but I can’t work out how to move the drum. There is room at the top to avoid bowling.
A boat should have one owner, not two. Twice as many bad ideas. I think it's ok to lend it out. That Beneteau 30.5 is a gem and no hull blisters. Good chemistry. I'd do whatever I can to avoid cluttering up the bow.
I agree but we can't change the past. I haven't fitted a windlass but I don't trust this 20kg delta. I'm thinking of fitting a 15kg rocna instead.
@@CaptainSvetlana I've heard that aluminum anchors are extra grip. Could you throw the anchor from another part of the boat?
Possibly. Right now I heave it over the side of the pulpit and set the chain in the bowsprit to lower it. Raising is the opposite then I lash it to the pulpit on top of the chain locker.
Can I ask what brand of paint for the hull did you use? And also what anti-fouling paint did you use? Thanks for a good down to earth channel. A breath of fresh air, I can tell you in the CZcams world! Take care and enjoy it as much as we are.
It’s a brand called Sea Life. I got it from JFK marine in Vliho. The anti foul is a generic one. They sell it by the litre here. It’s as cheap as chips but all the locals use it and I had it on Captain Svetlana. Two years and hardly any growth.
Why don't you keep your Hunter and sell the 50% share needed to release Svetlana? Nice job on thefirst.
There have been developments on that front that I can’t go into on a public forum. Let’s just say it’s not an option at the moment
Gotcha. hope it all pans out for you. Fair winds.
No bad boat for free
Thank you. It still needs work
looking really good now, i had the same problem with securing anchor chain, i just made a small snubber line that i secure to c;leats either side, works really well.
A good idea. The 20kg delta is too big. I struggle to haul it especially with chain so I need to think about how I can use the mainsail windlass and ropes to haul out
Have autopilot st2000 for your boat, if you need)
That would be great. Whereabouts are you?
You have a gem. The audio level could use a little more attention.
Thank you. I struggle with radio microphones at the moment
12 volt chest freezers are inexpensive. Try soda bottles for the water you drink. Avoid batteries wired in parallel. At the least, they need an isolation switch, and separate chargers. A pair of six volt batteries is best, if you want big 12 volts.
Thank you for the advice. I have upgraded the power on the boat. The video for that is released in two weeks and available for viewing on Patreon or ko-fi. I’m on the lookout for a chest freezer right now
@@CaptainSvetlana grab a Chinese one and always run it on ECO mode. Never max
Just found this channel and quite enjoying it, but the subscribe, comment and like banners repeatedly coming up in the middle of the screen gets old very quickly!
Welcome aboard. I’ve toned it down in later videos. Let me know how it goes.
Great going mate....One day at a time.
Siga siga as the Greeks say. Thank you for your kind words
You're a hero mate....
Thanks. Really appreciate the comment
Tidy engine but i bet you wish you had checked it over for torques before installing it... Ive just seen the launch result. Frustrating...
I agree but all resolved now.
Amazing that was a Zubor class landing assault hovercraft. The largest hovercrafts in service.. the Greeks bought a small number from the Russians a long time ago.
Yes it was a surprise to see it
Nice work. I picked up a Beneteau First 40.7 that was in quite bad shape. Not as bad as what you started with. Nicely done. Unfortunately it never ends. Have fun on your adventure. We’ll be watching
Thank you. It’s coming together nicely but things are slowing down due to lack of funds.
An anchor is never to big
Great progress, you really know how to crack on. How about a bimini and one of those little chutes above the hatch to aerate the cabin.
Great ideas but I’ve run out of money right now so it will have to wait a little bit
Nice boat, great bargain Looks like your through hulls are domestic valves! Ideally you only need one, for the engine inlet.
The main through hulls are true design. Two are bronze because of the size but all are marine grade.
Chuck a cover over your main or you are going to have sun issues with the sail as it is. Nice work sorting her out and getting her moving under her own power.
That’s the plan the old one is almost unusable
Well done and good luck. Looking forward to next episode.
Thank you
Did you use a moisture meter to check the deck core? In my experience, anything that neglected probably has a saturated deck core. Water enters around penetrations and radiates out.
