Stefan Sobell - A Luthier's Workshop
This is a short excerpt from an excellent DVD from Sound Techniques Ltd called Guitar Maestros Series 1 - Martin Simpson. In this video Martin Simpson play some excellent guitar pieces and talks about his playing with Trevor Dann. It provides excellent insight into Martin's skills and is well worth the cover prices as entertainment and as tuition. There is also a short section on Stefan Sobell, a world famous luthier, who makes the Martin Simpson Signature model acoustic guitar. Try the DVD - it's excellent value.

Sadly Martin seems to have moved on from his Sobells, last time I saw him he only used PRS. never forget the first time I saw him in Oxford music rooms,, about 25 years ago one Sobell and I think one or two mikes, dead simple...dead gorgeous.

Unfortunately, being a craftsman who use magnifiers often, ruin your vision. He's not very farsighted .

Mr Sobell has certainly changed a bit since I last saw him, when he was running the folk club at the Barley Mow pub just off Newcastle Quayside. Happy days!

OMG! Stefan Sobell! I bought a 5 course cittern from him in the early 80's and it was stupendous!!! Amazingingly easy to play and wonderful sound!! What's even more amazing was it only cost under $1,000 (it even included a hard she'll case)!!! I could not afford what they go for now!! Sadly, I sold it about 8 years later as I fell in love with the hurdy hurdy and the cittern languished unplayed in it's case and I thought such a wonderful instrument needed to be played so it passed on to a very good player. Even so, I wish I'd hung on to it... Mr. Sobell, thank you so very much (I still have the bill of sale with your handwritten note!)...

Interesting - but, (once again ...) why not PLAY the guitar? To only talk about it is sooo frustrating.

Very nice video! Mr. Sobell seems like a very nice person. I hope I have the opportunity to visit "The Old School" one day! A more brilliant luthier I have not seen!
