    Joel is absolutely correct about if you are starting this at over fifty yo. At first I was quite offended as a person on the downside of sixty but he was talking about farming as a business with a succession plan. I bought myself a retirement farm because I wanted to return to the lifestyle I grew up in and having a postage stamp urban garden just wasn't cutting it. But I struggle with coming up with a succession plan for what I am working on developing. If I dropped over dead tomorrow, my son's would sell the farm to the highest bidder, probably a developer who would bulldoze the property to turn into a subdivision. Then in turn they would spend that money on cruises (1 son goes on a minimum of 1 cruise per year and 1 year went on 4), vacations or other entertainment. Don't get me wrong, they work very hard, but they do so that they can play hard rather than to build anything of lasting value. Good men but what we value is very different. I would love to have someone to leave it to who would continue to build on but who is going to want to wait another 20-30 years before it is actually theirs?

      What weeds do you have growing in your yard or pasture? For example ... clover & dandelion are telling you that your high in calcium. Dandelions have a deep taproot, so they can pull those minerals up. So does mullein, comfrey & burdock (< I wouldn't let that grow, it produces sticker seed head's & it's a pain to get rid of), but they're all medicinal & most livestock will eat it (all).

    Finding boxes of produce in the car in the morning. "Garden fairy has been here" 😂 When I was a kid we would run obstacle races that included running across top of the big round haybailes. Most fun was when there was a short gap between them that had to be jumped over. Only lasted till adults found out about it and freaked because uncle once broke his collar bone jumping off one playing Dukes of Hazard....But boy that was fun! 😂 It would be cool if could figure a way of including that in the cross-gym idea. Somehow lessen the distance or impact of falling off? Offer cheap jacket for sliding off the hay? (Not that it mattered to us kids any. 🙃)

    My grandfather, father, and uncle followed the advisors and got bigger. Grandfather died in 75, uncle got out in the late 80's, dad retired 18 months ago. Brothers sold CAFO dairy herd and youngstock, about 1500 head and bought about 250 beefers. They still do crops and feed the cattle under roof with all the expensive inputs.

    Greg Judy........keep in mind. What you see is not what you always get ! I call Greg " Glyphosate " Greg. Its his favorite word ! Greg often side tracks people into thinking what he feels you should be doing. Greg wont allow anyone to talk ill about him or his operation......or your blocked ! His mind is closed to reality. Greg calls ordinary farm land " dead soils " When those soils produce 250 bu. per acer corn........ and 80 bu. soybeans ? These are dead soils ? As a farmer....I rotationally grazed dairy cattle for more then 40 years. I know the realities of farming and grazing. Ask yourself...why arent there more dairy farmer rotationally grazing ? Then relate it to Greg. He came from Minn. dairy country. Greg says he focuses on the positives. Fact is........ before you can move forward..........you must be able to understand the negatives and relate......solve problems. Until then....you go no where ! An example..... Gregs latest video czcams.com/video/kIZytXYVFM0/video.html Time 1:51 to 3:52 . Greg stated earlier he bush hogs / clips his pastures to control brush. Before he blocked me....... I suggested he kill the brush instead of brush hog it......if he didnt..... the brush would over take his pastures. Finally Greg figured it out !!!! Congratulations Greg !

    • @markpiersall9815
      @markpiersall9815 Před rokem

      Soil is lost to erosion at the rate of one inch every 13 to 65 years depending upon conditions and farming practices used. However it takes hundreds of years, 500 to 1000 to make an inch of soil. Silvopasture has advantages to growing row crops to feed livestock. Greg Judy sometimes brush hogs a field after the livestock have passed to suppress a few plants both Cattle and Sheep bypass due to it not being palatable.
