Cant find a Dell PowerEdge T430 under 500 Euro. So i dont know how you got one for 40? TrueNAS is not recommended to run in a VM it should be run in a bare bone. As standalone.
The T420 was $40, I made a separate video about my budget T420 build. My T430 was $600 before I started upgrades. Why don’t you think TrueNas should run as a vm?
I wouldn't us the mx SSD drives as they don't trim correctly in prixmox as well as true as

your audio and video is out of sync. fyi and the cpu's your talking about are called Xeon's not Xenon's.

There look to be extra sata ports available. Why not use one of them for boot SSD and mount it under the optical drive? This way you'd have the 4 bay HDD cage available for entirely for storage.

S.A.S. Drives do not work with S.A.T.A. backplanes but S.A.T.A. will work with SAS Backplanes.

Those look like Xeon processors, not Xenon, unless they started filling them with a gas that I wasn't aware of.

Congratulations for your awesome setup. that server could be fine for IA SERVER, (theo one left to go). you need middle to high gamma power computing to run it but looks like the budget isnt´t a trouble for you
13:45 This is the reason I don't use static straps and train new techs to condition themselves to touch the metal of the server case or any other metal outside the case, i.e., table, rack, workbench, etc., before sticking their grubby paws into a PC or server.

But how do you manage the noise? And on the T430,T420 I hope that you removed the cooling shroud only for the video because it is really important for the cooling.
I don’t mind the server humming! I take naps in my chair next to the servers all the time lol. And yes the shroud was put back on 😅

23:03 Do check the power consumption on idle. If its above 150W idle, probably not a good idea to run it at home.
150 watts at idle means its got big problems, those things idle at 75 to 90 watts, i got about 20 of em lol

If all you can more or less afford is $40 for a server. Especially an older server. You will be unable to afford the electricity to run it. Even the lower prices in the US compared to Europe. The cost will spiral quickly.
That is a great point. Operational costs are easy to forget about until the power bill arrives
@@dleer_defi I had a dual CPU HP sever of the same generation as the T420. Even with the L (low power) series of CPUs and 64BG of RAM. Its still idled at 127 watts. Which is a lot when its doing nothing. If you poke around. You will find a lot of servers of that generation, dont have many C states for the CPU. So the CPUs dont go into a low power state very often.

You are blessed to have such powerful hardware where an Alienware or i5-8500 gets to run Pi-Hole. All that power isn't necessary. I hope you get free electricity.

Would have been a lot easier to get to the ram if you removed the fan tray Using a ground strap to a case that doesn't have a power cable connected to ground doesn't ground you

what are you doing with all that RAM on the server?
The ram will support 8 vms along with my NAS.
@dleer_defi it sounds like you have way more RAM than you will need, but go big or go home I guess.

@@dleer_defi I have a Dell r710 running happily with proxmox installed and about 10 vm and 15 containers, yes it's old but it works. The only issue is the power consumption and electricity costs in the UK..

Been rebuilding my homelab, almost done rebuilding the proxmox server then on to the NAS. Always fun to watch other people's journey homleabbing, it can be frustrating now and again but there's always more to do and learn.

@@dleer_defi My setup is pretty simple, opnsense router, truenas server for storage and proxmox for VM's plus some client machines. Adding a separate pihole machine and rebuilding the proxmox server from an older xeon machine to an epyc 7302. Then I'll probably rebuild the NAS but that's in the future.

I hope you are setting the raid controller to pass through mode and then use zfs with proxmox or unraid
I have a lot to learn about my RAID controller(s) and optimal configs. Luckily I have a few big storage upgrades in the works so now is a great time to build my knowledge base.
You should really consider a server room and rack-based kit.
ZFS is fine, but for Unraid, you don’t want RAID. Why do you think it’s called Unraid?
Yes, for TrueNAS this RAID controleris not a good choice. Any RAID controler with a battery is not a good choice if you want to use it with TrueNAS because the RAID controler is doing the RAID work, not TrueNAS... That's not a bad one, just not good for any NAS with software RAID.
@@frederichardy8844 I have the same controller, but I haven’t turned on RAID and just pass it through to TN and it managed the zRAID fine.
I have been resisting the urge to do this. So, glad to watch someone else's journey.

Nice haul, welcome to LAB LYFE! .. I kinda like Jellyfin more than plex.. give it a shot, I/share-ees find the interface much nicer
Thank you for the warm welcome! I had to do a lot of troubleshooting with my modem / ISP to get Plex to work remotely. Now the only issue is that Plex incorrectly labels a few TV show series as movies. Beyond that Plex has been great for my family and I. That being said I am definitely interested in Jellyfin and will start doing some testing on my end. Why do you prefer it?
@@dleer_defi just looks nicer.. ma girl loves the phone app.. and works gr8 on my LG TV app... and.. well that very problem with TV shows & Movies can be sorted by having two different directories at the top (or selecting each series as a "SHOWS folder").. the IDENTIFY in Jelly on each "title" is gr8 if anything isn't auto detected. only thing I don't like is not being able to play m2ts folders or VOB folders, has a nice set of plugins.. I'd suggest "jellyscrub" and "merge versions" as being a must, have a play with it for sure!
FYI, SATA Drives can work on a SAS backplane, but SAS cannot work on SATA.
