    Why do Spanish verbs that end in *AR* now end with “o” instead of the grammatically correct past participle? I noticed this in Reggaton, Merengue, Bachata songs like Karol G’s CAIRO, for example “Alejao = alejado”; enamorao = enamorado, dejao = dejado; ganao = ganado, pasao = pasado etc. Can you explain it to me if this only happens in verbs with AR or all types of verbs?

    • @TeacherCatalina
      @TeacherCatalina Před 7 dny

      Thank you so much for your insightful question! I'm so glad you noticed this interesting linguistic phenomenon in reggaeton, merengue, and bachata music. By the way, I love all of those genres. You're absolutely right to point out that the correct past participle for -AR verbs ends in "-ado." For example, "alejado," "enamorado," "dejado," etc. However, in certain musical genres like reggaeton, artists often use a shortened form ending in "-ao" for stylistic and rhythmic reasons. It is also used as everyday speech in some ares of Spanish Speaking countries. This is NOT limited to -AR verbs. You can find it with other verb types as well. For instance: -ER verbs: comido (comío), bebido (bebío) -IR verbs: vivido (vivío), salido (salío) Why do artists do this? Rhythm and Flow: The shortened "-ao" ending fits the rhythmic patterns of these genres more easily, making the lyrics flow smoothly and enhancing the overall musicality. Regional Dialects: In some regions, particularly in the Caribbean, this shortened form is a common feature of everyday speech. Artists often incorporate these regional variations into their music to connect with their audience on a deeper level. Artistic Expression: Using the "-ao" ending can be seen as a form of artistic expression, adding a unique flavor and cultural identity to the music. Is it grammatically correct? Technically, no. The standard and grammatically correct forms are those ending in "-ado," "-ido," etc. However, language is constantly evolving, and these variations are a testament to its dynamic nature. Should I use it? In formal settings like school, work, or official documents, it's always best to stick to the standard forms. However, in casual conversations or when enjoying music, these variations are perfectly acceptable and can even be a fun way to connect with the culture behind the music. I hope this explanation is helpful! Remember, language is a beautiful and complex tapestry, and exploring its variations is a fascinating journey. Un abrazo, Catalina

    Teacher Catalina, in lesson 2 we used mal (bad) but in lesson 24 we used (bad) as malo, malos and mala malas. Why has the word changed?

    • @TeacherCatalina
      @TeacherCatalina Před 7 dny

      That's a fantastic question! You're showing great attention to detail. The reason you see both "mal" and "malo/a/os/as" is because they are different parts of speech that have similar but distinct meanings and uses. Mal (adverb): This word describes how something is done. It translates to "badly" or "poorly" in English. For example: "Él canta mal" (He sings badly). "Ella nada mal" (She swims poorly). Malo/a/os/as (adjective): This word describes the quality or character of something or someone. It translates to "bad" in English. Note that it changes to match the gender and number of the noun it describes: "Un libro malo" (A bad book). "Unas malas noticias" (Bad news). Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm always here to help you on your Spanish learning journey! ¡Hasta luego!
