GARDEN TOUR - groundhogs are eating EVERYTHING 😅
We had a late start with planting our garden this year with our wedding being in May. I wasn't even sure if I'd have a garden to give a tour of this year! The June summer heat has been intense but thankfully with some shade cloth and regular watering, the garden still continues to grow 🙏🏻 Groundhogs have been a challenge and we're hoping we solved that issue for the time being - we need to do some building repairs to prevent it from happening in the future.
The garden continues to be a place of peace, joy, and learning.. can't wait to see what the rest of the season holds.
Thanks for joining me ❤️

    Hi. Congratulation ! It's still a nice garden even though you had less time to take care of the plants. In terms of irrigation, I would suggest drip irrigation rather than sprinkling. It saves a lot of water, not only because it uses less water, but also because the water evaporates less so it really beneficits the plants. I've also been looking into oyas, but haven't tried it. Good luck.

    Great video. Love seeing how others do their early planting. I have yet to start, but it is a bit early in Nova Scotia. I am more focused on the new chciks and another batch of fertilized eggs coming in. I am not what we will grow this year for sure, but have planned on tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkin, and zucchini. Looking forward to the next video. PeterInHalifax

      I agree! I love seeing how everyone raises their seedlings. Its slightly different for everyone and it's fun to try different techniques. You have your hands full with the new chicks and fertilized eggs. Ours are hatching today! I could sit there and watch them the entire day, it's so interesting! Do you start your cucumbers and squash inside? We usually direct sow those!

    When I was young in the 1950s, homesteading was a term reserved for the program available in the 1800s for getting free land. We were poor and lived in a small Texas town and the driving force in our lives was hunger. Thus, at 10 years old, I became a gardener and chicken raiser. Our soil was a hard clay/chalice, so I had to improve the soil cheaply before planting. I got free cottonseed hulls from a local cotton gin that I carried home in burlap bags. A neighbor had a chicken coop that had not been used in five years; the coop had a foot of old, composted manure under the roost. I spread this all over the cottonseed hulls and then turned it all into the soil. I planted my garden from seeds given to me my my grandmother. That year we ate fresh vegetables and fried chicken raised with my first setting hen also gotten from my grandmother.

    • @HomesteadDreamers
      @HomesteadDreamers Před 5 měsíci

      I love that you were resourceful and found a variety of sources to help amend your beds. The idea of using cottonseed hulls is a great idea. I'll have to do some brainstorming to think about where we might be able to get more raw, bulk fillers for garden beds or to add to our compost. We have super clay soil that is full of rocks at the new place. We will need to amend the soil or garden in raised beds!

    When I was ten in a small Texas town, I raised my first chicks. We were poor and could buy nothing so I built my nest box, coop and pen from material I scrounged from abandoned houses. My grandmother gave me a setting Banham hen and ten eggs. Just before hatching, i found soda bottles and got enough money to buy 12 additional chicks from the feed store. During the night I placed the chicks under the Banham mom and she raised 22 chicks, some of them much larger than she was. She spent every day protecting them and the most important lesson that I learned was the love a mom had for her children.

    I had a Rooster just like yours, and he became very mean to all the hens. I had 37 hens and one boy, he was just evil and very jealous of me. When I would come out with them the girls would leave him and come to me to hang out. Well! he did not like that one bit. He would get so mad at the girls like a pimp would. He almost took my eye out, he damaged it badly. I have to wear glasses now just to see straight. I had him until he naturally died this winter when it got down to 9 degrees. Everyone kept asking me , "Do I still have that Rooster?" Well, I would say "Yes." Here is why, When he attacked me, while doing a CT scan in the ER they discovered I had a very large tumor the size of a grapefruit. So I made the statement he was my divine intervention, when anyone asked. He just died this year 2024. I am glad because I am no longer afraid to go out with the girls. I would like to say I would save the Rooster but I really can't say what I would do, because They are mean. at least the one I had was very mean.

      So glad to have you following on both channels! Love to hear about another fellow homesteader starting their journey from the beginning. Definitely look into hiring a forestry consultant to see if you can get some money for the timber! We have a video on that on Mason Dixon Acres. The self-build definitely takes a long time but it's been totally worth it. We have learned so many valuable skills from the process. Ours took a bit longer since we have been filming everything but I still think self-builds typically take quite a bit longer than if you were hiring a builder. Best of luck to you both! Would love to hear updates as you get further along in the project 🙂

    Living off grid for over 11 years now I can tell you that unwanted critters in your garden can be a challenge. Honestly deer were the easiest to keep out. The WORST are rabbits!! They will chew the base of your fruit trees. So do something to protect the base you'll be glad you did. Attracting critters with the compost pile might cause you trouble down the road. They could getbinto your gardens or attack your poultry. A small tumbler composter to put your food scraps in would be a good idea or feed it to poultry. We are self building also Many challenges strong desire and will required. Living a more self reliant life requires you to be an active participant so always something to do. We are in Tennessee and enjoy a long growing season which I'm so grateful for! Look forward to watching you grow