I didn’t but the deck is solid. No movement and there are no stains or signs of leaking inside
Greetings from Jonno on Nota Bene. Good luck... a BIG project!
Thank you. I’m pleased with the progress so far
Enjoyed the video andy Nice to see you back on the water 🍺 Yamas
Thanks Steve hope to see you around
she sits nice in the water .. good job so far 😃
Thank you. Hard work but paying off
Svetlana wrote on her Facebook page that u left here on Greek island, and she is insane case u dont day how to maintain the engine and its broken, can you clear the situation?
When I left the boat had full tanks and a working engine. Svetlana moved it then told me she couldn’t start it. The heat exchanger end caps have been leaking. I did an episode last year where I attempted a temporary repair. I have taken it to be repaired but someone who can weld aluminium is a rare thing. It takes time. The part will be ready next week and then I will fit it. I know how to maintain an engine just fine. I haven’t abandoned her and I don’t want to discuss the details of our relationship breakdown in public. I don’t know what she has been telling people that’s her business I do know the truth and it’s not on her Facebook page.
Uh oh!
Здравствуйте! А это случайно не стоянка в Нео Пирамус у Ставроса?))
No. Nowhere near. Sorrt
looking good there, will be doing mine in a couple of weeks, buffing the hull and anti foul, makes such a difference.....
Thank you. It does yes. I have been focusing on things that I can’t do in the water. It’s amazing how this boat is coming back to life
Hi Andy I’m liking the new boat repair videos , hopefully you should pick up some more subscribers, everyone loves boat restoration videos
Thanks Nick. Looking for the next one now.
Excellent work. No hanging about!
Thank you!
when i did my keel, i did it in many small sections, you need to cover exposed metal as quick as you can, otherwise it will react , faster you reseal the the exposed metal , the better.... ( was priming mine within 30 minutes)
I redid the rust treatment then washed and primed immediately. Good advice. Thank you
Is this the catalac from Greece/ Nydri?
Yes it is in Nydri. I wasn’t fast enough and it sold.
I bought a Catalac 900 three years ago and love it. a very competent motor sailer with a long history and good build quality. I have a short video on CZcams about our boat. If you have the time and money and can do the work yourself it would make a great investment. I wish you well.
Thank you. Unfortunately I wasn’t quick enough. But I did get a Beneteau First 305 for €400. Keep watching to see how I get on.
Nice job, looking forward to watching the engine replacement.
Thank you. Purring like a kitten.
Lots of sanding. Couldn't you just paint over?
I want to see the state of the hull. Check for osmosis and hidden problems. Next time a light sanding for sure.
Can you please tell me where did you find it? Or where should I search ? I’ve searched in boatyards but they will ask about 10.000€ for one like you(eg MargaronaBoatyard preveza). I would extremely appreciate if you can help me ! Thanks
Word of mouth. I asked around at the local bars as well as the yards. The smaller yards may be better than the bigger, more formal places. I also posted on local Facebook groups.
I heard of one at Aktio I don’t know if it’s still there. I set my budget at €5k.

Hey there. We met you a few days back in VYC with my wife so just catching up on your channel. Seems we share a birthday too 👍
Nice. Welcome to the channel
VEry interested in this one, i recently bought a Jeanneau 30ft, very similar boats, can you tell me what year this boat is ?
Thank you. It’s a 1988 First 305
Getting there, was that the boom bent up on the deck?
It’s the whisker pole. Thankfully the ends are intact so I may be able to do something with them.
Morning. Looking good from what we can see so far. Still think you have got a little gem. The hull looks good 🤔
I’m pleasantly surprised yes. She’s shaping up nicely
great video but you want to loose the continous banners appealing for likes etc
Next week’s video uses a different format for those. It should be less in your face.
was going to say exactly the same, really interesting video but those pop ups all the time......
Like I said the videos are a couple of weeks in advance at the moment. Next week will have a different pop up and less of them.
It's not abandoned if you payed for it.
It was abandoned - I tracked the owner down. If I hadn't it would have still been abandoned and probably sunk in six months.
I think you've done great, possibly too much. Take it easy mate.
I’m recovering nicely thanks. If you done use it you lose it so I will put up with the pain for now.
