Edo Hannema Watercolour Art
Netherlands
Registrace 16. 11. 2009
The watercolor is one of the most difficult forms of visual art. The quirky nature of the medium, that the painter tries to tame, but still shows a degree of freedom, is a challenge for many artists.
In experienced hands like those of Edo Hannema it can lead to amazing results.
With his passion for the landscape, with water and the Dutch skies. They play a dominant role in his paintings, he knows to catch the sparkling light and intimate atmosphere. He let his watercolors breath, and changes transparent “wet” areas with expressive tones and details. However, He suggest more then he really paints, Edo Hannema know where to stop, this a sign of years of experience.
His work has a realistic basis, with their own interpretation and a personal touch.

Watercolour demo Learning from Ron Ranson
We all learn from the better painters.
So when we make a master copy, don't treat it as something you accomplished yourself.
Write on the finished painting you did it from a book or photo and write the original artist on this watercolour.
Or maybe better, just destroy it. The learning moment was while you painted it. Not while you store it.
If you don't write it down, and you find the painting again after 15 years or more, you probably forgot it was a copy.
And you think, ow, what was I good there! ;-)

I think you are right
Thank you for calling out the colors.
My pleasure, every brand have the same colours, but not the same pigments in those tubes!
Very nice
Thank you very much
Thank you, that was really useful. I have been working my way through Ron’s watercolours book and doing all the exercises, but hadn’t really worked out how to paint with the corner of the hake. Watching you really helped (once I worked out that as a leftie I needed to use the opposite corner!). Please could you explain why you did the background trees before the mountains?
Thank you Helen, Well I should have done the mountains first. and I would come away with it, if my brush was a bit drier so I did get a stiffer mixture. But now I had to come back a second time. that was not the best plan. I altered it the next day, now I have snow top mountains. Also beware of Hake painters on here YT that are painting way too dry, and they scribble and dab more than they paint. Stay away from those figures.
@@EdoHannema-Watercolour-Art That’s a really interesting point about the scribble and dab, because I have been trying to paint a house wall covered in an autumn vine and now you’ve said it I have realised that’s exactly what I was doing and why it didn’t look good. I’ll try again later making sure that I paint not dab. Thanks again
@@helendavies7177 If your brush is too dry, you never get the brilliance watercolour can give. So a Sponge or cloth, tissues are all there too control the wetness. You can see a dab, but it can also be a small brushstroke for making grass. If you paint the Vine wet enough, you can add , greens, reds and more colours that are suited for a vine. when it is to dry, nothing will happen. Oliver Pyle has a excellent demo to control your wash. czcams.com/video/r6ORJqjR27E/video.htmlsi=2sppzTGs8Zy3U3Ty Oliver is a good teacher, maybe the best on youtube.
@@EdoHannema-Watercolour-Art thank you I’ll look it up
Great one Edo! Nice clear instruction. Thank you so much.
Thanks Debbie, good to read you liked it.
Vielen Dank für das Videos.
es war mir eine wahre Freude.
Thank you sir! I am just a beginner and find your instructions very useful.
My pleasure, good to hear that it is helpful. Thanks
Thanks do much for the lesson Edo...and the mountains are fine!
Thank you very much. This morning I fixed the dark edges from the mountain tops. It could only be done after at least 12 hour. I am sure the complained did know this.
Awesome edo I’m going g to post a link in the Ron Ranson group
Thank you so much Joe, that would be nice from you.
Nice to have you back Edo, thanks for this nice watercolor demo, another great tutorial.
I never was away, I just don't make many youtube movies. I paint a lot outdoors. And a camera there and talking it through is not so handy. And I don't want to make long videos, not a lot of people look longer than 20 minutes. Thank you very much.
Another great lesson! Thank you Edo

