I always have a problem with French knots. There's always a little piece of thread that just shows up on the front side and can't be pulled or anything. Finally, sometimes I have to pull the knot at the start of the thread to the backside.

What do you paint your pieces with?

One of my biggest hang ups is not wanting to waste materials but the only way to make progress is to use your stash. This is why I’m always so excited when I find bags of embroidery floss at thrift stores, I’m much more compelled to practice and make mistakes when I didn’t blow a bunch of money on supplies.
