If you want a solid backing for this crisis, I highly recommend “Recipe for Disaster: The Formula That Killed Wall Street”. I’m not a math probability quiz, but this article explained things clearly and was a very good read. It’s on the Wired website. Reading this really gave me a couple of Oh Shit moments. And it totally explains the background Margin Call didn’t have the time to address.

Ross Perot had some major rules at EDS in the ‘80s: no buckles on shoes; no sideburns; no office affairs; and never telling your co-workers what you’re making. They’d fire you immediately for the last one, and everyone knew it. The joke circulating at the home office was one guy telling his buddy “I had a nightmare last night, I dreamed I was in bed with Mrs. Perot - and I told her how much I was making.

An excellent movie, IMO. But I believe you are making an error in your gentle criticism - I don't believe that the heads of risk and sales were "introducing themselves to each other", they were being introduced to the wider group which includes a "junior analyst" who likely knows little of the hierarchy. The head of sales later says to the head of risk "I warning you about..." when the head of trading momentarily steps out of the room. Clearly they have know each other prior to this meeting. A great movie, and a good review. Thank you.

One of the best movies about that financial crisis, together with the Big Short. The script and the cast are amazing. It show how powerful a theatre play can be. In that regard, it reminded me 12 Angry Men.

Some say this about Lehman Bros handling of the 2007-2008 credit debacle, but it's really about Goldman. There's aspects of Lehman's part in it, but this is mostly Goldman. I used to be a commodity broker and floor manager for a division of Goldman at the WTC and during the credit debacle, I was a derivatives risk manager and compliance officer for one of the largest Trust companies in the world. I was an Eric Dale in my firm. Guys like us were the canaries in the coal mine at our firms for anyone who would listen. Street intelligence revealed that Goldman had been preparing for weeks ahead. Some would argue years. Most knew that Goldman had the fastest trading systems, but most did not understand the relevance of SLK purchase several years before. SLK had developed, owned and operated the world's most sophisticated clearing system. Goldman kept track of everyone they dumped MBS derivatives on, shorted the counterparty's stock ,bought their puts, etc., prior to providing accurate market valuations and spreading tales of fools buying junk. Many have forgotten that along with Moody's and S&P, that Goldman was also a ratings agency. Additionally, many also probably forgot the Nobel prize winning Black Scholes risk modeling that made all of this hokey trader friendly risk management possible. Guys like myself would get laughed out of meetings when we'd present catastrophic risk models. There wasn't much laughing when Lehman and Bear crashed.

“Banking is a regulated industry” lady you are full of crap. Banking is about as regulated as the international shipping industry. There is a veneer of regulation, but the underlying truth is that it is the Wild West. Quite apart from that, it sounds like you are blaming borrowers for not paying mortgages that led to the collapse. That’s victim blaming at worst, gaslighting at best. Simple fact, they should never of been lent the money in the first place. If the banks had done their due diligence and had proper credit checks and background checks on people they were lending money to. Or others lending money to on their behalf (and they were paying to lend money on their behalf!) most people would’ve failed those checks. Blaming the borrowers is like blaming the hungry person for eating a piece of bread they found. They’re starving, they are going to eat the bread. If your desperate for a house, you’re going to take the loan. Particularly if it’s offered to them under dishonest circumstances.

I believe the most underrated nuisance from finance is that it diverts scientists from scientific progress. And it can do that because of debt-currency that can be artificially inflated thus creating a too strong temptation in a materialistic godless society. So it was great that the movie includes this scene and it is sad to learn that you Miss Taylor followed the same path.

The movie, "The Big Short" from the famous book of the same title explains this even more in depth and in many other examples. I read the book and then watched the movie about 6 times to get everything clear. This lady knows her stuff as well. In the movie, Steve Carell is NOT the funny man we all know him as and takes manic depressiveness to a new level as his character. When the book, "The Big Short" came out, a documentary that encapsulated the "big bubble s" rise and then bursting is expertly displayed (Inside Job). IN this documentary, we see in a microcosm situation what was coming and how it began all within the tiny country of Iceland. To see the grass roots effect, see "99 Homes".

D.Taylor your forgetting to roll inside of the Risk Management portion what was going on inside the Big Short with the "gambling and lies from everyone including the Rating companies." Meaning if you have a fabricated product based on entirely on people whom took out those loans as Ninja Loans." If you think closely to these movies the Big Short was happening a few days ahead which was creating those bounces outside the Historic Lines. Like the breakdown especially the part apart being from different backgrounds

Eric Dale was going to take home the file before he gave it to Peter. That's company property. But the company didn't know it existed or what he was working on. But once they had the first management meeting, they knew the risk of what Eric Dale was going to do. During the parking lot scene, Jared and Will were arguing if Eric was going to do the right thing. I think that before Eric had handed over the file to Peter, Eric was probably keeping his options open.

When I was a licensed advisor with Fidelity Investments during the 1990s we ran into a similar fiasco with fund managers trading Derivatives and the SEC shut down Derivatives because so many investors were alarmed and shocked tht their low risk mutual fund was investing in ultra high risk securities. Fidelity's owner Ned Johnson and his daughter Abby came to our office for a pep talk and later a few Fidelity fund managers were fired.