Well come back Edo good to see you. Another beautiful painting thank you. The mountains look superb. Thanks
@@geoffmitchell6515 Thank you Geoff. The mountains without the subject are just okay. Even when I paint plein air I alter the view. For exact copies we can take a photo. 😉
Hi Edo, how as the Art Toolkit palette worked for you. I am interested in if the pans hold enough paint and if they leak whenbyou take the palette travelling for plein air. Thanks Joe
Not a lot paint go into the pans. But for pigments I use a lot, I have bigger pans. But it's more for sketching, or sketchbook paintings. I would not recommend starting up a half sheet. It can be done, but there are other palettes for that.
Very nice 👍
Thank you very much
I like it very much. You have always a great way of teaching ❤😊
I keep trying. 😁
So lovely!!🌷
Thank you very much
Edo, I love your tutorials. You create beautiful scenes with such an ease.
Thank you very much Magdalena. The ease comes from almost 40 year painting watercolours.
That "Christmas Tree" I thought was a good chimney; all you needed was to stop out a little white smoke in the air above.
I shall do that next time. thanks.
Love it you let people know the colors you are using very informative and no background music.fantastic
Thank you. I do have background music sometimes. But soft. In quiet passages. But don't look at very old movies from me. I just listen to music while painting. I didn't care much who is viewing. I just did want to see myself paint. (Learn process)
Hi Edo, can you tell me the title of the Ray Campbell Smith video you mention at the. eginning of this. Thanks.
www.seebafilms.co.uk/art-w.html it is named watercolour. I have three of him. But this one did the trick for me.
Ben je nederlander? Zo klink je tenminste Mooie video's
Nee, ik ben een Amsterdammer. 😁😁 Grapje hoor.
Beautiful Edward Seago is one of my favorites 😊
Thank you very much. Seago was and is one of the best!
Really lovely! Thank you!
Thank you very much
A lovely result Edo, as always, with such a limited pallet ! I must try my pthalo blue as I avoid it because it’s such a strong colour. The greens here a beautiful.
You need to be careful, but it can be done. Dried up tube pigment is probably the best for phthalo pigments.
Moin Edu.
Princeton Aqua Elite sind sehr gute Pinsel. Sonst hätte ich es nicht beworben! Aber der Maler bleibt die treibende Kraft!
Moin Edu. Und schon wieder ein ganz besonderes Werk. I love your painting so much. Greetings from Lübeck. Ingo
Thank you Ingo. Watercolours can be simple, and nice at the same time.
So many great lessons in this one painting... thank you, Edo!
Thia one did have a lot of techniques in it. try them to incorporate in your own work.
Love this one Edo. Always look forward to your videos and always learn something new from you. Thanks for brightening my weekend. Warm wishes from Kent Uk
Thanks Steven! This one was fun to make! best wishes and a good Sunday!
Zo mooi! Dankjewel!
Dankjewel. normale lengte is 45 minuten.
Wonderful demonstration again Edo nice to see how many different shades you can achieve with a limited palette, many thanks 👍👍🥃
Thank you Richard, I think I will continue the limited palette. Next time three pigments!
Thank you. Another beautiful painting
Thank you very much ❤️
I just saw this, that was very eye opening, thank you
If you use staining pigments it is not so easy to remove.
Excellent helpful video again, Edo. Thanks so much. Lovley background music as well. ❤
Thank you very much Anna ❤️ Sometimes I hear music in TV programmes. And I search for it and use it. But sometimes CZcams marks it as forbidden. But this one is always okay by them.
Thanks Edo, a wonderful lesson and a pleasure to see you again. I'm too scared to use phthalo blue. Perhaps time to try it again.
It will stain your palette. but it is a beautiful pigment. Maybe if you buy a student quality it is less aggressive. Earlier you did have Monastral Blue. it was a Copper sort of Pigment, like the green on old copper roofs. I guess it was poisonous. So they made the Phthalo blue. Like they made Phthalo Green, because Viridian is not very strong. But very beautiful and transparent.
You would like to paint like Ray Campbell Smith...while I would like to paint like you, I love your work.
Well, I just pick up the techniques. I aim for the English watercolour style. for me the most attractive. Thank you very much!
@@EdoHannema-Watercolour-Art ...and so am I 😁
I'm from Germany and love your lessons very very much❤ thanks!
So nice to read, and encouraging! thank you
Wonderful, Edo! I learn so much from your color mixing... keeping the colors bright and transparent and NOT muddy. Thank you so much for these terrific lessons!
Well I did get mud in the past. But Maimeri got only single pigments in their tubes. There are popular brands that have even 4 pigments in one tube. So when you mix two of those tubes together you have 8 pigments in a mix. Easy mud creators. But Venetian, Light red or English red stays dangerous. you can see in the movie how powerful it can be.
Thanks, Edo, for another excellent demo-hadn’t heard of Roy Campbell Smith before!
He lived long enough to be known. Ray became 101. He died 2016 if I remember it well. Born in 1915. Remarkable. My pleasure 🙏
Beautiful Edo thank you so much
Thanks ☺️ Geoff.
it is such a pleasure to watch and listen to you. Your paintings are beautiful. Your explanations of mixing colors is very helpful. Thank you.
Limit your palette is the key to succes. This said I have many more options on my palette. And I can chose 5 other pigments and make a painting with those. But don't dip in every 24 wells you squeezed out pigment.
Many thanks for another excellent demonstration. I really appreciate being shown different limited palettes. Especially ones using thugs like Phthalo Blue and Venetian Red that one might tend to be nervous of.
They are really powerful pigments. On my normal palette with tube pigments, I let them dry. When you dip your brush in those wells, tge pigment that comes of is not so rich as the pans. Pans have different ingredients. When you wet these, the pigment flies of. Thanks for your nice comments. 👍🏻
Always a pleasure to watch you paint! The apparent simplicity that is actually complexed.
Mix, Apply and leave it alone is the trick. Aim for it, and you will be awarded in your art. Thanks Seija
Another great one Edo!
Thank you so much Rented!
I love it at Edo! You always amaze me You hardly do any drawing and your paintings are absolutely beautiful I always start out and I end up with a big mess I'm going to have to start painting right along next to you. I love your work so much!
I always try to keep my drawwork as few as possible. Then the brush is more free! And I did one already. And you need a plan that visualise it in front of you. The limited palette helps a lot. after the video from RCS I painted for years with those 5 pigments.
I liked the sky technique a lot
Thanks Jim. Its a nice technique. But bigger paper, bigger brushes would go better!
