Written description of video tutorial steps
5 Steps to Make Your Ruffle Collar
Before you begin your sewing, pre wash your fabric to allow for shrinking. Press (Iron) you fabric to remove wrinkles and lay right sides together down on your working space. Awesome
1. Check out the Pattern Directions, find and cut out the pattern pieces that you will be using. This is found on the first page of your directions in the bottom left corner.
For the ruffle we using Pattern piece 7 from M4612 Costumes in this workshop. Or you can make a large rectangle 5.5" inches wide x 44.5" inches long (large). You can see in the video that it has worked well on MC, she is a medium to large dog with a 16 inch neck.
Note: In general, you will want the length of your fabric strip to be 3-4 times the length of the finished ruffle that you desire.
2. Now you are ready to pin your pattern piece 7 onto your fabric (right sides together). Cut the pattern piece out of your fabric but leave it pinned.
Before removing your pattern, transfer markings to wrong side of fabric for the elastic and remove your pattern. Pin your fabric together with right side of your fabric facing one another.
3. Stitch the collar ruffle section together at each end using a 5/8" seam allowance. By hand or use a machine.
Make a 1/2" (1.3 cm) hem on the long side of your fabric. You can press and pin the hem down to hold your hem in place while stitching.
4. To gather ruffle, stitch along your marked line down the center of your collar, using the longest stitch possible, stitch again 1/4" (6mm) above pervious stitch. Or you can hand stitch long stitches along your line, which I suggest because they are easier to work with.
Remove the collar from your sewing machine. Find the bobbin thread tail on one end of the collar and begin pulling. The fabric will begin to gather. Continue to pull the bobbin thread and work the fabric down until the entire dog collar is evenly gathered to about 25 inches (64 cm).
Note: Creating the ruffle can be a little tricky and the more you make them the better you become, but you can learn and do this. I still practice myself, but I don't give up even when I have to redo work. Use Google to research other methods for gathers.
5. Cut a section of elastic the measurement of your dog's neck plus 1 inch (2.5 cm).
On wrong sides center elastic between your parallel lines over gathers and hand baste into place overlapping the elastic 1/2" inch (1.3 cm) at seam. When stitching stretch elastic while stitching.
We used a zig zag stitch and machine stitched it twice, refer to the how to video.
Your new dog collar ruffle is now completed; you have done a great job.
