Elisha and Katie Voetberg - Talk About The Weather
This is a song that Elisha recently wrote after feeling convicted over having a trivial conversation on a flight. Pretty sure we can all relate.
Listen on Spotify: open.spotify.com/album/0ULfxVsJw0XVLeCwd8rVFe?si=SgYGqOmZTOi8ifsmzPFcAQ
Verse:
We're on the precipice of eternity
a heartbeat from our destiny
the razors edge from our final breath
then comes death
Everyone I see has a heart disease
and I know the remedy
but I should not impose
my views on those
that don't ask me what I think
Chorus:
So let's talk about the weather
and last night's game
We shouldn't mention things that matter
cuz that causes shame
We wouldn't want to hurt their feelings if they don't want to change
so let's talk about the weather
cuz it looks like rain
Verse 2:
We love our enemy and our neighbors
by endorsing their behaviors
who are we to say
they can't act that way
we don't know what they've been through
Let them teach our boys to be ladies
and our girls to hate their babies
but that's just politics
which we can never fix
so let's look the other way
And talk about the weather . . .
Bridge:
But it'll be ok
just have faith

First off, thanks Katie for sharing your tips and experience with everyone. My second baby is currently 10 weeks and I just wanted to put my own experience on here. I watched this video before she was born, and felt hopeful for sleep to be better this time around. (My first experience was awful and I had really bad PPD) I followed as many of the tips here as I could. However, we do use a pacifier, and my baby can barely stay awake for an hour and a half at bedtime, much less 3 hours haha. And I have a very difficult time putting baby down drowsy but not asleep and having her fall asleep on her own. But I did do every 3-hour feedings since about a week old, tummy sleep, and also did awake time after nursing instead of nursing to sleep as often as I could. I really wasn't sure if it would work but I figured it was for sure worth a shot! In the earlier weeks, we were getting 4-hour stretches at the beginning of the night, and I was hopeful for that to get longer. Unfortunately, we hit weeks 8 and 9 and it seemed like baby's sleep was getting worse instead of better. I was hitting a wall due to sleep deprivation and started experiencing some really troubling PPD symptoms. Out of desperation, I started on an antidepressant and I bought Taking Cara Babies' Newborn sleep package. We also moved our baby into her own room so that her movements and grunting wouldn't continue waking me, and because our room is much brighter than hers. That was 4 days ago. Using the methods from Taking Cara Babies I have successfully put my baby down awake to fall asleep twice in the past 4 days, but all the other times it hasn't worked. (Meaning; she cried and didn't fall asleep. Which gets stressful, especially when I'm emotionally fragile, and afraid that if I don't master this I'll never sleep again😅) In just 2 days I went from 3 feedings at night to only 2 (3 and 5/6 AM instead of 11/12, 3, and 5/6) which is encouraging. The strategy from TCB is basically try to hold baby off as long as possible so they get used to feeding less at night. Even though I'm not nursing till 2:30 or 3, my baby is waking up 4 times before then (usually starting at 12ish) and then going back to sleep when I give her the pacifier. Because I am somehow who does really really poorly with lack of sleep (hello PPD lol) I do plan to do formal "cry-it-out" type sleep training at 4 months if we hit the sleep regression or sleep is still not going well. I hate the crying as much as any other sane mama, but I know that it will be so much better for everyone when it's done. Anyway... this may not be the place to share all of this but I wanted to openly put my experience out there in case it helps any other mamas who may be struggling OR just want to hear from others' experiences.

My babies had oral ties which complicated my efforts. We have 5. The youngest is 7 mmonths and has both a lip and tongue tie. After her diagnosis I realized that 2 of our older girls had them as well. We're now doing exercises to help and considering a revision so that she can get as much milk as is available. Getting these diagnosed is crucial to implement sleep training effectively. No full tummy - no long stretches of sleep. She now breastfeeds and bottlefeeds the breastmilk she can't draw out herself. It has helped a ton and now I'll be implementing your strategies as she's very used to waking during the night. Even though she now eats some solids. 😂 Thanks Katie. ❤
