      I was not saying shut the play down. I was saying the foul occurs simultaneously with the snap for penalty enforcement options. The reason this is important is that it is not a foul until the ball is snapped, that is why we say it occurs simultaneous with the snap. If the player got off before the snap, no foul. Other example would be an potential illegal shift. If two players shift and the ball is snapped before they become set, foul. If they came set even though both were shifting, not a foul. Could have been a foul, but not until the ball is snapped. Hope this makes sense.

    The fact that the umps are NOT gonna call a replant even if back foot lands first by judging where they think the front foot woulda landed is so silly... Example: I can generate tons more power with 2 stationary feet throwing a football than standing stationary on one leg. Even if the front foot doesn’t go further, it generates way more power to have a planted back foot.

    Last year our Umpire lined up in the offensive backfield and positioned just outside the left tackle...it was an easy call for him to determine whether the QB was outside the FBZ.

  • @AmirBrooks
    @AmirBrooks Před 5 dny

    If I was on the field in this position, once a member of my crew has told me there's no receiver in the area I'm dropping my flag on this one. From the referee's viewpoint, it would certainly look like the QB never left the tackle box and it would like the 2 defenders are close enough. Personally I would line up a little bit tighter - just outside the tackle / equal with the tight end, as this gives me a good angle. However, looking at the replays it certainly is tight as to whether the QB was in or out of the pocket, and whether he's under duress or not. `Going by the IAFOA mechanics manual, the when in doubt principle says "When in doubt, the passer has not intentionally grounded the ball" (MM-6.2.19). A centre judge would be very useful in this situation!

    I am very grateful for this video. Many of the video play analysis resources out there have a "here's a play, here's the right call" where they're showing something that everyone can agree on and learn from. But we need to see the plays where even experts can disagree, because that's where we dig into the philosophies and the nuances that help us grow as officials. Nice job MIBT team! (And because I can't keep my own darn mouth shut: I have no flag. R 29 is a faster runner and was palm-on-chest the whole way down, and K 21 delivered a wraparound takedown at the end which by technique was a hold but by philosophy provided zero material advantage to K team. That takedown at the end is a talk-to so they know I'm watching if they escalate later. As someone likes to say, you have to Make It Be There and I just can't. Or as others in the officiating realm say: Catch the sharks, leave the minnows alone.)

  • @AmirBrooks
    @AmirBrooks Před 2 měsíci

    The only clue we get that this could possibly be a TD is how both wing officials are walking in ON the goal line. If either of them were positive that the ball carrier was stopped short, I'd want to see them haring in a good half yard short, selling the crap out of the call. Just remember, no cheap points. Only award a TD if you're 100% sure.

  • @briandow2974
    @briandow2974 Před 2 měsíci

    I'm not exactly sure of this philosophy. This receiver didn't get knocked down nor does he even continue to participate. In my opinion as an LOS, this receiver was in their area and I don't think we can read their minds. Tim got passionate but also a bit too worked up.

    • @MakeItBeThere
      @MakeItBeThere Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks Brian. Yes, to be accurate, the motion man did not get "knocked down" but he did get knocked off course. And you are correct that he doesn't continue moving. But if you re-watch the clip, you will see that the ball is already in the air when the player stops. The point we tried to make in the video is we are not reading anyone's mind, just reading the play. It is clear the legal contact by the defense caused the potential receiver to change path. That is enough in our opinion to take off the intentional grounding. And if you were a short wing on my crew, I would expect that on this play. If it is your crew, you may feel differently which would be your right. The reason for the passion or even getting worked up is that as officials, we should look for reasons to not throw flags and only throw flags when the are absolutely necessary. Our job is the manage the game insuring no team gets an unfair advantage within the confines of the rules. There are times where a rule dictates we throw a flag and other times where we use sound judgement on whether we throw a flag or not. This play is not a rules play, it is a judgement play and did not need a flag. Thanks again for your comment Brian, always appreciated!

    What if a lineman made the same, quick, flinching movement as the quarterback? If no one was drawn into the neutral zone, I'd have a quick discussion with the quarterback. Otherwise I'd lean heavily towards a false start with the QB simulating action at the snap. A stadium microphone would be very helpful to announce the action that led to calling a false start. It would minimize the boo's from one side of the field.

  • @johnm8096
    @johnm8096 Před 2 měsíci

    Once the kick touches anything out of bounds the ball is dead. The fact that the player who touched it returns in bounds is insignificant. Free kick out of bounds is the only foul here.

    • @MakeItBeThere
      @MakeItBeThere Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, once any loose ball touches something out of bounds, including a player or and official, the ball is dead. However, from this angle, we are not exactly sure what happened on this play. If the out of bounds player re-established after being out of bounds, then the ball has NOT touched anything out of bounds. The kick touches this player first before touching anything else. Since it is a kicking team player, the foul is illegal participation in HS football. I agree with you as I said in the video, I would just call this a kick out of bounds.

    definitely created an unfair advantage by the wide receiver using his body to block the defender. I would support an OPI call. Would you suggest the wing official punch forwards or backwards to make it clear if the pass was caught in front / behind the LOS in this situation?

    • @MakeItBeThere
      @MakeItBeThere Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks for the comment! If in your judgement, you have the contact as OPI then ok. But this specific play and contact is not OPI because it did not occur beyond the beyond the NZ it was at the NZ. Rule 7-7. We would not want a wing to punch to indicate if a ball is caught in front or behind NZ/LOS as we use punches to indicate whether a pass is forward or backward only.

  • @briandow2974
    @briandow2974 Před 2 měsíci

    This is a really tough call...especially with a 5 man crew. My initial responsibilities I have two receivers on my side as the H. I do not have any help with from the B. At that point, I get the back coming out too and the B is probably not assisting me yet due to the time it takes for recognition. I think it is a foul and I am excited if I get it, however, I completely understand why this would not be gotten. You would have to see the head of the blocking receiver to identify any intent. (I always answer these prior to listening to the experts in the clip.

    • @MakeItBeThere
      @MakeItBeThere Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks Brian. If you are going with a foul on this, make sure the block occurs beyond the LOS because on this play, as we mentioned, the block looks right at the line. I also applaud you for making a personal judgment first on a play to see where you are on it.
