This makes me realize how the Blind Banker episode made sure to prove Sherlock that he can count on John. Though John may not have the deduction and brain function of Sherlock's levels, he IS good! The moment with Van-Coon's diary, the moment with the picture of the wall by the train trails. It's a good way to show John was not just a doctor and a tag-along but a good help!

Sherlock wasn't correcting the condemned man just because he was butchering the English language. It was to test his patience and see if he couldn't get a rise out of him. The man's story was about killing his wife after she "provoked" him for saying he wasn't a real man. He later tells John that it wasn't worth his time. Why? Because he'd already confirmed that the man had no self control and would have likely killed Sherlock if he'd had another knife in his hands. Plus, if you remember from A Study In Pink, he told John that he helped Mrs Hudson with ensuring her husband's execution after a similar situation.
